MLS Evolution the Birth of the Superleague

Image

In a groundbreaking move that promises to reshape the landscape of football in North America and beyond, Major League Soccer (MLS) has undergone a radical transformation, giving rise to a superleague comprising 29 elite teams. This seismic shift marks a turning point in the history of American soccer, as the MLS transcends its previous boundaries to create a league of unprecedented caliber and allure.

The newly formed superleague is divided into two conferences, each boasting a constellation of footballing giants from around the globe. In the Eastern Conference, powerhouses such as Ajax, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, AC Milan, Newcastle United, Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham Hotspur converge to create an electrifying lineup of talent and competition.

Meanwhile, the Western Conference showcases an equally formidable array of clubs, including Al Nassr, Atlético Madrid, Benfica, Boca Juniors, Celtic, Barcelona, Porto, Galatasaray, Juventus, Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), Real Madrid, River Plate, AS Roma, and Sporting Lisbon. With illustrious histories and fervent fan bases, these teams bring a global flavor to the heart of North American soccer.

Underpinning this bold initiative is a visionary franchise model that eschews traditional constraints, such as salary caps, enabling clubs to assemble star-studded squads and compete on an even footing with the world's elite. This departure from convention signals a paradigm shift in MLS governance, as the league embraces a more open and competitive ethos, akin to its European counterparts.

Central to the realization of this ambitious vision is the leadership of Florentino Pérez, the driving force behind the concept of a superleague that transcends continental boundaries. Drawing on his experience and influence within the footballing community, Pérez has spearheaded efforts to bring together an unprecedented coalition of clubs, united by their shared commitment to excellence and innovation.

Crucially, the financial underpinnings of the superleague have been fortified through a strategic partnership with JP Morgan Chase, ensuring the league's long-term viability and prosperity. This infusion of capital not only empowers clubs to invest in top-tier talent and infrastructure but also underpins initiatives aimed at enhancing the overall fan experience and global appeal of MLS.

As the inaugural season of the superleague unfolds, anticipation reaches fever pitch, with fans worldwide eagerly awaiting the spectacle of elite competition and unparalleled drama. From iconic rivalries to star-studded showdowns, each match promises to showcase the best of the beautiful game, as titans of world football collide on American soil.

In forging this new frontier of soccer excellence, the MLS reaffirms its status as a trailblazer in the global footballing landscape, challenging conventions and redefining what is possible in the pursuit of sporting greatness. With the birth of the superleague, a new era dawns for American soccer, one characterized by ambition, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Manchester United Offload Trio of Youngsters

Image
Amad Diallo, Hannibal Mejbri and Brandon Williams (not pictured) exit the club

Manchester United have started the process of trimming down their squad to comply with the 25-man squad rules in the new MLS Super League. The first step in doing so for United was to start moving out youngsters who have not demonstrated that they are up to the standards required to be a Manchester United first team player. United began by releasing several young talents who haven't broken through including the likes of Shola Shoretire, Dan Gore and Rhys Bennett, but followed that up with three sales to rival Superleague clubs. Amad Diallo, the Ivorian young winger is set for a $11.8M move to Olympique de Marseille. Hannibal Mejbri is headed to the French league in a $3.65M transfer to AC Ajaccio. Brandon Williams, the young English right back, remains in the Superleague but will join Ajax for a $5.3M fee.

Manchester United Continue to Trim Squad as Lindelof, Van de Beek Exit

Image
Lindelof and van de Beek never quite reached the heights expected of them at United

United continues their clearout with sales of Dutch central midfielder, Donny van de Beek to SL Benfica for $11.2M and Swedish center back, Victor Lindelöf to Tottenham Hotspur for $20.6M. The club has a bit of glut in the midfielders who do the same type of things so there is no place for van de Beek. United will be looking to rework its center back options as well with Varane and Lisandro Martinez likely to stay as the first-choice pairing with Maguire as backup to Varane, while a younger, left-footed center back will be brought in to spell the injury-prone Licha.

United Complete Rare Transfer with Rivals City

Image
A disgruntled Jadon Sancho, who has fallen out with Erik ten Hag, has returned to his roots at Man City

It's rare to see a transfer completed between the two Manchester sides, but we've seen it today. Jadon Sancho is set to leave Manchester United to rejoin his boyhood club, Manchester City in a $53M transfer deal. Sancho fell out with ten Hag last season and is not seen as part of his plans going forwards, so United were eager to recoup a big fee for the player. City look to add him to their deep reserve of attacking players. In addition to this deal, United also moved on from Christian Eriksen, sending him to Atletico Madrid for $21M, while also sending Martial who has been riddled with injuries for years, to Galatasaray for just $12M.

Casemiro joins Borussia Dortmund in $68.7M deal

Image
Casemiro had a great first season at United but is set to leave the club

In a bit of a surprising move, Casemiro has left Manchester United for almost the same fee he arrived at the club for in 2022. He heads to Borussia Dortmund for just under $70M wher ehe will wear the #7 shirt. United appear set to explore younger options in central midfield, with Bruno Fernandes expected to start as one of two midfielders in a new 4-4-2 system that ten Hag will try this season. Mount is expected to back up Fernandes, with Kobbie Mainoo currently being first choice as Bruno's partner as the more defensive of the two midfielders. It is likely though that United will purchase a more experienced player in their mid-20s to replace Casemiro and spell Mainoo in the position, however. In a smaller deal, United also sold young wingback, Alvaro Fernandez, to Trabzonspor of the Turkish league for $3.9M.

United Land Bayern Star, Davies, in $50M Transfer

Image
United had a chance to sign Davies when he was still in Vancouver several years ago.

United have made their first big splash of the summer, signing up Canadian left-back, Alphonso Davies for $50M from Bayern Munich. Davies has been adamant about wanting to play a more prominent attacking role, and United have apparently promised the player that he will play on the left flank and wear the #11 shirt in the new 4-4-4-2 system in a role reminiscent to that of United legend, Ryan Giggs. This is also an excellent deal for United from a branding perspective, getting one of the top stars to come out of North America as they are set to regularly play in front of American audiences.

United Land Guimarães on Deadline Day

Image
United not only raided Newcastle for Dan Ashworth, but have grabbed arguably their best player as well.

United continue to raid the Newcastle coffers after securing Dan Ashworth as Director of Football following INEOS' purchase of the club. On deadline day they have completed a $100M deal for the Brazilian midfielder, who slots in perfectly as a replacement for Casemiro in midfield. Bruno will wear the #6 and play alongside his namesake Bruno Fernandes in midfield. Prior to the end of the window, United also completed another smaller $3.5M deal for Fabio Chiarodia, an 18 year old left-footed center back from Atalanta, who projects to be a great backup for Lisandro Martinez.
