Top 15 USF Players of Francois Era: No. 5 - No. 1

No. 5: ILB Dallas Gross (2023-2025)
Recruiting Profile: 22nd ranked ILB in 2023 | 6'0", 234lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star
Career Stats: 332 tackles, 71 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 6 interceptions, 2 touchdowns, 14 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles, fumble recovery.
Games Started: 41
Record as Starter: 35-6
Record vs. UCF: 3-0
Conference Championships: 2 (Big XII)
Bowl Record: 2-1
BCS Bowl Record: 2-1 (Sugar, National Championship)
National Championships: 1-0
Accolades: 2023 1st team All-Big XII, 2024 1st team All-Big XII, 2025 1st team All-Big XII, 2023 Freshman All-American, 2023 1st team All-American, 2024 1st team All-American, 2025 1st team All-American, 2024 Bednarik Award recipient (best defensive player), 2024 Nagurski Award recipient (best defensive player), 2024 Butkus Award recipient (best LB).

Squatty and limited athlete. That was the knock on Gross coming out of high school and why 21 other inside linebackers were ranked higher than him. USF didn't hesitate to pull the trigger on the local product and here he is now in the top five with a solid claim to be ranked higher.

Gross was everything Scott Stewart was before him and more, becoming one of the better inside linebackers as a true freshman with ninety-six tackles that season as he earned his first of what would be three 1st team All-American honors. What was even more impressive was that Gross was the team's signal caller on defense, which is insane for a true freshman.

Gross' running mate was Travis Hughes who missed portions of their sophomore season which put even more on Gross' plate and he ate, recording 39 tackles for loss that season on his way to a Bednarik, Nagurski and Butkus award. While both players clearly enjoyed playing with each other and made the other better, Hughes being out allowed for fans to have a lot more appreciate for Gross as he was asked to be a more aggressive at the point of attack and make plays beyond the line of scrimmage as opposed to being a sideline to sideline linebacker roaming the middle of the 3-3-5 defense.

No. 4: QB Michael Harrell (2019-2021)
Recruiting Profile: 2nd ranked QB in 2019 | 6'2", 213lbs | Oviedo, FL | 4-star
Career Stats: 560 of 743, 6138 yards, 56 touchdowns, 29 interceptions, 415 carries, 2857 yards, 26 touchdowns.
Games Started: 37
Record as Starter: 35-2
Record vs. UCF: 3-0
Conference Championships: 3 (Big XII)
Bowl Record: 3-0
BCS Bowl Record: 3-0 (Sugar Bowl, National Championship)
National Championships: 1
Accolades: 2021 2nd team All-Big XII

Perhaps the best winner in school history, some might even consider Harrell to be in the top three of the team's best players of all time. He took over as a freshman a rudderless offense that had gone through two play-callers in four games and seemed destined for a 'rebuilding' year where bowl eligibility was the goal. They ended up winning twelve games that year and the Big 12 championship, the school's first.

A limited quarterback in 2019, Harrell was a dynamic one in 2020 and beyond. He led the team in rushing during the 2020 season and set the school's single-season passing touchdown record in 2021 while still rushing for 877 yards.

What keeps Harrell outside of the top three? There are a lot more accomplished players behind him and in front of him on this list. At one point, Harrell was as low as 13th on this list but being in the national championship picture for three straight seasons as the team's best player on offense gets him in the top five.

No. 3: HB Troy Henry (2020-2022)
Recruiting Profile: 3rd ranked RB in 2023 | 5'10", 195lbs | Alexander City, AL | 5-star
Career Stats: 608 carries, 4310 yards, 48 touchdowns, 158 receptions, 1345 yards, 11 touchdowns.
Games Started: 42
Record as Starter: 39-3
Record vs. UCF: 2-1
Conference Championships: 3 (Big XII)
Bowl Record: 3-0
BCS Bowl Record: 3-0 (Sugar, National Championship)
National Championships: 1-0
Accolades: 2020 1st team All-Big 12, 2021 2nd team All-Big 12, 2022 1st team All-Big 12, 2020 Freshman All-American, 2020 2nd team All-American, 2023 1st team All-American, 2023 Heisman Award winner (best player), 2023 Maxwell Award Winner (best offensive player), 2023 Walter Camp Award Winner (best offensive player), 2023 Doak Walker Award Winner (best RB).

