Racing Louisville Faces Defining Moment in Filipa Patão Era as Playoffs Begin.
Three years ago, Racing Louisville FC made a bold decision in hiring Filipa Patão, a rising Portuguese tactician with a reputation for tactical sharpness and high standards. In 2026, with their third straight playoff berth locked in and a third-place finish in the NWSL table (16-4-6), Patão’s vision is no longer potential—it’s pressure.
Louisville isn't just a good team anymore. They're expected to win.
That expectation weighs even heavier with club captain Kosovare Asllani signaling that this will be her final professional season. The 37-year-old Swedish maestro arrived alongside Patão in 2024, and since then, she has transformed the culture of the locker room. Veteran leadership, accountability, and elegance on the ball—Asllani brought it all. And now, the team that’s been built around her wants one thing: to send her out a champion.
“Everything we’ve done the past three years was to get to this point,” Patão told reporters this week. “But we’re not satisfied with just being in the playoffs. This group wants legacy.”
That legacy starts with Ella Palis, who matched her previous season as one of the most complete attacking forces in the league. The French international led the NWSL in goals with 20 and added 9 assists—tied for second-best—sharing that mark with Asllani and Washington’s Ouleymata Sarr. Palis’ ability to drive the attack while creating space for others has been the key to Racing’s balanced approach.
“She’s unstoppable,” Asllani said of Palis. “If we go all the way, it’ll be because Ella took us there. She is the best player in the NWSL.”
Racing’s playoff campaign begins against the Seattle Reign, who enter as the No. 6 seed following a 10-8-8 season. It’s a dangerous matchup. Seattle’s midfield trio can slow the tempo and frustrate opponents, and their postseason experience runs deep. But Patão has built her side on control and ruthlessness in transition—something the Reign have struggled to defend all year.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. Louisville has reached the semifinals in three straight seasons but have always fallen short of the championship. This year, there are no moral victories. For a team with a championship core, a superstar in peak form, and a legend seeking her last dance, only one ending will be satisfying.
Can Patão deliver the title she was hired to chase?
We’re about to find out.
