Let's not fly too close to the sun now. Sid has the Islanders' number though.

Can Sam Poulin get his NHL career back on track after seeing his development stall in the minors?

Pittsburgh receives injection of youth, call up F Samuel Poulin, send Blomqvist back

PITTSBURGH, PA -- - The Pittsburgh Penguins, amid a two-game skid at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals after ripping off six straight wins, look for an injection of offensive youth. They announced this afternoon that they have recalled forward Samuel Poulin from their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins.

Poulin, a 23-year-old forward from Blainville, Quebec, who the Penguins drafted 21st overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, has seen his star dim quite a bit as he has not progressed into the full-time NHL player the Penguins hoped he would become five years into his pro career. He has enjoyed a fine start to his 2024-25 season in the AHL, scoring four goals and six points in 11 games into the campaign. The Penguins hope his well-rounded game and hunger to stay in the NHL will jumpstart his abilities.

The team has seen the offense dry up and losses shuffle in when captain Sidney Crosby and star Evgeni Malkin can't manage to get on the scoreboard. They have also seen winger Rickard Rakell on an offensive drought while rookie Rutger McGroarty continues to suffer from the adjustment to the big leagues despite playing on Crosby's wing.

Hoping to thrust some speed and scoring into their bottom six, they are expected to make forward Blake Lizotte a healthy scratch for the Penguins' upcoming home game against the Dallas Stars, inserting Poulin into a role with center Kevin Hayes and winger Noel Acciari. The top six forwards are not expected to be touched.

The team also announced that they will be sending goaltender Joel Blomqvist back to the minors, citing the need for him to polish up on some of his skills. Coach Mike Sullivan was adamant that we have not seen the last of Blomqvist this season, but he should be playing a starting role in Wilkes-Barre as opposed to being part of a three-goalie tandem in Pittsburgh.

Blomqvist played in three games this season with the Penguins, producing a .859 save percentage and a 3.26 goals against average.

A streaky team so far. When you win, you go on a run but when you lose, it’s ugly for a bit!

We can't find any semblance of consistency, but at least we're currently losing to good teams like Carolina and Washington