Henry can go as high as number one on this list and not any lower than three, maybe four on any respectable list of USF greats.

He rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of his seasons and led the team in receiving yards as a sophomore all while splitting carries in a loaded backfield his first two seasons.

After winning the national championship in 2022, it was all Henry in 2023 as the offense lost most of its firepower. Henry carried the load, rushing for a school record 2125 yards with 28 touchdowns along with 59 receptions for519 yards and 4 touchdowns. Henry won the Heisman, Maxwell, Walter Camp and Doak Walker Award that season, sweeping the college football awards.

A versatile running back, Henry might be the team's biggest home run threat ever. His career YPC is over seven and his 59 total touchdowns are ridiculous when you consider that he split time for 2/3rd of his career at USF.

No. 2: QB Jed White (2025 - )
Recruiting Profile: 6th ranked QB in 2025 | 6'5", 239lbs | Miami, FL | 4-star
Career Stats: 661 of 895, 7897 yards, 76 touchdowns, 33 interceptions, 476 carries, 3359 yards, 60 touchdowns.
Games Started: 27
Record as Starter: 25-2
Record vs. UCF: 2-0
Conference Championships: 1 (SEC)
Bowl Record: 1-0
BCS Bowl Record: 1-0 (National Championship)
National Championships: 1-0
Accolades: 2026 1st team All-SEC, 2027 1st team All-SEC, 2026 1st team All-American, 2026 Heisman Award winner (best player), 2026 Maxwell Award Winner (best offensive player), 2026 Walter Camp Award Winner (best offensive player), 2026 O'Brian Trophy Winner (best QB), 2027 Maxwell Award Winner (best offensive player), 2027 Walter Camp Award Winner (best offensive player)

If White's junior season had gone better, he probably ends up at #1. The crazy thing is even with his 'struggles', he still won the Maxwell and the Walter Camp Award once more.

A day-one contributor, White led the team as a true freshman being used as a utility player behind quarterback Nick Williams. It was evident through White's first fourteen games as a college pro that he was going to be a star and the Bulls were ranked #2 heading into the next season despite White having zero career starts under his belt.

It didn't seem to matter as White knocked the door down with ease in the team's first season in the SEC and was the driver of one of college football's best teams ever and certainly a top five offense of all time.

No. 1: LB Travis Hughes (2023-2025)
Recruiting Profile: 1st ranked OLB in 2023 | 6'5", 211lbs | Miami, FL | 5-star
Career Stats: 355 tackles, 88 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, 11 interceptions, 2 touchdowns, 17 pass breakups, forced fumble, fumble recovery, safety.
Games Started: 37
Record as Starter: 31-6
Record vs. UCF: 3-0
Conference Championships: 2 (Big XII)
Bowl Record: 2-1
BCS Bowl Record: 2-1 (Sugar, National Championship)
National Championships: 1-0
Accolades: 2023 1st team All-Big XII, 2024 1st team All-Big XII, 2025 1st team All-Big XII, 2023 Freshman All-American, 2023 1st team All-American, 2024 1st team All-American, 2025 1st team All-American, 2023 Bednarik Award recipient (best defensive player), 2023 Nagurski Award recipient (best defensive player), 2023 Butkus Award recipient (best LB), 2025 Bednarik Award recipient (best defensive player), 2025 Nagurski Award recipient (best defensive player), 2025 Butkus Award recipient (best LB)

You knew while it was happening -- and for some, before -- that Hughes was going to be an all-time great. A rare combination of size, speed and football instincts, Dave Doeren isn't the head coach at Old Dominion without Hughes.

When asked, he could be the team's best run stuffer, best edge setter, best pass rusher and even moved to the perimeter against spread offenses. If not for an injury his sophomore season, Hughes could have been a three-time Bednarik, Butkus and Nagurski award winner but twice is plenty impressive.

