Bulls defense dominates Trojans as USF cruises to CFP National Championship
USF's defense was self-admittedly embarrassed after their outing against the Texas Longhorns, surrendering season highs in points, total yardage, passing yardage and first downs surrendered. As USC's first drive was going according to plan, it looked like the once feared unit was going to be exposed once more.
Chris Williams' interception helped keep USC off the board and Richie Cowan's interception on the next USC possession set the tone as the Bulls defense led the way to a 31-3 victory over the Trojans as USF advanced to the national championship game to play the winner of Tulsa vs. Texas.
Jeff Jones threw for 400 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 53 yards, throwing two touchdowns to Marques Iosefo and one apiece to Chris Wallace and Clayton Bradford. Wallace, the uber talented true freshman tight end, led the way with 140 yards to eclipse 1,000-yards receiving, becoming the first freshman tight end in Bulls history to accomplish that feat.

USF's Greer emerging as top candidate for Virginia Tech, Oregon State and Air Force openings
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist
USF offensive coordinator Mario Greer is expected to interview for the Virginia Tech head coaching job this week as the Bulls wrap up their preparations for the CFP National Championship.
Greer was promoted to offensive coordinator this season following Malcolm Francois Jr. departure to be the head coach at Kentucky and it's likely that Greer will be the next young OC to parlay one-year of calling plays at USF into a Power Five job. Greer is also expected to interview for openings at Oregon State and Air Force for their head coaching job as well.
Names to watch to replace Greer is recently fired Cincinnati head coach Clarence McKinney who runs a similar offense as Greer/Francois Jr. and is considered by many to be the top play caller on the market. Another names that run a similar offense include former Arizona State offensive coordinator Neal Brown and former N.C. State head coach Tony Levine.
Of course, this is all dependent on USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. returning as USF's head coach. If the Bulls were to move on from Francois Sr, Greer could potentially be one of the options to replace him in order to keep the recruiting class and current roster intact.

Run of the Bulls ‣ USF Football News
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer
‣ Senior WR Matthew Smith to miss National Championship game with turf toe injury
USF senior receiver Matthew Smith will miss the College Football Playoff National Championship after suffering a toe injury in the semi-finals win over USC.
Smith is second on the team with 79 catches for 942 yard and nine touchdowns, besting his career high totals from last season when he broke out onto the scene after being a sparingly used fullback/tight end his first two seasons at USF.
Smith's injury is augmented by the absence of receiver Robert Givens for the second half of the season whose been sidelined since injuring his knee. USF will need to rely even more on walk-on receivers Michael Arrington and Ryan Sullivan. Arrington has shown flashes this season with 18 receptions for 248 yards and four touchdowns but he's struggled with drops.
Sullivan hasn't played as much but does have two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown. USF has also used safety Clayton Bradford at receiver whose averaged 49.7 yards per game in games where he's started at receiver.
‣ Cronin embracing challenge after disappointing performance in first outing against Longhorns
USF senior cornerback Kevin Cronin had a tough day the last time he faced Texas' wide receivers, allowing several big catches as well as a touchdown. The senior captain isn't backing down from the rematch.
"I have to get my lick back," said Cronin during Media Day, "They're good players, really good and they beat us, no doubt about it, I got beat a bunch of times so we wanted to play them again and we get the opportunity to do so."
USF will have to find a way to deal with Texas' tall and explosive receivers. While USF has some really good corners in Cronin, Richie Cowan, Joe Jackson and Jeremy Daniels, they are all under six-feet tall and outside of Jackson, all under 176 pounds. Texas' starting receivers are listed at six-foot-four, six-foot-five and six-foot-two respectfully with arguably their best receiver, Utley, being 243 pounds.
‣ Milestones to watch in national championship
If senior running back Terrance Small has a big game and rushes for over 139 yards and sophomore quarterback Jeff Jones throw for at least 71 yards, USF would be the first team in college football history to have a 5,000-yard passer and two 1,000-yard rushers on a single team.
They could add on to that feat if sophomore receiver Marques Iosefo eclipses 1,000-yards receiving on the team, joining Chris Wallace as the other 1,000-yard receiver. If not for Smith's injury, he could also reach that feat as he currently has 942 yards on the season.
Another NCAA record will be on the line as Jones needs three touchdowns to match Colt Brennan's record for most passing touchdowns in a season with 58. Jones already broke the record last season for most passing yards with 5,988.
‣ Homecoming for several USF players as they travel to Arlington
USF landed in Arlington, Texas last week, the site of the national championship game which will most likely be a home game for the Longhorns.
It's also a home game for redshirt senior quarterback Brandon Wilson (Dallas), walk-on freshman receiver Charles Fisher (Carrollton), redshirt junior defensive end Adam Harvey (Kilgore), sophomore defensive tackle Ron Cox (Houston) and freshman defensive tackle Russ Bailey (San Antonio).
On the other side, Bay Area native Erik Hill from Clearwater spurred the hometown Bulls to go play for the Longhorns. The All-American center took home the Rimington and Outland trophy this award season. He allowed a sack in their last matchup against USF defensive tackle Dallas Thomas.
