Friday Night Smackdown! Set to Return in May
The Associated Press
April 2nd, 2004
HARTFORD, CT --- After WWE mysteriously went off air after Undertaker's win in the Royal Rumble. It looks like the company is set to resume action after being off air for the longest extended period since RAW first aired back in 1993. The company will be returning to the single show model with Friday Night Smackdown! taking over from the long-running Monday Night RAW as the flagship show of the company. This simplified model will feature just four championships, clearly delineating the top champion in each division of the company. The Undisputed WWE Championship returns as the top prize in all of wrestling, held by none other than Dave Batista, who defeated The Rock back in 2003's Survivor Series for the previously unified World Heavyweight and WWE Championships. John Cena reprises his role as Intercontinental Championship, the belt signifying the top mid-carder and top worker in the company. Jacqueline, who last won the Women's Championship in Survivor Series of 2003, will also reclaim her place at the helm of the women's division. Undertaker and Kane return as the WWE Tag Team Championships, looking to defend their gold against a loaded tag division that features the likes of D-Generation X, the nWo, the Rock 'n' Sock Connection and more.
Below is WWE's new Friday Night Smackdown! roster for the upcoming 2004-05 season.

May 2004 | Week 1
Bret Hart tried to show some good sportsmanship to one half of the Brothers of Destruction, Kane, at the start of the match, but was quickly rebuffed. Bret reached out to shake Kane's hand and the Big Red Machine slapped him instead before starting off an assault at the start of the matchup. Kane would pay the price for that insolence though as Hart was the superior wrestler and eventually took control of the match. After Kane regained some momentum with a sidewalk slam, Bret slipped out and hit a piledriver on Kane. That was only enough for a 2.5 count, but Bret didn't hesitate and quickly locked in the Sharpshooter to force Kane to tap out in the center of the ring. Big statement from The Hitman, and will he and his tag partner, Jim, have their sights set on Kane and Undertaker's WWE Tag Team titles next?

Beth Phoenix put up a great fight here against the Women’s Champion, countering her Float Over DDT finisher several times. But in the end, Jacqueline would catch Beth with it after countering a Glam Slam to get the win. Post-match, Jacqueline showed great sportsmanship offering a hand shake to the up and coming women’s superstar, and Beth obliged as they shook hands in the center of the ring.

Batista and Kurt had an argument over who should start out this matchup, with the World Heavyweight Champion eventually winning out and kicking things off. The Animal put on a dominating display, brutalizing Edge before he tagged in Rey Mysterio, and then making quick work of Mysterio with a Batista Bomb for the victory. Angle looked frustrated at not even having the opportunity to participate in the matchup, however.

Brock and Hogan faced off in a match in which the winner would earn the 1st spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match. Brock was dominating the former WCW legend, but interference from the nWo evened the odds for Hollywood. At one point, Brock had it won after an F-5, but Kevin Nash reached into the ring and put Hogan's arm on the ropes to break up the three count. Brock would get his later though, smashing Hogan with an F-5 after a set of triple powerbombs to secure his spot in the Money in the Bank match.

John Cena faced off against the man he dethroned to win the Intercontinental Championship months ago, Randy Orton. The two faced off in one on one non-title action in the main event. Orton looked to be the hungrier competitor and it showed as he was all over John Cena from the onset. Cena countered Orton's first attempt at and RKO and tried to turn it into an F-U, but failed. Shortly later, Orton would catch the IC champ off guard with another RKO attempt, pinning him for the victory. That wasn't enough for Randy though as he decided to stomp Cena out repeatedly after the match yelling, "I'm getting that title back" repeatedly as the referee tried to restrain him. Orton earned his spot in the Money in the Bank match, but might be looking for more than just that briefcase come the pay-per-view.
