WWE Set to Undergo Major Changes Following Endeavor Acquisition

May 1st, 2023

HARTFORD, CT --- Endeavor acquired World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for $9.3 billion back in April, and many wondered what being housed under the same umbrella company as the UFC would mean for the WWE's future. Today, we have found out exactly what it will mean. WWE plans to undergo a major restructuring of its roster and championships. Previously, the company boasted a Universal/WWE Championship held by its top star, Roman Reigns, and several other titles such as the United States and Intercontinental with no clear delineation between divisions or who can compete for what. Today, all of that changes. WWE will be scrapping all of its current titles in favor of a weight class driven structure reminiscent of that found in the UFC, boxing and other combat sports. Its Heavyweight division, featuring superstars weighing 240lbs or more, will be led by former Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns. The new light heavyweight division, accommodating superstars weighing between 206 and 239lbs will be headlined by Seth Rollins, who was reportedly slated to become the WWE World Heavyweight champion by way of tournament, before this new restructure. The last male singles division will be the cruiserweight division. That title will debut as vacant with the eight superstars in the division competing against one another to become the inaugural champion. Rhea Ripley, the former WWE Smackdown Women's Champion is set to be at the forefront of the women's division. And finally, the tag team of Jimmy and Jey, the Usos, members of Roman Reign's faction, The Bloodline, will lead the only openweight division, the Tag Team division.

Each of these five divisions will feature eight superstars (or eight teams in the case of the tag division), and superstars will not be able to compete for titles that they do not match the weight class for. WWE plans to also start taking a more sports oriented approach towards matches as wins, losses and draws will all be tracked, and each division will have an ELO based rankings system. These rankings will determine top contenders, qualifiers for major gimmick matches and many other thing. Essentially, wins and losses will matter a whole lot more than they have previously in the company, and superstars will need to bring their A-Game every single week to have a shot at title belts. We at FOX plan to do a deeper dive into each of the divisions in the coming days, providing you more in-depth knowledge on the makeup of each of these divisions and what the superstars in them have to offer.

Heavyweight Division Breakdown

Image
(Top left to bottom right): Lashley, McIntyre, Gunther, Corbin, Kross, Owens, Knight, Reigns

Bobby Lashley | Stats: 6'3, 273lbs, 46 years old | Billed from : Denver, Colorado | Finisher: Hurt Lock
Lashley debuted in WWE in 2005 but took a hiatus to pursue MMA after just a few years in the company. After re-establishing himself as a main event star in Total Nonstop Action (TNA) back in 2009, he returned to WWE in 2018 where he quickly rose to the top of the company. In March of 2021, he would become the first African-American to win the WWE Championship.

Drew McIntyre | Stats: 6'5, 265lbs, 37 years old | Billed from: Ayr, Scotland | Finisher: Claymore
McIntyre, like Lashley debuted in WWE in the mid-2000s. He was dubbed "The Chosen One", hand-picked by Mr. McMahon to one day become the face of the company, but that would not come to fruition. He too had to prove himself in the indies and later, TNA, before returning to the company. He first rose to the top of WWE's developmental territory, NXT, as champion before eventually winning the WWE Championship over Brock Lesnar during COVID.

Gunther | Stats: 6'4, 297lbs, 35 years old | Billed from: Vienna, Austria | Finisher: Powerbomb (Symphonie des Schmerzes)
The Ring General, Gunther, believes the mat is sacred. He is the leader of a group of international heels, Imperium, bent on returning purity back to the WWE and the sport of professional wrestling in general. He is a ring technician, skilled on the mat and with strikes. Prior to the recent changes to WWE, he was well on his way to becoming the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion.

Happy Corbin | Stats: 6'8, 285lbs, 38 years old | Billed from: Lenexa, Kansas | Finisher: End of Days
Formerly known as Baron Corbin, Happy Corbin has had a change of gimmick over the past few years, but remains just as deadly. Despite having never won any of the WWE's major world championships, he is a former King of the Ring and Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal winner. Corbin possesses quite possibly the best finisher in the company, the "End of Days". Living up to its moniker, it has never been kicked out of, and the modified facebuster can be hit out of nowhere and from virtually any position in the ring.

Karrion Kross | Stats: 6'4, 265lbs, 37 years old | Billed from: Sin City | Finisher: Kross Jacket
Buoyed by his voluptuous but equally dangerous wife and valet, Scarlett Bordeaux, Karrion Kross is a threat every time he comes out to the ring. Scarlett is famous for holding up an hourglass, indicating that time is running out for Karrion's opponent, and it is only a matter of time before his opponents go to sleep when locked in his Kross Jacket finisher, as the clock ticks down on their life in the matchup.

Kevin Owens | Stats: 6'0, 266lbs, 39 years old | Billed from: Montreal, QC, Canada | Finisher: Stunner
Kevin Owens is the definition of an enigma. He looks like just your regular guy with his large beer belly and lack of muscle definition, but can absolutely GO in the ring. From top rope moonsaults to incredible powerlifting moves, Owen is one of the most skilled in-ring competitors in the company.

LA Knight | Stats: 6'1, 240lbs, 40 years old | Billed from: Los Angeles, California | Finisher: Gravy Train
LA Knight is the smallest member of the heavyweight division, but talks the biggest game. He has reminded fans around the world of a blend of both The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin's talking styles, as everyone around the arena echoes his "YEAH" quips every time he has a microphone in his hands. Knight can wrestle as well, having previously held the Impact World Championship in TNA, but is still on the hunt for his first piece of WWE gold.

Roman Reigns | Stats: 6'3, 265lbs, 38 years old | Billed from: Pensacola, Florida | Finisher: Spear
The tribal chief, the head of the table, beast mode, number one. Roman Reigns is without a doubt the top superstars in WWE and pro wrestling as a whole today. A member of the prestigious Anoa'i family that also includes The Rock, Reigns has more than lived up to the family name. Not only is Reigns an absolute monster in the ring, capable of leaving opponents crippled with his patented Spear or lifeless with the Guillotine chokehold, but he is also the leader of the Bloodline faction. With his advocate, Paul Heyman and cousins, The Usos by his side, Reigns is nearly invincible, and will be tough for ANYONE to topple as Heavyweight Champion.
