WWE Rebirth: Nitro vs. One Night Stand

Image

Heading into April 2005, the start of the new WWE calendar year, a seismic shift rocks the world of professional wrestling as a visionary entrepreneur decides to rewrite the script for the WWE Universe. Eric Bischoff, the mastermind behind WCW's rise to prominence, steps back into the spotlight and resurrects the iconic WCW Nitro brand, claiming Monday nights as the battleground for the new era.

Meanwhile, the enigmatic Paul Heyman, the mad genius behind the original ECW, reclaims his throne to breathe life back into the rebellious spirit of extreme wrestling. Heyman declares Thursday nights as the domain of ECW One Night Stand, promising chaos, unpredictability, and a brutal alternative to the mainstream.

With the stage set, the rosters are divided, each brand boasting a unique flavor and roster of legendary and emerging talent. WCW Nitro, under the reign of Eric Bischoff, becomes a powerhouse featuring iconic figures like Booker T, Bret "The Hitman" Hart, AJ Styles, and the likes of Goldberg and Hollywood Hogan. The gold standard is set by champions Randy Orton (World Heavyweight), Umaga (United States), and Syxx (Cruiserweight).

ECW One Night Stand, curated by the mad genius Paul Heyman, showcases a roster with a rebellious edge. The Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar, finds himself at the forefront, Heyman's chosen warrior to battle for the newly established ECW World Heavyweight Championship. Rob Van Dam, who retires the WWE Intercontinental Championship, now holds the ECW World Television Championship. Jacqueline stands tall as the ECW Women's Champion, ready to prove that extreme doesn't discriminate.

The battlegrounds are set, and the war between WCW Nitro and ECW One Night Stand promises to redefine the very essence of professional wrestling. With legendary clashes, unexpected alliances, and the relentless pursuit of glory, the WWE Universe in 2005 is destined for an era of unparalleled excitement and chaos. The Monday and Thursday night wars have returned, and fans around the world eagerly await the next chapter in this gripping saga.

Match #1: Syxx vs. The Hurricane | One on One :threehalfstar:
In the opening match of the new WCW Nitro, the Cruiserweight Champion, Syxx went one on one against The Hurricane in non-title action. This seemed like it would be an easy win for Syxx but Hurricane was causing him all kinds of problems and dominating the early part of the match. Suddenly, Hurricane caught Syxx with a Superman Punch and looked to have won it but Syxx grabbed the ropes just before three. He rolled outside and tried to use the outside to his advantage, which worked for a bit until Hurricane was able to get things back into the ring. Inside, he hit an Eye of the Hurricane and a second Superman Punch to pin the champ. Syxx was pissed off after losing and tried to attack Hurricane from behind, but the superhero dodged it then punched him several times in the face before clotheslining him out of the ring, leaving the champ even more embarrassed.

Match #2: Scott Steiner vs. Zeus | One on One | #1 Contender's Match :threehalfstar:
The Genetic Freak vs. The Human Wrecking Machine. Scott Steiner and Zeus faced off in a #1 contender's match where the winner would face Umaga at Backlash for the WCW United States Championship. Both of these men are physicals specimens and used brute force against each other to try to get the win. But it seemed like Zeus was just that much stronger than Big Poppa Pump. He always had an answer for what Steiner threw at him, and it wasn't long until he was able to hit him with the Wrath of God Chokeslam to pick up the victory. After the match, Umaga came out to the stage and stared down Zeus but neither man moved towards the other. This is going to be a showdown when these two eventually face off for the belt.

Main Event: ??? vs. AJ Styles | One on One | #1 Contender's Match :fourstar:
AJ Styles was awarded a chance to compete in a #1 Contender's Match for Randy Orton's WCW World Heavyweight Championship, but he would only just now find out who his opponent was. The lights went out all of a sudden, and then a crow called... STING was here and back in WCW and back in WWE for the first time in years! These two had an excellent match and Sting nearly won it with a Scorpion DDT late on, but Styles countered it into a Styles Clash. Sting kicked out but was badly hurt so AJ started to press the advantage. He tossed Sting out of the ring and hit a big diving splash, then rolled him back in and readied the Phenomenal Forearm. Sting dodged it though and when Styles turned around he got caught in a Scorpion DDT that put him down for a 3 count. Sting barely had a chance to celebrate the victory though as Randy Orton slithered into the ring and smashed him over the head with the title right after the bell rang. He then RKO'd Sting when he got up and stood tall over him with the title raised as the crowd descended into boos and the show ended.

Match #1: Mick Foley vs. Rob Van Dam | One on One :threestar:
Two ECW originals, Mick Foley and RVD shook hands cordially before this match got started in a show of respect for each other. They had a great match but the Television Champion, RVD, would come out on top in the end. He set up Foley for the Five Star Frog Splash but Mick rolled out of the way at the last second. He then tried to hit the Mandible Claw on RVD who was lying flat on his back, but Van Dam countered it into a School Boy Roll Up pin to get the three count. RVD celebrated outside the ring as Mick Foley sat in the ring with a wry smile on his face.

Match #2: Trish Stratus vs. Chyna | One on One | #1 Contender's Match :twostar:
Trish was getting dominated by Chyna in this match and after getting hit with a clean shot to the face clutched at it and rolled out of the ring, appearing to be checking out of the matchup. But the Women's Champion, Jacqueline was waiting for her outside the ring and tossed her back in to face Chyna. Chyna looked to capitalize but Trish was surprising ready for her and dodged her attack. She then caught Chyna with a Chick Kick out of nowhere to knock her out cold and grab the upset win. Stratus is the new #1 contender for the ECW Women's Championship!

Main Event: Brock Lesnar vs. Shelton Benjamin | Extreme Rules | ECW World Heavyweight Championship :fourstar:
Paul Heyman announced before the show that Brock Lesnar, having most recently held the WWE Championship and not been pinned in losing it, would have the opportunity to compete for the ECW Championship against an opponent of his choosing. Brock entered the ring and then made an announcement, "I wanted to give this opportunity to a guy I came up with, someone who I roomed with and teamed with in college at Minnesota, a guy who's never had a shot at a world title... my friend, Shelton Benjamin." A gleeful Shelton Benjamin came out to the ring and the ref rang the bell to start the match. Shelton seemed to... have Brock's number. Lesnar normally runs through his opponents but Shelton's experience wrestling with him in college meant he knew all his moves, when he'd execute them and how to counter them. Lesnar looked shook and when things spilled to the outside it got even worse for him. Benjamin sent The Beast careening into the ring post to disorient him before hitting the T-Bone Suplex for a 2 count. When Lesnar stumbled to his feet, Benjamin went for the Paydirt but Lesnar caught him on the way down and nearly delivered an F-5 but Shelton held onto the ring ropes to prevent it. He crawled back into the ring and caught Brock with the surprise Paydirt when he came in after him. Knowing that wasn't enough to keep Brock down, Benjamin went to the ring apron and waited for Lesnar to get to his feet. He then leapt over the top rope did a flip and hit a brand new move, the Buckshot Lariat to send Lesnar to the mat, completely flipping him over in the process. Shelton then pinned him to the mat for a three count to become the first ECW World Heavyweight Champion and win his first world title in pro wrestling.
