Top247 CB Kareem Hunter picks Bulls over other SEC programs
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
USF's secondary has been among the nation's best the last few seasons and it's getting richer. Four-star cornerback Kareem Hunter out of the state of Virginia has picked the Bulls over offers from Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.
Hunter, who is the fifth ranked cornerback this cycle according to 247 Sports rankings, is the team's sixth commitment and the third on defense. He's the third highest ranked prospect committed and with good reason. Despite being a bit undersized at five-foot-nine, Hunter is among the nation's fastest prospects with a verified 40-time of 4.3. A technician on the outside, Hunter is a very polished corner who compares favorably to former Bulls cornerback Pierre Francois.
He's not as physical as Francois and will need to work on his tackling in order to be an SEC level slot corner. Can he survive on the outside despite being five-foot-nine? Potentially but ideally he'll be a nickel corner in the Bulls sub package although Francois eventually became a boundary corner.

Run of the Bulls ‣ USF Football News
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer
‣ QB Whitehead to miss several weeks, surgery not required for elbow injury
USF will be without quarterback Antonio Whitehead for the "next few games" according to USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr.
Francois Sr. confirmed that the quarterback won't require surgery on his left elbow after initially injuring it against Ole Miss and worsening the injury a week later in the team's loss to Ohio State.
Replacing Whitehead, who is third in the country in passing yards, is senior George Mobley. Mobley had thrown four interceptions this season already along with three touchdowns.
The Bulls are aided by an upcoming bye week following this week's matchup against Mississippi State although Francois Sr. hasn't given an exact timetable on Whitehead's injury. Fans can infer from Francois Sr.'s statement of Whitehead missing a few games that the team's week eleven matchup against Miami is likely the best Bulls fans can hope for.
‣ Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M agree on exit fees for early exodus to the SEC
USF has potentially a new open slot on their non-conference schedule for next season as Texas will be part of the SEC in 2030 along with Oklahoma and Texas A&M.
All three schools were able to come to an agreement with the Big XII which will allow them to leave the conference for the SEC as early as next season. The final details of the exit fee agreement hasn't been disclosed but has been rumored to be in the $40 million range for each school, almost half of the original $70 million tag that was floated around when these discussions first began.
The Big XII's decision was likely one they had to come to grips with as allowing all three schools to play out the final six years of their TV deal and then leaving would likely mean the end for the conference. Hopefully, the added revenue from these fees would allow them to not only keep the remaining nine teams intact but potentially add more. Houston has been the top target for the school to add as a tenth team.
Meanwhile in the ACC, Notre Dame is finalizing a deal to join the conference as its sixteenth member while Army is being heavily considered, according to Sports Illustrated, as an addition to the Big Ten as its sixteenth member once Vanderbilt joins next season.
Notre Dame and Army being independent programs allows them to join a conference without as many roadblocks.
‣ USF RB Harrell involved in on-campus incident
Sophomore running back Pookie Harrell was detained by campus police Sunday night after they were called to his on-campus apartment and was released that same night.
According to the campus police report, several residents of the apartment building filled in noise complaints Saturday night and early Sunday morning against Harrell due to loud music being played from his apartment. When the RA of the building could not get Harrell to turn down the music, campus police were called. The report lists that there was a smell of marijuana in the apartment but none were found upon a search of his apartment.
Harrell was detained for questioning but eventually released. Harrell was not made available to the media on Wednesday but was seen at practice all week.
USF has declined to comment on the situation.

USF is in Shock After The Devastating Loss to Mississippi State
USF QB Antonio Whitehead's Heisman moment might have came when he wasn't on the field.
Without Whitehead, USF's offense floundered to the tune of five turnovers including George Mobley's fourth interception of the day to Ryan Copeland with less than a minute left in the game to seal the Mississippi State Bulldogs' 16-13 upset win over the Bulls on Saturday.
Mobley, despite his previous three interceptions, had a chance to win the game at the end after USF's defense made four straight stops including two drives where Mississippi State's offense got the ball within the Bulls' 40-yard line due to turnovers. The Bulls offense got within nine yards of the endzone when Mobley tried to connect with tight end Jean-Jacques Francois but Copeland was able to jump up and snag the ball.
The Bulls still outgained the Bulldogs despite their offensive woes to the tune of 411 yards of offense compared to the Bulldog's 313, the bulk of which came on the ground with John Gordon rushing for 188 yards. The Bulls also had a higher third down conversation rate, 63 percent, compared to the Bulldogs' 38 percent rate. In the end, it was the five turnovers that buried the Bulls and likely all hopes of competing for a national championship once Whitehead returns.

