Washington announced as new manager of Cobh Ramblers

Washington's Notes: Really excited to get my first official position as a manager, and it's in the Emerald Isle to boot! Guess they really liked my interview, because it sure as hell wasn't my resume. I knew that it'd be worth the risk to have a career involving the beautiful game in beautiful locations. "You'll never find a job", they said. "You'll become a laughingstock", they said. Well, that second one may end up true, I suppose. Just need to work hard and show results on the pitch! While we (I love that I can say this now) may be small, we're currently playing above expectations so I hope that I can keep this team rolling. There's some interesting pieces on this team and while we don't have many games left this season, I hope I can leave my mark here before too long. Time to get the ball rolling and start working on a tactic that can let these players shine

Washington's Notes: Paid to coach, wow. That won't get old for me. Not getting paid a whole lot so I'll probably have to find a roommate in a foreign country, that should be an... interesting experience. Ah well, at least Cobh is a beautiful area to live. 6 months isn't a long time to prove myself - hopefully they go well! The club culture and goals fit me well. Focusing on improvement is always my personal focus not matter what I'm doing, so that's a good fit there. Given our current position of 6th after 17 games, it hopefully won't be too hard to stay competitive. The lack of a transfer budget and semi-professional status will be a challenge, but beggars can't be choosers and I'll work with what I can

Introduction to Cobh Ramblers

Image

Team Best XI:

Image

Club History: CRFC was originally a field hockey club but until the British withdrawal from Ireland many club members played football with the soldiers who were stationed at Cobh, leading to the Ramblers' eventual re-formation as a football club.

Ramblers played in the 1976 FAI League Cup, reaching the semi finals.

Cobh Ramblers joined the League of Ireland in 1985, after many successful years as a Munster Senior League side. One of the most successful of those teams was the team of 1983, who got to the semi final of the FAI Cup humbling many senior clubs on the way. They met Sligo Rovers in the semi-final that year and captured the imagination of the Irish footballing public, drawing crowds of over 20,000 to Flower Lodge for the home games as St Colmans Park was too small. There were 3 replays until Sligo finally won 3–2 and went on to win the Cup.

Cobh won promotion to the Premier Division in 1988, after finishing First Division runners-up to Athlone Town. Lasting just one season in the top flight, they won promotion again at the end of the 1992–93 season, this time as runners-up to Galway United. A play-off win over Finn Harps saw Ramblers retain their Premier Division status at the end of the 1993–94 season, but the club were relegated in second-last place the following year.

With Ramblers having played all but four of their League of Ireland campaigns in the First Division, they rarely get to play their local rivals Cork City, a Premier Division team, with the two usually only being able to match up in pre-season friendlies and the occasional cup match, Cobh being the minnows in terms of League of Ireland experience.

In recent years, fan numbers have not been as high as they were during the glory days when Ramblers were in the top flight of Irish football and playing glamorous pre-season matches against the likes of Celtic and Arsenal. Though even with its lower attendance at home matches (usually about 600 or so, over 1000 for the 2008 season), the fans in attendance are loyal and take part in club fund-raisers and events as well as watching the match. It is hoped though that with a new younger generation becoming interested in the League of Ireland, due to promotion of the league and sport as a whole, that attendance and the fortunes of the club might improve.

Ramblers appeared on live television for the first time on Friday, 10 November 2006 in an away fixture at Galway United, where they lost 1–0.

On 10 November 2007 Cobh Ramblers beat Athlone Town 1–0 in Lissywoollen in what was a tense and nervous display. This victory gave Cobh Ramblers their first piece of Senior Silverware and crowned them First Division Champions. During the 2007 season, with their young squad, they recorded a 27-game unbeaten run, keeping 22 clean sheets. Their points tally of 77 points was also a record for the league.

However, after suffering relegation from the League of Ireland Premier Division, Ramblers subsequently failed to obtain a licence for the First Division due to financial constraints and so compete in the Newstalk A Championship (Ireland's third tier).

In 2010 Ramblers missed out on gaining promotion back to the League of Ireland losing to Salthill Devon in a play off.

The Ramblers most noted past player is former Irish international and Manchester United star Roy Keane, while Irish international Stephen Ireland is a product of the Youth System. Westlife singer Nicky Byrne, also a talented footballer who was on the books at Leeds United, had a spell with the club too.

On 18 March 2014, the club parted company with manager Dave Hill by mutual consent after five years. He was replaced by Martin Cambridge on an interim basis. In March 2015 Martin Cambridge tendered his resignation and Stephen Henderson returned to the club as first team manager. In Oct 2015 Stephen Henderson signed a new three-year contract with the club. In 2016 Henderson guided Ramblers to munster senior cup victory and to a 3rd-place finish in the first division. Cobh Ramblers were the only side to defeat first division champions Limerick that season and this coincided with a run of 5 victories in their last 5 league games to reach the play offs. They narrowly lost 3–2 on aggregate to Drogheda Utd despite overturning a 2–0 deficit in the return leg at United Park after only nine minutes.

