WWE Returns to RAW vs. Smackdown! Brand Split Following Survivor Series

Image
HARTFORD, CT --- Survivor Series is over and apparently so is the run for RAW as the only show in WWE. Behind closed doors, Shane McMahon unveiled a clause showing that if Team nWo defeated Team WWE in the traditional Survivor Series match, he would gain rights to his own show once again, and that's exactly what happened with Sting, AJ Styles, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall defeating Mike Kanellis, Finn Balor, Voodoo and Big Show at Survivor Series. After the show was over, Shane and Vince conducted a closed draft, where Vince selected the new World Heavyweight Champion, Batista, #1 overall, while Shane selected The Rock #2 overall and also reactivated his WWE Championship. Vince proceeded to select the Intercontinental Champion, Randy Orton, and the Women's Champion, Jacqueline, making the IC Title and the Women's division exclusive to RAW. In response Shane took the United States Champion, Kurt Angle, and made Rey Mysterio and the Cruiserweight division exclusive to Smackdown!. The WWE Tag Team Champions, the Street Profits, went to Smackdown! as well, while Vince reactivated the vacant World Tag Team Championship as RAW's exclusive tag team titles.

The full rosters of both shows after the draft can be seen below. Vince is expected to continue running RAW like an entertainment show, while Smackdown! will take more of a professional sports approach to things.

Show Opener Promo: Randy Orton
Randy Orton opened up the show after retaining his Intercontinental Championship at Survivor Series against Shinsuke Nakamura. He stated how now that he was drafted exclusively to RAW, he would be making it HIS show, even if the WWE looked at the Intercontinental title as the B-Championship. Shawn Michaels came out to a burst of cheers from the crowd and interrupted his little tirade. Michaels said that HE is the guy everyone pays to come see, and he's been that guy for over a decade in the WWE. He said that Orton had a nice run as champion and was a promising young talent, but the Heart Break Kid was the true #1 attraction on RAW. Orton started to get angry and spoke again, "Shawn, I am the alpha of this roster and the omega of your career. How about you put your money where your mouth is? At the end of the month at Armageddon, I'm going to give you a shot at this Intercontinental Title. WHEN you lose, you'll never be allowed to compete for the belt ever again."

Match #1: Faces of Fear vs. The Outsiders| Tag Team
RAW has vacant World Tag Team titles at the moment, and Vince McMahon decided that the two tag teams that show him the most over the next few weeks, will be pitted against each other for the belts at Armageddon. Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, now called The Outsiders after turning on the rest of the nWo, came out for the first match in this showcase. Shortly after them we heard Kane's music, but instead of Undertaker (who's now on Smackdown!) coming out with him, it was Voodoo as part of a new team, the Faces of Fear. They took on the Outsiders, and after Kevin Nash was forced to tag in Scott Hall, Voodoo and Kane started to dominate Hall. Voodoo hit the Chokebomb, but Kevin Nash rushed in to break up the pinfall. However immediately after, Kane hit him with a Chokeslam, and Voodoo hit the Voodoo Bomb on Hall to pin him and grab the victory for his team. Following the match, the Dudley Boyz appeared on the ramp and stared down the Faces of Fear, seemingly laying down a marker against them for the vacant titles.

Match #2: Beth Phoenix vs. Lita vs. Mickie James | Triple Threat
With Trish Stratus falling to Jacqueline at Survivor Series, a new #1 contender for the WWE Women's Championship needed to be selected, so Beth Phoenix, Lita and Mickie James faced off in a match to crown that woman. This match wasn't particularly long. All three women got their offense in at the start, but then Beth Phoenix started to take control of things. The Glamazon tossed Mickie James aggressively over the top rope and out of the ring, then turned to face Lita one on one. Lita tried to use her speed and attempted a moonsault from the top rope, but Beth stood up, caught her, and hit her with a Glam Slam before pinning her to become the new #1 contender.

Show Closer Promo: Batista
The new World Heavyweight Champion, Batista, came out to address the WWE Universe. He was welcomed with boos and addressed them immediately, "A lot of you seem to think I didn't earn this title. I didn't win the King of the Ring tournament to get the Money in the Bank briefcase, I just beat Big Show for it afterwards. I didn't beat The Rock for his title in a one on one match, I just cashed in the briefcase on him afterwards. I don't deserve this right? Right? WRONG! I've earned this title and it's about damn time I get the recognition I deserve. And just to prove to you that I'm not scared, I'm going to hand out a title opportunity right now and call out one of the biggest icons in all of wrestling to face me for this belt... the ICON, Sting." Sting came out after that but didn't say anything, he just stood on the stage and pointed in Batista's direction with his baseball bat as the champ motioned to his belt as if to say, "You want this? Come get it."

WWE Championship Tournament Announced on Smackdown!

