Volunteers Make History Once More, Hand Bulls Third Straight Loss; First in Francois' Career
Tennessee head coach Marcel Smith might have left the University of South Florida unceremoniously but he's getting the last laugh.
For the second year in a row, Smith's Volunteers handed the Bulls a loss, this time a 13-10 loss in Knoxville as USF dropped their third straight game on Saturday, a first under head coach Malcolm Francois Sr.
Similar to the loss to Mississippi State before the bye week and Ohio State before that, USF was in it until the end after its defense, led by B.J. Patton's incredible performance, shut the Volunteers offense down in the fourth and gave the Bulls offense three different opportunities to win the game.
They got close on the last drive but on fourth and nine, George Mobley was left to improvised after his receivers couldn't get open on the initial play call. He eventually threw a jump ball to Corey Montgomery that fell incomplete, just his fourth of the day.
Both defenses shined as USF put up just 264 yards of offense while Tennessee had more success with 384 yards, including a 44-yard scamper by the less than mobile Richie Nugent to get Tennessee out of the shadow of its own endzone and eventually set up the game winning field foal.
It's the Bulls first three-loss season since 2025 and unless they run the table, it'll be their first 3+ loss season since 2018 when they went 9-4 in their first season in the Big 12. USF will also likely be unranked come next week's BCS rankings which will be a first since the beginning of the 2023 season.

St. John Bosco star Roger Shaw Jr. becomes South Florida's eight commitment
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Four-star athlete Roger Shaw Jr. has committed to the University of South Florida, picking the Bulls over Ole Miss, Florida State, Miami and Minnesota.
Shaw is one of the fastest players in the state of California and his high school tape is a lot of fun to watch. Since transferring from Alhambra High School, where he was a dual-threat quarterback, to powerhouse St. John Bosco, Shaw has been the Braves do-it-all, dynamic player with fifteen total touchdowns in two seasons and over 2,000 yards of total offense.
According to Shaw, USF initially had been recruiting him as a running back but lately, it's been WR coach Malcolm Francois Jr. whose been his primary recruiter and with a ton of talent at running back already, it's easy to see why. USF has gotten bigger recently at receiver but not necessarily faster and Shaw can provide some deep threat ability to the Bulls offense that will be missing once Corey Montgomery and eventually Jeremiah McCullough move on.
Whose the next commitment now that Shaw is on board? It could be some more receivers in five-stars Chris Williams and Courtney Lane who both announced that they will be committing soon but haven't released a date yet.

