Fox Sports to Sign Exclusive WWE Deal after Wrestlemania 37

Image
Wrestlemania 37 takes place in a few days, but afterwards, WWE Is expected to make some major changes to the structure of its programming. After 28 years of Monday Night RAW operating as the flagship show of the company, it will finally be coming to an end. WWE will not be renewing their deal with USA Network, and instead be signing a massive exclusive programming deal with Fox Sports to continue airing Smackdown Live on Friday Nights and make it the #1 show in the company.

With this happening, WWE will be moving away from its current brand split format, and all of its current championships will either be unified or rendered defunct, and the Cruiserweight Championship currently exclusive to NXT, will be moved to Friday Nights. This will leave the WWE Championship, Intercontinental Championship, United States Championship, Smackdown Tag Team Championships and Cruiserweight Championship as the main titles on Smackdown Live. The women's division has been cut entirely, in a controversial move, however there are rumors of WWE possibly starting a new women's exclusive show down the line.

The advantage of having one unified roster means instead of WWE viewers being subjected to the same, stale matchups week after week; there will be more superstars available allowing for unique matchups. Additionally there will be no question of whether the WWE Champion or Universal Champion is the top guy, or whether the Smackdown or RAW Tag Team Champions are the top tag team. There will only be one top singles superstar and one top tag team, allowing WWE fans to have a proper understanding of who the main guy is, and also giving WWE itself and its sponsorship partners that clarity as well.

Fox Sports has wanted WWE to move a little bit away from being pure entertainment and more towards sports entertainment in line with some of its other programming as well. WWE expects to act on this by doing certain things like keeping track of and publicizing superstars' win-loss records, hosting tournaments to compete for championships, and having more athletically demanding and appealing matches. This marks a new direction for the company, but also one that's expected to grow a fanbase that is still largely remnants from the more popular Attitude and Ruthless Aggression eras. Vince McMahon is expected to still be in charge, but take a backseat in day-to-day operations and allow Triple H more creative control, a welcome change for any fans of his work with NXT.

Introducing: Adam Cole

Image
Adam Cole arrived in NXT with a mission to “shock the system.” The black-and-gold brand hasn’t been the same ever since.

Irreverent, highly decorated, and undeniably a big-match player, Cole was already drawing comparisons to a young Shawn Michaels by the time he made his unannounced NXT debut at TakeOver: Brooklyn III. It was there that The Panama City Playboy emerged from the stands to join Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly in attacking then–NXT Champion Drew McIntyre. The NXT Universe’s chorus of “Adam Cole, Bay Bay” made it clear that a new main-event Superstar had arrived, but nobody realized that NXT was also witnessing the formation of what would become its most successful faction: The Undisputed ERA.

With Cole leading the charge, The Undisputed ERA soon expanded to include Roderick Strong, and together, the four Superstars achieved nothing less than total domination, wiping out the competition and collecting championships en masse. None more so than Cole, who lays claim to being not only the inaugural NXT North American Champion, but also the second NXT Triple Crown Champion in history — a feat he accomplished by beating Johnny Gargano to win the NXT Title at TakeOver: XXV.

Introducing: AJ Styles

Image
To describe AJ Styles in a word? What else? Phenomenal.

Absolutely no one can deny Styles’ ability. Known the world over for his in-ring prowess, thrilling aerial maneuvers and supreme confidence, Styles has found success everywhere he’s traveled. He's accumulated an incredibly impressive résumé, capped off by sports-entertainment's most prestigious title, the WWE Championship, which he's captured twice and held for an astonishing 371 days in his second reign.

Since making his long-awaited WWE debut in the 2016 Royal Rumble Match, The Phenomenal One has brawled with the likes of Roman Reigns, Kevin Owens, Shinsuke Nakamura and Brock Lesnar, and has further solidified his abilities with big victories over John Cena, Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan, all while backing up his claim that SmackDown is "The House that AJ Styles Built!"

Introducing: Aleister Black

Image
Aleister Black enters the ring with total composure and masterful precision, emerging from the quiet darkness just long enough to knock someone’s head off.

Trained in kickboxing and the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat, the Dutch Superstar boasts a world-class arsenal of strikes, none more disruptive than his Black Mass spinning heel kick. MMA pioneer Bob Schrijber was among Black’s early mentors, and before coming to NXT in 2017, the head-rocking Superstar spent years dominating independent wrestling circuits around the globe.

His path of destruction carried into the black-and-gold brand, where he went undefeated in one-on-one competition for over a year before winning the NXT Championship at TakeOver: New Orleans.

Introducing: Andrade "Cien" Almas

Image
As a third-generation luchador, Andrade was born to be a Superstar, and he’s happy for it. The life suits him. Endlessly talented and even more confident, Andrade enjoys the perks that come with squared circle stardom.

Andrade’s inherent skill for the family trade was unmistakable from the moment he debuted at age 13. He first established himself in his native Mexico and Japan, capturing championships in both countries. In WWE under the direction of Zelina Vega, Andrade used uncanny speed and ring awareness to ascend to the top of the black-and-gold brand when he captured the NXT Championship at NXT TakeOver: WarGames in 2017.

After joining SmackDown in 2018, Andrade took every opportunity to catch the attention of the WWE Universe and put on several instant classics during an intense rivalry with Rey Mysterio. And after being selected by Raw in the first round of the 2019 WWE Draft, Andrade reignited his issues with The Master of the 619 and defeated him to capture the United States Championship.