Image
Shane McMahon claimed the WWE Championship for his Smackdown! brand during the draft, but there is currently no champion as things stand. To crown a new champion, a tournament will take place over the next four weeks, culminating in a Fatal 4-Way Match for the WWE Championship at Armageddon. The top 8 seeded wrestlers on Smackdown! have been selected to participate in the competition: The Rock, Brock Lesnar, The Undertaker, Edge, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Big Show and Bulk Bronson. Kurt Angle and John Cena would have taken up the last two spots, but those two are expected to be involved in a program for the United States Championship instead. These stars will take on each other in one match per week for the next four weeks, with the winners qualifying for the Fatal 4-Way match at the pay-per-view. First up on the docket this week will be Bulk Bronson looking to grab a major upset victory over former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion, The Rock.

Match #1: Rey Mysterio vs. Donny Zenk | One on One
Rey Mysterio made surprisingly quick work of the former United States Champion, Donny Zenk to open up the show. After winning the match with the Frog Splash, he grabbed his championship and turned to leave the ring, but a new superstar, Kenny King, was standing on the stage. He just stared down Rey Mysterio, then smiled before walking off.

Match #2: Apollo w/ Ted DiBiase vs. Charlie Haas | One on One
Mansa had the night off so Apollo was set to face off with a returning Charlie Haas (who was sporting his Team Angle gear) in singles action. Apollo offered a handshake to Haas before the match but pulled it back as soon as he reached for it, mocking him. The referee rang the bell and Haas was all over Apollo, he was the better technical wrestler and it showed as his mat game seemed to leave Apollo without many options. Haas almost had him beat with a Bridging German Suplex, but Apollo just kicked out. Then the tide started to turn as Apollo got in some combination punches before knocking Haas clean out of the ring. When Haas got back in the ring though, he used the rope to stun Apollo before rolling him up into a complex looking school boy pin. Apollo couldn't work his way out of it and ate the first loss for either member of the Street Profits in over two months. Haas rolled out of the ring and laughed then said to Apollo, "You may have beaten Team Angle to win those tag titles, but now you're facing the REAL Team Angle. Not the one with Daniel Bryan, the one with me next to Shelton, Charlie Haas."

Match #3: John Cena vs. Kurt Angle | One on One
Kurt Angle bumrushed the ring and mounted Cena and started hammering away at him with his fists. The referee rang the bell and things were under way with Angle having a distinct advantage. There was major blood between these two after the way in which Angle stole Cena's United States Championship opportunity. Angle looked to retire Cena early at one point in the match, laying him on the announce table before going for a diving moonsault to put him through it, but Cena rolled out of the way just in time causing Angle to badly hurt himself. Cena rolled Angle back into the ring then hit the F-U and covered Angle for what looked like a sure victory, but Kurt had the wherewithal to "accidentally" hit the referee and prevent the pin. Cena went to check on the ref and Angle went for a chair. He hit Cena with it, then wrapped it around his ankle and stomped on it, badly wounding Cena's leg. Then the referee came to and Angle locked Cena in an Ankle Lock that he simply had to submit to because of all the pain. Big win for US Champ.

Main Event: (1) The Rock vs. (8) Bulk Bronson w/ Bobby Heenan | One on One | WWE Championship Fatal 4-Way Qualifier
Bulk had a massive challenge to face here with The Rock, although the challenge was reduced with The Rock not at 100% after what happened at Survivor Series. Bulk knew his best chance was to go all out and try to end things as quickly as possibly with his raw power. He was actually overwhelming Rocky, and almost had him beat at one point after hitting a Spear and Kudo Driver, but the People's Champ kicked out at 2. Then The Rock started to gain some momentum, hitting a pair of clotheslines then a spinebuster. He set up and delivered the People's Elbow, but to the shock of the entire arena, Bulk kicked out at two. The match continued and The Rock looked to hit another big move on Bulk, but he countered it into a Pop-Up Powerbomb, which The Rock would still kick out of. Then Bulk took it to the next level, Superplexing The Rock off the top rope, but The Rock still managed to kick out just before the referee could get to three. Bronson kept pressing, putting The Rock on the top rope again, this time looking for the Muscle Buster. He was about to hit it but The Rock slipped out, spun Bulk around and hit him with the Rock Bottom before pinning him to advance to the Fatal 4-Way match. After it was over, The Rock helped Bulk to his feet and congratulated the future star on a hell of a performance, as they both stood with their arms raised in the center of the ring as Smackdown! went off the air.

Shane McMahon Changes the System

Following the first episode of Shane McMahon in charge of Smackdown!, he did what the McMahons always do and changed things up again. He announced that he'd be assuming full control of WWE and bringing back RAW is WAR but with a brand new twist. For years, WWE had focused on individual superstars and tag teams taking on each other for titles. Now he wanted to make it like other professional sports leagues and have official teams or factions competing against each other for supremacy. The 40-man RAW is WAR roster will feature 10 teams of 4 superstars, with each team having a main eventer to compete for the WWE Undisputed Championship, a mid carder to compete for the WWE Intercontinental Championship and a tag team to compete for the World Tag Team Championships.

The teams and their rosters were rolled out and revealed individually on WWE.com.