How did it get here? USF's woes of late cannot be sole placed on Whitehead's injury
Jessica Kirkland -- SB Nation: USF Bulls Affiliate
USF redshirt sophomore Antonio Whitehead re-energized the fan base with a 18-second video that was also tweeted out by the Bulls official social media account. The video follows an equipment manager for the Bulls grabbing a pair of shoulder pads from the equipment room, shining up an helmet, throwing a jersey over it and placing it in front of a locker. The video then pans out to reveal that it's in front of a locker with the tag "10 - WHITEHEAD".
While no words were said in the video and it was provided without caption, the message is clear. Whitehead is back and he'll most likely start against the Miami Hurricanes this week to try to stop the Bulls three-game losing streak. Is it enough?
It wasn't that long ago that USF was the nation's second ranked team according to both the media and the coaches poll. While its easy to point to Whitehead's injury as the reason why, George Mobley was pretty damn good against Tennessee and considering that Mobley and Whitehead were neck and neck in the starting QB competition heading into fall camp, the drop off shouldn't have been that severe.
Several things have went into why USF is 5-3, out of the national championship picture and if not for Florida's slip up last weekend, could be kissing goodbye to conference championship aspirations.
- The gamble on Pookie Harrell finally crapped out
When USF started recruiting Harrell again following his junior season, many felt the team was taking an unnecessary gamble on a player with character issues coming out of high school. Harrell proved those doubters wrong in 2028, keeping his nose clean and scoring ten touchdowns.
After fumbling in back to back games this season, Harrell was benched and surprise surprise, didn't react incredibly well to adversity and got in trouble with campus police the following night which led to his suspension for the past two games. He returned to practice this week and could see his suspension lifted against his hometown Hurricanes but when USF needed its second-year, five-star running back to handle the load on the offense, he wasn't available.
Given Harrell's track record, fans shouldn't hold their breath on him being a feel-good, learned-my-lesson comeback type of story and instead brace for a potential transfer portal situation.
-
- Subpar recruiting along the offensive line
Sticking with the running game, or rather lack thereof against Tennessee specifically, the offensive line was pretty bad. Left tackle James King is having a down season after being a standout in 2028 and Andrew Smart at left guard has been the team's only consistent offensive lineman. Even with King's struggles, both King and Smart are the Bulls two best OL and they weren't recruited, they were transfers.
At center, it's a three-star in Jason Harrington who is a redshirt senior and a first-year starter who the Bulls had to make a late push in his recruitment to snag him. At right guard, former four-star Nick Matthews is still trying to find his footing while at right tackle its another fifth-year senior who didn't start until this season in former three-star Bryan McDonald.
From 2025 to 2027 -- the recruiting classes that should be shaping this year's team -- Matthews is the team's only signing along the offensive line that is ranked as a fourth star or a higher.
Things have flipped as of late with five-stars Michael Bowser and Daniel Moore last season but its going to be a while before those guys are ready and become impactful players. For now, USF is paying for the sins of its past recruiting classes.
-
- Misevaluations on E.J. Thomas and Anthony Montgomery
While some might argue its too early to call it, I'm ready to do so.
E.J. Thomas and Anthony Montgomery aren't five-star, blue-chip, can't miss prospects at running back. They're productive, short-yardage specialists that should have been ranked as four-stars or lower and looking at their athletic profile, it's clear that the recruiting services and USF overvalued their high school production where they were just simply bigger and more powerful than everyone else.
Thomas has seven touchdowns this season and is averaging four yards per carry while Montgomery is at 5.1 but anyone who has watched them can see a noticeable speed and explosiveness difference than when Harrell or even Ronnie Smith carry the ball. The Bulls continuing to recruit a ton of running backs this cycle shows that they just might have gotten it wrong at running back with those two five-stars. Good players, not great.
-
- Lack of a contingency plan following Jed White's departure
It was always going to be tough to sign an elite quarterback while Jed White was winning a Heisman as a sophomore as the top guys want at least an opportunity to start as a true freshman. The Bulls didn't sign any quarterbacks in their 2026 recruiting class and just a couple of low three-stars in James Brown and Tom Woods in 2028 after signing Antonio Whitehead in 2027.
That's how they ended up with a JUCO quarterback being their starter following Whitehead's injury when in past years, it would have been Nick Williams being replaced by White. Or Williams replacing an injured Mike McFarland, all four stars. The Bulls seemingly haven't learned from their mistakes as they don't have a quarterback committed for this cycle.
It likely won't happen now due to his injury but what if Whitehead had decided to go pro next season, the Bulls starter for next season was going to be a battle between Brown and Woods?

Whitehead's absence truly being felt. Shoutout to Georgia for keeping USF in contention for the division though, still a SEC Title within reach

Whitehead, Montgomery Put On Record Performance in Win Over Miami
He's back.
USF quarterback Antonio Whitehead's return to the football field from an elbow injury was loud and emphatic, throwing for a school record 504 yards in the Bulls' 48-16 win over the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night.
Whitehead threw six touchdowns, including four to receiver Corey Montgomery who tied a school record for most receiving touchdowns in a single game. Whitehead's first touchdown of the game came on the first offensive drive, connecting with tight end Jean-Jacques Francois down the middle of the field before the senior leaped between two Miami defenders to reach the endzone.
The Bulls kept rolling after that with Montgomery scoring a 83-yard touchdown after both teams swapped a field goal. His biggest play of the game came right before the half as the Bulls were able to score with 20 seconds left in the half on a touchdown pass to Jeremiah McCullough, force a three and out on defense and give the offense the ball back on the 25-yard line with 8 seconds left in the game.
After a 23-yard pass to Montgomery placed the ball on the Miami 47-yard line with 3 seconds left in the game, USF lined up with an empty set and with Miami defenders playing back, the Bulls surprised the Canes with a quick screen pass to Montgomery who weaved his way through traffic to score the 47-yard touchdown against his hometown Hurricanes.
