June Week 2 | Hartford, CT
The feud continues to rage on between the Dudleyz and the Hardyz. This time, Matt took on D-Von in a singles match with both brothers barred from ringside. These two aren't really known for their singles work but they put on a great show in which both guys had their signature moves and finishers countered multiple times. It was D-Von who would come out victorious though, catching Matt with an inverted DDT to win the match. And of course winning, as usual, was not enough. D-Von stopped to think for a second before leaving the ring, then proceeded to stomp the living hell out of Matt Hardy before the referee could pull him away.
Winner: D-Von Dudley by Pinfall.
Match #2: One on One Normal: Kurt Angle vs. Triple H
This was supposed to be a contest between Kurt Angle and Triple H, but Undertaker came out just before the bell rang to act as HHH's "manager". After the interference from HHH last week in Taker's loss to The Rock, it seemed certain Taker would look to exact some form of revenge and he did exactly that. After Triple H pedigreed Kurt, he went for the pin, but Undertaker grabbed Angle's leg and put it on the bottom rope breaking up the pin. An infuriated HHH got into a heated argument with Taker after that, but when he returned to the ring Angle was waiting for him with an Angle Slam and put him down for the win. HHH and Taker have now both successfully screwed each other in consecutive weeks.
Winner: Kurt Angle by Pinfall.
Match #3: KOTR Round of 16: Shawn Michaels (#3) vs. Rey Mysterio (#14)
Shawn Michaels nearly won this in the first few minutes. He dominated offensively from the onset, and after a diving elbow drop, hit a Sweet Chin Music on Mysterio that should have ended the match, but Rey showed incredible heart to kick out at 2.99. It took him a while to get back into the contest and he did but HBK again gained the advantage and went for a second Sweet Chin Music. This time Rey dodged, and knocked HBK into the ropes before delivering a 6-1-9. His ensuing West Coast Pop drew a huge pop from the crowd as he pinned HBK in a major upset to advance to the quarter-finals. After the match, HBK showed some serious class, shaking hands with Mysterio and applauding his big win.
Winner: Rey Mysterio by Pinfall.
Match #4: KOTR Round of 16: Edge (#11) w/ Christian vs. Brock Lesnar (#6) w/ Paul Heyman
Edge might has well have not even shown up to this match. Lesnar never let him get any offense going, and despite Edge shockingly kicking out of the first F-5, that only made Brock angry and the second F-5 moments later would drop Edge for good. Brock advances to the quarter-finals easily.
Winner: Brock Lesnar by Pinfall
Match #5: KOTR Round of 16: Kane (#7) vs. Randy Orton (#10) w/ Ric Flair and Batista
Randy Orton, Flair and Batista showed exactly what strength in numbers means in this match. While Orton was clearly at a disadvantage against Kane, his Evolution buddies more than evened the odds with their ringside antics. They were constantly distracting both Kane and the referee in an effort to give Orton a leg up and it eventually paid off. Orton is known for being able to hit the RKO out of nowhere, and even being distracted for just a split second is enough for him to capitalize. And that is exactly what happened when Orton hit an unsuspecting Kane with his finisher for the 3 count. Kane looks extremely frustrated and dejected by the loss after the match, as he was a favourite to go far in this tournament and instead will be leaving in the first round.
Winner: Randy Orton by Pinfall
Main Event: KOTR Round of 16: John Cena (#15) vs. The Rock (#2)
There was a lot of hype for the young upstart John Cena coming into tonight, which is precisely why this match was picked to be the main event. He didn't live up to it at all. Cena looked desperate early on, going for pins after basic moves and not even getting 1 counts. Eventually The Rock got tired of toying with him and hit a series of moves followed by a Rock Bottom to get a very easy win over the self-proclaimed Doctor of Thuganomics.
Winner: The Rock by Pinfall
