Wolves Agree to Sell Ross Barkley to Arsenal for £21.1M

Image
It's not that Ross Barkley has been poor the past few years at Wolves, he hasn't, he's been solid. It's that the club is looking to move in a different direction. After another disappointing Champions League campaign, Nuno is reevaluating how he wants to build his squad to start competing with the European giants on the biggest stage. The club has been married to the 4-2-3-1 formation for the past three seasons, but there are rumblings that he wants to move to a more inventive 5-2-3 formation featuring a back 3, flying wingbacks, energetic midfielders and inverted wingers linking with a target man striker up top. Nowhere in that formation is there room for a traditional #10 or central-attacking-midfielder which means Barkley is on the chopping block. He remains in the premier league with his move to Arsenal however, and should be a formidable opponent for Wolves when he joins the North London side next season. There is talk that Nabil Fekir's position in the team could also be in danger despite 15 goals and 9 assists in all competitions this season. He too reprises the central attacking midfielder role that will not exist at Wolves next year, and lacks the positional flexibility to be deployed elsewhere.
