ESPN announces the end of the College Football Playoffs era as ANAC finalizes format, championship
Jessica West -- SI.com
Georgia Tech will forever be known as the last College Football Playoffs champions.
ESPN announced on Friday that it will be discontinuing the College Football Playoffs, a move that was expected after the American National Athletic Conferences had released a graphic the previous week confirming the championship guidelines of the new league.
In three divisions (Champions, Contenders, Rising), the leagues will be split into two geographic regions each season in order to aid with travel costs. The winner of each region in the Champions Division will play in the National Championship Game, to be broadcasted on ESPN at the conclusion of the regular season. The Contenders and Rising Divisions will also play in a Divisional Championship.
The bottom four members of the Champions Division will be relegated into the Contenders Division and the top four members of the Contenders Division will replace them. The 11th seed of the Champions Division will play the Contenders 5th seed with the winner playing in the Champions Division the following season and the loser playing in the Contenders.
The 12th seed of the Champions Division will enter a four-team playoffs with the 6th, 7th and 8th seeds of the Contenders Division. The winner of the tournament will be promoted into the Champions Division.
The bottom eight of the Contenders Division will be demoted into the Rising Division and the top eight of the Rising Division will be promoted.
The ANAC also confirmed that it had reached agreements with the committees of the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl to have an exclusive partnership with each respective bowl. ANAC members that are not selected for these bowls will be eligible for other non-ANAC bowls where they would potentially compete with non-ANAC members.

Mustangs hire USF OC Doug Nussmeier as next head coach
Erik Smith -- Dallas Morning News Sports Columnist
The SMU Mustangs have hired USF offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier to be the program's next head coach.
Nussmeier spent the past two seasons as the play caller for one of college football's best offenses, leading the Bulls to two top-ten finishes in scoring offense and helped first-year starting quarterback Joey Spence throw for over 5,000 yards and fifty touchdowns this season.
He previously served as an assistant coach at Florida, Michigan, Alabama, Washington, Fresno State and Michigan State. Nussmeier has also previously served as quarterbacks coach for the St. Louis Rams, Ottawa Renegades and BC Lions.

Gibson transfers to UCF following breakout performance against the Buffs
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist
If you can beat them, join them?
Former USF running back Jason Gibson has announced that he will be transferring to the University of Central Florida for his senior season after entering the transfer portal earlier this month.
Gibson, a local star running back for Tampa Tech back in high school, rushed for 99 yards in the Fiesta Bowl win over Colorado and had two total touchdowns. The Tampa native took official visits to Navy, Colorado, Miami, Florida and Florida State before deciding on UCF despite not taking an official visit with the Knights.
UCF is losing its top two rushers from last season in Ryan Patrick and Brian McCall.

Former OC Wells announces retirement as potential OC candidates come off the board
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
New Mexico head coach Walt Wells has stepped down from his position with the Lobos after announcing his retirement at the age of 69.
Wells has served two stints as offensive coordinator for the Bulls and was among those considered to be the favorites to replace Doug Nussmeier's as USF's next offensive coordinator.
The veteran head coach joins Major Applewhite and Buster Faulkner as potential names that have come off the hiring board for USF with Applewhite accepting the head coaching job at Northern Illinois and Faulkner leaving Navy to be the head coach at South Carolina.
The logical option and fan favorite is Malcolm Francois Jr. although those close to Francois Sr. and Francois Jr. tell the Tampa Bay Chronicles that a reunion at this time is not likely as Francois Jr. remains a top candidate for openings at USC and Navy.

Bulls replace OC Nussmeier with Jeremy Butler
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer
The University of South Florida has hired former TCU head coach Jeremy Butler to be its next offensive coordinator.
USF interviewed Butler and Coastal Carolina offensive coordinator Lawrence Dawsey before deciding to go with the veteran head coach. The Bulls have twice interviewed Butler for the position in recent years, once to replace Malcolm Francois Jr. three years ago and once more two season ago to replace Mario Greer. Both times, Butler accepted other opportunities, most recently the TCU head coaching job.
Butler has also been a head coach at UCLA before being replaced by a former USF offensive coordinator in Marcel Smith.
A former Middle Tennessee State quarterback, Butler typically runs a spread offense similar to the Urban Meyer spread offense of the 00s and 10s. Butler coached under Greg Brandon, who had previously been an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Bowling Green under head coach Urban Meyer before Meyer left for the University of Utah in 2003.
Running backs coach Anthony Clark was hired by New Mexico as offensive coordinator and replaced by former USF running back Richard Miller.

Anderson, Beck, Daniels and Jackson declare for draft as Wallace returns
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer
Twenty percent from the field isn't great but when it nets you someone as talented as Chris Wallace, you take it.
Underclassmen Josh Anderson, Kevin Beck, Jeremy Daniels and Bobby Jackson have all declared for the draft but Wallace, the two-time Mackey Award winner, confirmed via social media that he will not be joining his former teammates.
The foursome of players join Jason Gibson and Brady Johnson as early departures from a squad that almost made it to the College Football Playoffs. Gibson is transferring to rival UCF while Johnson is heading to play for Ole Miss.
