Wrestling's Bold Revival: WWE's Attitude Era Resurgence

Image

In a surprising turn of events, the world of professional wrestling is set to undergo a seismic shift as WWE CEO Vince McMahon pulls out all the stops to revive interest in the sport. Following the ill-fated attempt to make ECW the second brand, a move that saw ratings plummet the night Shelton Benjamin claimed the ECW title, McMahon has decided to go back to the roots that brought wrestling to its pinnacle: The Attitude Era.

The announcement comes with the declaration of a new era, as Monday Nights will once again become the battleground for two wrestling behemoths. WWE Chairman Vince McMahon and WCW icon Eric Bischoff are set to rekindle the flames of the Monday Night Wars. In this unprecedented move, Bischoff will take the reins of Monday Nights with the revival of WCW Nitro, while McMahon retains control of Friday nights with WWE Friday Night Smackdown.

The shakeup doesn't end there. In a bold and ruthless maneuver, McMahon and Bischoff have made the decision to part ways with several stars from the Ruthless Aggression era who, despite their prowess, failed to capture the imaginations of fans in recent years. Notable departures include industry icons John Cena, Batista, Brock Lesnar, and even the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, Randy Orton. The message is crystal clear: out with the new, and in with the old guard of wrestling, the stars who defined The Attitude Era and the Monday Night Wars.

Each brand will have its own distinct roster and championships, reminiscent of the glory days. WCW Monday Nitro will showcase the WCW World Heavyweight, WCW United States, and WCW Cruiserweight Championships, while WWE Friday Night Smackdown will feature the WWE Championship, Intercontinental Championship, and Women's Championship.

The climax of each month will witness a convergence of these two wrestling giants at Pay-Per-View events, where the best of both worlds will collide in a spectacle reminiscent of the golden age of wrestling. McMahon and Bischoff are banking on this clash of titans to reignite the passion of fans and bring back the edgy, unpredictable, and unapologetically entertaining spirit of The Attitude Era.

As the wrestling world braces itself for this monumental shift, only time will tell if this gamble pays off and propels professional wrestling back to its former glory. The return of The Attitude Era within the time of Ruthless Aggression promises to be a nostalgic journey for long-time fans and an exhilarating ride for those new to the spectacle of Monday Night Wars. One thing is for certain – the landscape of professional wrestling is set for a thrilling transformation.

May 2005 | Week 1 | WCW Nitro

Image
Match #1: Syxx vs. The Hurricane | One on One :threehalfstar:
In the opening match of the new WCW Nitro, the Cruiserweight Champion, Syxx went one on one against Big Poppa Pump, Scott Steiner to excite the fans. Both superstars put on a show and Syxx was able to lock in the Buzzkiller submission finisher a few times but never able to force the tap from Steiner. Syxx went for the Top Rope Facebuster in desperation but Scott Steiner lowblowed him out of the referee's view and then shoved him to the mat. Steiner then hit the Steiner Screwdriver to pin the Cruiserweight Champion in WCW's return.

Match #2: Ted DiBiase vs. Diesel vs. Ultimate Warrior vs. Razor Ramon vs. Randy Savage vs. Zeus | Battle Royal | WCW United States Championship :threehalfstar:
Eric Bischoff declared that there would be a Battle Royal to crown a new United States Champion after Umaga was fired and forced to vacate the title in the WWE/WCW's new roster revamp. Ultimate Warrior got the first elimination, sending DiBiase flying over the top rope early with an Irish Whip early. The match continued and then Warrior went on a rampage, tossing out Diesel, Zeus and Razor Ramon leaving just himself and Randy Savage in the ring. The Macho Man and the Warrior traded blows but Warrior was able to get Savage down on the mat and hit his trademark Body Splash on him. He then picked up the weakened Savage and tossed him over the top rope to claim the WCW United States Championship.

