Manchester United Begin Major Clearout with Release of 7 Youngsters

Image
The controversial Mason Greenwood exits the club

INEOS Group have started a major clearout at Manchester United, with the goal of creating a squad built in the manager, Erik ten Hag's, image for the foreseeable future. United have a history of hanging onto young players past their sell-by date, and today they have massively corrected for that. Several academy graduates who have not nailed down spots in the first team have had their contracts terminated and will be leaving the club. This includes the following: Tyler Fredricson, Shola Shoretire, Conor McNeill, Omari Forson, Toby Collyer and Habeeb Ogunneye. United want to have a much tighter, stricter first-team path going forwards. Either you're good enough to get in, or you will be moved on to a new club to develop your career elsewhere.

The real headline though was the release of Mason Greenwood. Greenwood was accused of domestic abuse after pictures and audio tape leaked of his girlfriend, who had been visibly beaten. Despite charges being dropped, INEOS and ten Hag have determined that they do not want to be associated with the player or deal with the outrage from fans, the women's team and others by keeping him at the club. His contract has also been terminated and he will be free to join any club in Europe or elsewhere.

These releases just mark the start of the sweeping changes expected this season. All signs point towards United trying to trim the squad down to a more manageable 25, and possible departure of players who were integral to the team last season or have been over the past few years to try to build a team that more accurately reflects what ten Hag wants to see on the pitch.

Sancho, Casemiro Leave Manchester United in First Summer Transfers

Image
Jadon Sancho was much maligned at United and will get a new start at Chelsea

In a strategic move, Manchester United has offloaded winger Jadon Sancho to Premier League rivals Chelsea for a reported fee of £38.2 million. Despite his initial promise, Sancho found himself on the fringes of the squad in recent times, with the manager's preference leaning elsewhere. With this transfer, United signal a shift in their tactical approach while Chelsea secures a potential game-changer for their squad.

In a separate, headline-grabbing transaction, Manchester United has bid farewell to another key player, Casemiro, who has made his way to Newcastle United in a deal worth a substantial £57.3 million. Known for his commanding presence in midfield, the departure of the Brazilian powerhouse leaves a notable void in United's lineup. The decision to part ways with Casemiro reflects the manager's strategic vision and the club's ongoing restructuring efforts. As Sancho and Casemiro depart Old Trafford, the focus now turns to United's next steps in reshaping their lineup and pursuing their ambitions in the season ahead.

Frenchmen Varane and Martial Join Fulham, Spurs for combined £36.2M fee

Image
Two French talents, Antony Martial and Raphael Varane, exit the club

In a series of notable departures, Manchester United has bid farewell to two French talents, marking the end of their respective chapters at Old Trafford. First, Anthony Martial, once hailed as a rising star, has been sold to Fulham for a modest £10.5 million. Despite arriving with immense potential at the tender age of 19, Martial struggled to consistently deliver the performances expected of him in the red jersey, prompting his move to Craven Cottage.

In a separate transfer, United has also parted ways with center-back Raphael Varane, who joins Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £25.7 million. Varane's time at United was marred by recurring injury setbacks, limiting his impact on the pitch. Despite flashes of brilliance, his tenure was marked by frustration for both player and club. As Varane embarks on a new journey with Spurs, United faces the task of filling the void left by these departures and reshaping their squad for the challenges ahead.

Man United Unload Pair of English Defenders for £40.4M

Image
Wan-Bissaka and Maguire were good servants who weren't quite at the level required for United

As part of the significant overhaul under the new managerial regime, Manchester United has bid farewell to two stalwarts of the Solskjaer era whose playing styles no longer align with the club's evolving tactics. First, Harry Maguire, the defensive linchpin, has been sold to Tottenham Hotspur for a modest fee of £15.5 million. Known for his robust defending and leadership qualities, Maguire's departure signifies a strategic shift away from counter-attacking football towards a possession-oriented approach favored by the new manager, ten Hag.

Similarly, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, renowned for his defensive prowess, finds himself on the move to West Ham United for a fee of £25.9 million. Despite being a mainstay in the United defense, Wan-Bissaka's skill set is better suited to a defensive-minded system rather than the high line and possession-oriented style advocated by ten Hag. As United restructures its squad to adapt to the manager's vision, the departures of Maguire and Wan-Bissaka mark the beginning of a new era at Old Trafford, with the club poised for a fresh direction under its new leadership.