Five-star outside linebacker Hughes commits to USF as Bulls land second five-star of the class
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
The nation's eleventh ranked recruit Adam Hughes has committed to USF over hometown schools Alabama and Auburn.
Hughes is the top ranked outside linebacker in the country this cycle and has been linked to USF for quite some time and received several crystal ball predictions to USF during his official visit a few weeks ago. Hughes visited Alabama and Auburn on unofficial visits this summer but never made it on campus this fall for an official visit before ultimately deciding on the Bulls.
As close to a can't miss prospect as one can be, Hughes will be a fun chest piece for USF defensive coordinator Pat Fitzgerald as he draws a lot of comparisons to former USF linebacker Travis Hughes whom he is not related to. Adam's 40-time is 0.02 seconds slower than Travis' coming out of high school and is a lot thicker than Travis was as a high school senior.
Hughes' freshman, sophomore and junior tape is filled with him making plays around the line of scrimmage and down the field. He primarily played a nickel/linebacker hybrid role his first two seasons at Memorial High School (Redstone Arsenal, AL). As Hughes continued to physically develop, he's moved closer and closer to the line of scrimmage and has played his senior season almost exclusively at defensive end.
Will he stay there at USF and be the next productive pass rusher to replace B.J. Patton? Or will he go back to his natural position at linebacker where he's capable of playing all three linebacker spots? The answer is probably somewhere in the middle given how then defensive coordinator Dave Doeren used Travis Hughes. They're lofty expectations but Travis finished his career at USF with 88 tackles for loss, 15 sacks and 11 interceptions and averaged over 100 tackles per season.

Bye Week Report: Whitehead's injury, Harrell's suspension threaten rest of the season
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
USF will be without two of its best offensive players for potentially the bulk of the second half of the season as quarterback Antonio Whitehead is out with an elbow injury and running back Pookie Harrell has been suspended indefinitely.
Harrell was detained two weeks ago by campus policy due to a noise complaint and according to the officers on the scene, a strong smell of marijuana emanated from his room. Harrell was dressed and on the sidelines for the team's loss to Mississippi State but never entered the game.
USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. spoke to the media on Wednesday during the team's bye week and confirmed that Harrell had been suspended for violation of team rules indefinitely. It's not great news for an offense that struggled against Mississippi State.
Team Leaders
Passing: Antonio Whitehead (82.3% completion, 1576 yards, 13 TD, 4 INT, 188.2 QB rating)

vs. #18 UCF (4-2) -- 7:00 PM
Biggest takeaways from first half of the season
- Whitehead was the right decision at quarterback
Even before George Mobley's eight picks on 73 pass attempts, Antonio Whitehead has shown why the staff was so comfortable making him the starter even after Mobley lit the world on fire during last winter's bowl game.
Whitehead is one of the better quarterbacks in the country and was sneaky good on the ground with 5.9 yards per carry and seven rushes of twenty or more yards. If they can get him healthy again for the stretch of games against the Florida schools, Whitehead has a shot at being an all-SEC selection.
-
- The Shelton Richardson comparisons for Mark Johnson were legitimate
No true freshman had a better offseason than linebacker Mark Johnson and he didn't even get on campus until the summer. He impressed during the summer workouts and then once the pads came on during fall camp, the buzz around Johnson was palpable when coaches and other players spoke about him.
He's been fantastic this season with a team-leading 50 tackles along with seventeen tackles for loss, the third most on the team and with two interceptions to round it off. He's a complete linebacker and could be a first-team All-American as a true freshman. His game is very similar to former Bull Shelton Richardson and not just because they wear the same number. It's early but Johnson is certainly on track to have just as good of a career as Richardson at USF.
-
- There is talent at receiver following mass exodus
It's unfortunate that both Andrew Rivas at Florida State and Jimmy Ingram at Arkansas suffered season ending injuries at their new schools early in the year.
USF, however, has done a good job of replacing those transfers with receivers Derrick Byrd and Pat Newsome having very productive seasons. Byrd is averaging over 50 yards per game while Newsome is slightly above thirty.
Brent Slaughter has also shown some flashes and Jeremiah McCullough has been a solid number four receiver in the offense this year. If Corey Montgomery and Byrd end up going pro, the team should be in good hands next season with Slaughter replacing Byrd on the outside and McCullough becoming the top option out of the slot.
What to watch for in second half of the season
- Will struggles against the run continue?
Any criticism of the Bulls defense can be seen as nitpicky but after allowing 187 yards on the ground against Mississippi State and 238 against Ohio State, it's fair to wonder if this is going to be the chink in the arm of the Bulls defense that opponents will exploit down the stretch.
Tennessee is a middle of the road rushing offense while Miami and Florida State are slightly better and could present some challenges. We'll know before their big November 17th matchup against No. 5 Florida just how good this defense is and if its good enough to beat the Gators by themselves which might be required if Whitehead isn't back in the lineup.
-
- Who replaces Harrell as the team's lead back?
After not playing in the last game and only playing in the first quarter of the Ohio State game, Pookie Harrell has just five more carries on the season than E.J. Thomas. Thomas is likely going to overtake Harrell as the team leader while Harrell serves out is indefinite suspension.
Thomas, however, is a limited running back when it comes to explosive plays and the team has had to rely on receiver Corey Montgomery more and more as a runner with twelve carries on the season. Ronnie Smith has also seen an increased workload and then there's Corey's younger brother, Anthony as well to consider.
-
- Can Mobley get back on track?
If Antonio Whitehead can't go for the rest of the season, USF's conference championship hopes will rely on if George Mobley can simply stop turning the ball over.
It's been a tough ask of Mobley who threw four picks last week against Mississippi State and just seems to miss the mark accuracy wise at the worst possible moments. It doesn't help that he's been inserted into the starting lineup while the team also had a bit of an issue at running back with Harrell's benching due to fumbling issues and subsequent suspension.
The Bulls don't have a strong and proven enough stable of running backs to rely on their running game like they did with James Pittman in the past who was a limited quarterback. Can they figure out the magic formula with Mobley?
