Oklahoma's Courtney Lane commits to USF as Bulls move back into top five
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The University of South Florida has re-entered the top five of 247Sports Composite Team Rankings with the commitment of five-star receiver Courtney Lane out of Chickasha, Oklahoma.

The second ranked prospect in the state of Oklahoma, Lane is a versatile athlete capable of playing both running back and receiver although the Bulls have exclusively recruited the five-foot-eleven, 213-pound prospect exclusively at receiver. He has more career carries than receptions in high school but Lane has shown on the 7-on-7 circuit that he shouldn't have any issues making the switch to receiver full time.

Lane picked USF over Notre Dame and Alabama, giving USF its ninth commitment of the cycle, seven of which are out of state.

USF Walks Off With a 38-21 Victory Over Florida State
USF running back Pookie Harrell has spent the past few weeks in the proverbial dog house. He ended Saturday night in the endzone.

Harrell's 87-yard touchdown on a screen pass with 1:46 left in the game was the nail in the coffin as USF was able to put away the Seminoles 38-21 on Saturday night to inch their way closer to yet another SEC East title.

The Seminoles mounted a slight comeback following Eric Walters' 52-yard touchdown pass from Roshawn Nichols made it a two possession game and even recovered the onside kick. However, the Florida State offense returned to their anemic ways and were forced to punt the ball following a three-and-out thanks to a B.J. Patton sack on third down.

Florida State amassed just 247 yards of total offense against the Bulls and if not for two red zone turnovers by USF quarterback Antonio Whitehead, the game could have gotten out of hand earlier than it did. FSU converted just three third downs on 12 attempts and reached the red zone just once.

Magee, Bulls offer first QB during stint in Texas' Brandon Wilson
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

It took nearly two full recruiting cycles but USF offensive coordinator Calvin Magee has tabbed his first QB target as OC of the Bulls.

Texas quarterback Brandon Wilson out of Lake Dallas High School in Corinth, Texas announced on social media that he's received a football scholarship from USF. Wilson is being recruited by UCLA, Wisconsin, Clemson and Michigan State among others but on a baseball scholarship. Wilson is considered a top prospect in baseball that could be drafted this spring and was previously committed to Clemson's baseball program.

The six-foot-two quarterback is a second-year starter at Lake Dallas and after throwing for less than 1,500 yards as a junior, his recruitment picked up during the summer with impressive performances in the 7-on-7 circuit and at camps, becoming the 17th ranked quarterback in his class.

Playoff system to be voted on by conference commissioners in coming weeks; could be implemented by 2031
Heather Watts -- ESPN.com Senior Writer

A four to eight team playoff for college football has been formally brought to a vote by a presidential oversight committee, a potentially dramatic change for the sport that could begin as early as next season. The teams will be chosen by a selection committee, the semifinals will be held at current bowl sites and the national championship game will be awarded to the highest bidder.

The vote is expected is to take place in the coming weeks in front of the ten conference commissioners and a board of 12 university presidents. The date and the site of the vote has not been decided but many within the industry expect the vote to be a unanimous decision to move away from the current BCS format.

The landscape of college football has changed dramatically in the last thirty years and even more so in the last decade with a series of conference realignments, including Notre Dame's decision to join the ACC as its sixteenth member and Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M (again) leaving the Big XII for the SEC.

The playoff discussions have been going on for years now and the recent conference switches, particularly Notre Dame abandoning its independent status, are an indication that the votes on the playoffs are a formality at this point. It's been discussed that a potential format would be that winners of the Power 5 conferences with current automatic bids to BCS bowls -- ACC, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-12 and SEC -- would carry those automatic bids into the eight-team playoff with the remaining three spot being awarded to at-large bids. Notre Dame, by joining the ACC, would now have the opportunity to earn either an automatic bid by winning the ACC or an at-large bid while as an Independent, it would only be eligible for an at-large bid as would all other Independent and Group of Five schools. Top G5 schools Army and Navy beat the Fighting Irish to it with Navy joining the ACC this season and Army set to join the Big Ten next season.

The other rumored format is one with just four automatic bids for the ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and the SEC following the Big XII's hemorrhaging of teams. Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M have already officially left with Oklahoma State, Missouri and Baylor all considering joining the Pac-12 who is expected to make a run at forming a sixteen-member conference to combat the Big Ten, ACC and SEC. While the Big 12 was first in embracing G5 teams when they added USF and UCF, it ultimately didn't help them as those teams bolted for greener pastures in the SEC and the ACC respectively.

The format, however, that is considered the favorite is a four to eight playoff format that is decided by a committee where teams are ranked, similar to the BCS format, and the top four or eight teams are chosen. This format is particularly fair in seasons like this current one where one conference, the Big Ten, has five teams currently in the top ten of the BCS rankings while the Big 12's highest ranked team is 8-2 Baylor at 20.

The Bulls Inch Past Florida 30-27
With a raining, wet Tampa as the backdrop to a sloppy, physical game, it was only right that it ended on a sack fumble with B.J. Patton's running mate Greg White getting the shine for once.

White stripped sack senior quarterback Nate Spurlock to put the nail in the coffin of the Florida Gators in their 30-27 loss to the University of South Florida on Saturday.

The Gators almost stole the SEC East division title from the grasp of the Bulls, picking off quarterback Antonio Whitehead four times, including twice in the redzone to tie the game at 20 apiece entering the fourth quarter.

The Bulls were able to fix their red zone woes on their next trip as Jeremiah McCullough broke through on a jet sweep and dove into the endzone on a seventeen yard touchdown to take the lead.

Florida, however, refused to go down quietly. The moxie senior quarterback led the Gators to yet another long drive, converting on fourth down to keep it alive and eventually get points on the board to tie the game.

Whitehead, ultimately, would get to make the curtain call. He led the Bulls to a 60+ yard drive in less than 33 seconds, connecting with his top three receivers to get USF in scoring position for Sheldon Davis' eventual 38-yard game winning field goal.

Spurlock would have a chance, albeit a small one, to respond with ten seconds left but following a minimal gain on the first play that also used their last timeout, Spurlock would be strip sacked to seal the victory for USF and a slot in the SEC Championship game.