Main Event: Goldberg vs. Andre the Giant | One on One | #1 Contender's Match :fourstar:
Eric Bischoff awarded Hollywood Hogan the WCW World Heavyweight Championship before the main event, declaring that Hogan was his talisman and deserved to be the champion. However, to be "fair", he would allow two superstars to compete in a #1 Contender's Match to face the newly crowned champion at the next pay-per-view, Backlash. Goldberg and Andre the Giant were the lucky two competitors selected. Goldberg tried to use his speed advantage combined with his strength to get Andre off his feet but the bigman was too hard to move and surprisingly nimble as well. He nearly beat Goldberg early with a big boot but ran into trouble when he took too much time going for his Elbow Drop. Goldberg got out of the way and by the time Andre got up, he was on the receiving end of a spear and down in the middle of the ring. Goldberg showed an incredible feat of strength lifting The Giant up into a Jackhammer but that was only enough for a two count. He was visibly frustrated and decided to drag Andre over to the corner. He moved Andre up to the top turnbuckle, then climbed himself and superplexed The Giant. The ring collapsed and both men were down but only Goldberg would beat the 10 count from the official, winning the match and securing the right to face Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.

May 2005 | Week 1 | Smackdown!

Image
Match #1: Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels | One on One | WWE Championship Qualifier :fourstar:
As Smackdown! kicked off Vince McMahon announced that a new WWE Champion would need to be crowned. Over the next four weeks a series of one on one matches would decide the four men who will compete in a Fatal 4-Way match at Backlash for the title. Each of these matches would be between long-time rivals who have serious scores to settle. First on the docket, former D-Generation X tag team partners, Triple H and Shawn Michaels. These two put on a show and Shawn looked to have it won when he hit a Sweet Chin Music out of nowhere but HHH kicked out at two. Shawn then went for a Diving Elbow Drop but HHH rolled out of the way at the last second then caught Shawn with a Pedigree, but he too was able to kick out of his rival's finisher. HHH started pressing the advantage after that but ended up getting caught with another Sweet Chin Music when he got too cocky, but was able to just grab the ropes to prevent a loss. Shawn lined up another one in the corner and started to tune up the band but when he went for it, HHH ducked under his leg, spun around and hit him with a second Pedigree in the middle of the ring to get the pinfall and secure a spot in the WWE Championship Fatal 4-Way. After the match, HBK offered HHH a handshake but Hunter slapped his hand away and told him to get to the back of the line where he belongs.

Match #2: Jacqueline vs. Nikki Bella | One on One | WWE Women's Championship :fourstar:
Like HHH earlier, Bella was offered a handshake but disrespected it by slapping Jacqueline in the face before the match started. When the bell rang, Jacqueline started like a house on fire as the Women's Champion completely dominated Bella. She was able to hit her Float Over DDT finisher, but went for the pin too close to the ropes and Nikki was able to get a leg on them to stay alive. Jacqueline tossed her outside of the ring and this is where her mistakes began. She went for a top rope diving move from the ring to the outside and missed and Nikki started to deal some serious damage on the outside. The two brawled and the count reached 8 when Bella was able to get a poke to the eyes outside of the ref's view and then hit Jacqueline with a Rack Attack. She then rolled her back into the ring and pinned her to win the Women's Championship.

Main Event: Goldberg vs. Hollywood Hogan | One on One :fourstar:
In a colossal showdown, #1 contender Goldberg faced WCW World Heavyweight Champion Hogan in a non-title bout, promising fireworks from the get-go. The intensity reached a boiling point when, in a twist of fate, Goldberg accidentally clotheslined the referee, leaving the match without an official. Seizing the opportunity, Eric Bischoff tossed a chair into the ring for Hogan. The atmosphere turned sinister as Hogan mercilessly battered Goldberg, drawing blood with the steel weapon. A devastating leg drop followed, and with the referee miraculously revived, Hogan secured a cheap pinfall victory. Post-match, Bischoff, the puppet master, handed Hogan another chair, turning the ring into a battleground. With a menacing warning to Goldberg, Hogan unleashed a barrage of chair shots, leaving a battered and bloodied Goldberg at his mercy. The statement was clear – dare to challenge Hogan's reign, and face the ruthless consequences orchestrated by Bischoff's cunning hand.