In 2018 Ramblers reached the final of the EA Sports Cup Final. In the semi final they defeated Dundalk 1-0 at home with young striker Chris Hull scoring the winner. Despite beating Dundalk and denying the eventual champions a treble the rams lost the final away to Derry City 3-1

Stadium:St Colman's Park was redeveloped during the mid-2000s. Construction of a new state of the art changing facility and press office along with a new Chairman's office was completed in 2006 along with new floodlights and a 900-seater stand replacing the old shed. The east stand, too has seen improvement with 450 new seats being installed. Plans for a new 900 seater stand adjacent to the existing stand have temporarily been put on hold due to minor financial difficulties at the club. A new slick surface was also added prior to the clubs admission to the Eircom/Airtricity League Premier Division in 2009.

The stadium has hosted international underage games including games in the 1994 UEFA European Under-16 Football Championship qualifiers.

Munster Schools Senior Cup games have also been staged at the stadium including the final which was won by local Cobh school, Coláiste Muire in 2010.

Supporters: Cobh Ramblers have a loyal fanbase. The "Claret and Blue Army" as they are known, used to locate in the East stand, behind the goal. Nowadays they locate at the far end of the South stand. They cheer the team on through their unique chanting. There is also a Cobh Ramblers Supporters Club, who are involved in fundraising for the club.

Cobh Ramblers 2019 Preview

Current League Table

Image

Washington's Notes: Well, this Cobh squad is solidly midtable at the moment - we have half the points of 2nd place Shelbourne and about twice as many as last place Limerick F.C. With only 10 games left in the season, there's certainly much more potential to move down as compared to up, so we better be ready to fight for our spot. If we get really lucky, we may be able to contend for 4th and a playoff spot. Still, I'm more focused on defending our current position than anything else.

Senior Squad

Image

Washington's Notes: This squad has some talent, for sure. Young star Charlie Fleming looks to be a recent addition to the squad, and hopefully he'll make immediate impact for us out on the right. His partner on the right flank, Ian Walker, is by far the most (financially) valuable Rambler. I'm expecting that the two will make for a good combination in our remaining games. The rest of the squad looks to be still works in progress for this level, with particular standouts in keeper Adam Mylod and central defenders David Hurley, James McSweeney, John Sweeney, and Ben O'Riordan. It's a good thing we have that depth in the back, as Hurley is currently injured (Twisted Ankle, 10 days - 3 weeks) and O'Riordan is suspended for the next match. Striker Brian Murphy is the squad's leading goalscorer, with 10 goals in 17 appearances (which ties him for the league lead). We'll need him to keep up that performance to stay competitive in the league! All in all, the squad is filled with youth and talent, just the way I like it given my tendency for rotation - these young players will get plenty of chances to showcase their talent. I call them young, but several are older than me! Hopefully I can gain the respect of the locker room.

Captains

Image

Washington's Notes: Pretty explanatory choices here - Mylod and Murphy are definitely the strongest leaders on the team. Given my tendency for rotation, I'm always happy when the keeper makes a natural leader - having the same guy wear the armband game in and game out does wonders for the squad. Murphy as vice-captain is a nice reward for his strong first half

Primary Tactic

Image

Washington's Notes: Well, I'm certainly deviating from the Best XI the board gave me when I took over, so I'm going out on a bit of a limb here. I'm a surprisingly big fan of running the 4-2-4, as you see here - with the right midfielders, I've found that it allows a team to both dominate possession and create several scoring opportunities. It can put defenders on a bit of an island at times, but I'm confident that we have the players in back to handle the challenge. As to up front, I'm hoping when can compensate for this weaker area of the team with sheer numbers. Looking at this tells me that we need to improve our strikers and midfielders ASAP - given the team makeup (and lack of transfer budget), I hope these young players can rapidly improve. I will, however, be looking at the Free Transfer market to add to the forwards as we're going to be running a 2 striker formation with a lack of team depth and both being natural poachers. I will be flexible in my tactics, however - if we really struggle with the 4-2-4, I may have to move the wingers back and run a more traditional 4-4-2. It'll all depend on the season progresses

Youth Squad

Image

Washington's Notes: Ah yes, the youth squad - where tomrrow's future stars flourish. Most of the talent appears focused in defensive positions, much to my benefit. A team can never have too much talent defensively in my opinion (aside from, of course, managing to play them all!). As the senior team is also relatively stocked at these positions, most of them are on the loan list, as they're approaching the age at which playing benefits them more than training (hopefully they go to squads with better training facilities than ours, which are frankly quite shit).

Youth Intake Preview

Image

Washington's Notes: The next intake (which I may not even see, talk about a short contract) is looking promising. While lacking numbers, it seems to make up for in quality and position. The squad is in desperate need of young, talented forwards, and it looks like we'll be getting them. I don't want to comment too much on the predicted intake, as a lot can change between now and when they actually play for the club

Interesting tactic. I'll be curious to see how it plays out.