His statline year by year:
Freshman: 131 tackles, 38 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 5 interceptions.
Sophomore: 106 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 interceptions.
Junior: 104 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 6 sacks, 4 interceptions.

Nothing else needs to be said as to why he's #1.

Old Fashioned Whipping! Bulls Blow Out Minnesota 60-10 in the Citrus Bowl
With a forty eight points lead and seconds left in the game, USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. caved to his players demand.

He trotted quarterback Jed White out there for one more snap on the two-point conversion and with the entire defense fixated on White, running back Ronnie Smith walked into the endzone. White couldn't have been happier and more expressive in his celebration, perhaps showing the reason why college football will miss his special talent.

Even with USF pulling some of its starters for the second half, the damage was already done as they trounced the Minnesota Gophers 60-10 to win the Citrus Bowl.

White played just one quarter and a half, leaving the game for Jay Jackson following Jason Finley's touchdown run to make it 21-0. The defense intercepted Minnesota's Noah Carroll four times in the first half, including a pick six by edge rusher B.J. Patton who had dropped into coverage and surprised Carroll.

Lashlee announced as Arkansas' next head coach
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

USF offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee has been officially announced as the University of Arkansas' next head coach for their football program. Lashlee beat out his former mentor in UCLA offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who like Lashlee, is an alumni and from the state.

The 44-year old offensive coordinator will try to lead the Razorbacks back to their winning ways with the program winning ten games just once since 2011. Arkansas has not won a bowl game since their Cotton Bowl victory in 2011.

We know who won't be one of the candidates to replace Lashee at USF and that is former USF offensive coordinator Walt Wells. Wells was fired by Michigan after just one season and didn't take long to find another posting, taking the head coaching job at Syracuse following Bog Davie's retirement at 73.

For continuity, the team could make a run at Malzahn who runs a similar offense as Lashlee but it'll be a tough sell to the veteran head coach. Staying out west, former head coaches Hugh Freeze (San Diego State) and Kevin Sumlin (Washington) are among the big names that USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. might try to chase after.

Fired head coaches Clay Helton and Kevin Brown have also been rumored along with former USF assistant Calvin Magee, who is currently the OC at South Alabama.

Veteran offensive mind Calvin Magee hired as Bulls next offensive coordinator
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

The University of South Florida has hired long-time offensive coordinator Calvin Magee to be the school's third offensive coordinator in as many years.

Magee played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the late 80s and shortly after a high school coaching career around the Tampa area, Calvin was a member of the University of South Florida's first coaching staff in 1996 where he remained until 2001 when he joined Rich Rodriguez's staff at West Virginia University. Magee followed Rodriguez to the University of Michigan in 2008, where he served as offensive coordinator until Rodriguez and his staff were fired after the 2010 season. Rodriguez is widely credited with innovating the spread option offense, which Magee managed at West Virginia and Michigan.

Magee interviewed for the job along with Washington offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin and former USF quarterback Grant Oliver, who was most recently the offensive coordinator at Michigan under Walt Wells. Oliver accepted the head coaching job at East Carolina.

Magee's return to Tampa is a celebrated one by many of the fans despite not having been a Power 5 coordinator since 2017. The 64-year old will try to have to have a second wind akin to Doc Holliday, who coaches for three seasons at USF before retiring and led them to a national championship.

USF's Lott, Swain and White declare for the draft as juniors
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

As expected, former Heisman winner and USF junior quarterback Jed White officially declared for the draft in a joint press conference with juniors safety Jake Lott and defensive end Kyle Swain.

Swain and Jacobs were both first team All-Americans this past fall while White won his second Maxwell and Walter Camp Trophy. White leaves USF as its all time leader in both passing and rushing touchdowns, accounting for 138 touchdowns in three seasons at USF, two he spent as the team's starting quarterback.

The Bulls will need to reload in 2028, as expected for any teams that loses its start quarterback and its top two defensive players. They also will need to replace 3/5th of their starting offensive line as well as three starting linebackers in Danny Love, Dan Miller and Brandon Walker. Defensive tackle William Levine leaves a huge gap in the middle of the Bulls defense with the senior starting the past three seasons at defensive and nose tackle.
