Your passing is improving - Duke offer is nice as well.

You going to follow through on writing him as a two-sporter? Could be cool

247Sports Football Recruiting Podcast: October 22nd, 2019
TAGS - 247SPORTS, RECRUITING, STORM MCWILLIAMS JR, AUBURN, BO NIX, +2 MORE
October 22nd, 2019

TRANSCRIPT (12:48 - 18:30)

Greg Biggins: You know we love ourselves some quarterback talk.

Blair Angulo: They do, too. Who doesn't?

GB: A name that a lot of folks are going to be hearing about more and more as we get closer to that early signing period is a guy that some of our baseball listeners are probably familiar with and that's Storm McWilliams, the quarterback out of Grayson, Georgia that is just shooting up a lot of school's target list.

BA: You know, the quarterback recruitment process has been extended so much now that most of the top guys know where they're going as high school sophomores and junior.

GB: In the eight grade for some.

BA: Yeah and with the early signing period, I think we're starting to see teams that don't have one locked up get a bit more aggressive and try to find those hidden gems and many think that McWilliams can be that guy.

GB: He's not a Top 247 kid but he could be one soon.

BA: You're a big fan, you're really trying to get this bandwagon on the road.

GB: I'll admit it, I am. I went to see Marietta play Grayson, two top programs in the state of Georgia and they have probably the highest ranked tight end in a while.

BA: Since recruiting rankings were invented.

GB: Marietta's been struggling this season, ton of talent but they're playing Grayson, another powerhouse but they have this new quarterback, this baseball kid. I'm not going to call him Patrick Mahomes or anything.

BA: Here we go, y'all.

GB: No, listen. I didn't really get the hype at all, his numbers are good and his HUDL film is good, it's definitely college caliber, maybe Group of 5 or lower tier Power 5 but when I was hearing from some of the guys that cover SEC teams that, you know, they were sniffing around on him, I didn't get it. I saw him warm up, saw some of the throws he made in the game, off platform, backfoot, on the run and I get it now. He's got a cannon.

BA: 94 on the laser.

GB: Yeah, he's a big time prospect in baseball, might end up getting drafted next spring. He's not your Russell Wilson or Kyler Murray type where he's this great athlete but he's six-foot-four, six-five, about 190 pounds and he's got one of the livest arms I've seen in person. The high school game is so full of this quick slants and RPOs and some of the quicker stuff that you don't really get to see his arm on his film and during the games but when you see him warm up or take a few deep shots a game, you start to wonder with more experience and a few years in a college strength and conditioning program, he has the tools to be a legitimate quarterback. We've heard Auburn, we've heard Texas A&M but they have Haynes King, a top 140 player so I think it's more just kicking the tires for A&M. Tennessee, South Carolina, I think they're all interested but are they interested enough for him to be a take, that's the question.

BA: The talent is obvious, even as a skeptic, I see it but is he an actual take in the SEC when for some of these guys, the numbers are tight.

GB: I think he ends up being a take. Look, if you're Auburn and you signed Bo Nix last cycle and he's starting as a true freshman, what top quarterback prospect is going to sign up for that? You can also sign McWilliams and not worry about him running off some QB prospect in the 2021 cycle because I think the perception is that he is a baseball prospect first, football second.

BA: Is he worth the risk then? Forget the talent evaluation. How comfortable are you using one of your counters on a kid that might never play a down and goes plays baseball.

GB: I think it's a plus

BA: Really?

GB: Yeah, just have the baseball team pick up his scholarship and deal with that risk. If I'm a football coach, I'm walking across the athletics facility and into the baseball coach's office and asking for this favor. I think the football thing is real with this kid, he left one of the top baseball schools in the country to come start at quarterback.

BA: You've got a point there. We'll see, he's certainly one of many rising quarterbacks that just a few months ago, we weren't talking about.

GB: Quarterbacks are a premium, my man.
