Manchester United Land Alessio Romagnoli for £49.1M Fee

Image
Manchester United have decided to look to Italy to plug their hole at world-class center-back, securing the signature of AC Milan's Alessio Romagnoli for £49,100,000. Romagnoli will earn £110K per week at United and wear the esteemed #5 shirt previously donned by the likes of Rio Ferdinand. At 24 years old, Romagnoli is already one of the best center-backs in world football, and should make a United defense that was already the strongest in the premier league this season, even stronger.

There are talks that Eric Bailly could be on the way out. His injury problems have been a concern for the club since his arrival, and with Romagnoli and Lindelof now ahead of him, he is unlikely to get regular first-team action. Jeremy Mathieu and Axel Tuanzebe, on the other hand, should be satisfied with backup roles for the time being.

So Premier League is the team's main league. Europa League is what? Champions league is a playoff of all the top teams in the country after the season?

Ok here are all the competitions:

Premier League: This is the top division of English football, all the big teams in England play here like Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton, etc

FA Cup: This is the major English domestic cup. Teams from all the English divisions (Premier league, EFL Championship, EFL League One, EFL league Two, etc) participate in a single elimination tournament here throughout the season (starting in December).

EFL Cup: This is basically the 2nd tier version of the FA Cup. Same teams, slightly different rules, not as prestigious. Also starts earlier than the FA Cup.

UEFA Champions League: Top competition in European football. The top teams from the different leagues in Europe get assigned to 8 groups of 4 where they play a round robin (play each other twice, home/away). Top 2 in each group advance to the knockout stage. This is considered the most prestigious trophy in club football. 3rd place teams in each group drop down to join the other teams in the Europa League, 4th place are out. Qualification to get into the Champions League is based on how you do in your league. For example the Premier League gets to send 4 teams, so the top 4 teams in the premier league qualify. You can also qualify for the CL by winning the Champions League or the Europa League.

UEFA Europa League: 2nd tier European football competition. The "next-best" teams from the leagues in Europe get assigned to 12 groups of 4, where they play the same format as the Champions League. The only difference is that after the group stage you have 24 teams. The 8 3rd place teams from the Champions League are added at this point to make 32, so they then play knockouts from there. In England to qualify for the CL you need to finish 5th or 6th or win the EFL Cup or FA Cup. If a team that already qualified for the CL or EL by league position (top 6) wins one of those cups, then the 7th place team can get into the Europa League.
