Southampton Round Up - December 2022
Rob Stock -- Southern Daily Echo
Southampton Football Club has had a rough December, with a record of 1 win, 1 draw, and 5 losses in all competitions. This recent dip in form has been attributed, in part, to a string of injuries affecting key players. Currently, Adam Armstrong, Stuart Armstrong, James Ward-Prowse, Moussa Djenepo, Kyle Walker-Peters, and Mohammed Salisu are all sidelined with various injuries, including broken toes and dislocated shoulders. Che Adams has also missed game time due to injury.
These absences have resulted in players like Theo Walcott receiving extended playing time, despite being primarily a substitute. The Saints will need to strengthen their squad in the upcoming transfer window as they are currently engaged in a relegation battle, sitting just one point above the drop zone. The injured players will require several weeks to several months to fully recover, making it imperative for the club to bring in fresh talent.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles Heads Back to Arsenal
Arsenal has recalled Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who was on loan at Southampton, due to a perceived lack of playing time. Maitland-Niles was primarily used as a backup midfielder and was called upon when the squad needed rotation due to fatigue or injury. In his 15 appearances in the Premier League, he kept one clean sheet but failed to register any goals or assists. Despite his lack of production, Maitland-Niles played an important role in rotation for the Saints and the club will need to find a suitable replacement to fill the void.
Southampton Needs Depth During Transfer Window
With the transfer window now open, Southampton is focusing on addressing its needs to avoid relegation. The club is primarily looking to bolster its midfield, starting with the addition of an attacking midfielder. With Joe Aribo primarily serving as a central midfielder and slated to be James Ward-Prowse's backup, the Saints are in need of a more attacking-minded player in that position. Additionally, the club is also seeking a backup for Ibrahima Diallo at defensive midfield. Lastly, with a number of recent injuries, Southampton is also on the hunt for a right midfielder, either to start or provide backup to Theo Walcott.
