Bulls bolster linebacker room with transfer portal additions
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
Two South Florida natives in former Auburn linebacker Alex McDaniel and former UAB linebacker Corey Caldwell are returning back to their home state and transferring to the University of South Florida.
McDaniel, a four-star recruit out of Fort Lauderdale, last just one season with the Tigers before deciding to return home. Caldwell, originally from Palm Beach County, was high school teammates with incoming freshman running back William Sapp. Caldwell spent two seasons with UAB, redshirting his first season and served as a backup in 2036.
The additions bolster the depth of a linebacking room that had three players transfer out last spring and is losing two starters in Josh Anderson to the draft and Stephen Dixon to graduation. Per university guidelines, Caldwell and McDaniel will redshirt this season but McDaniel figures to be a potential starter in 2038.

Potential bleak NSD on the horizon as UCF Crystal Balls roll in for Charlie Cooke
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
USF got off to a great start during this recruiting cycle despite their scholarship sanctions, landing a four-star safety in Joey Bailey early in the process followed by a five-star commit in running back William Sapp, two legacy prospects that served as a beacon for the class.
Since then, they've continued to add top end talent in cornerback Julius Hughes, another five-star running back in Eric Valentine and four-star defensive end Cory Smith who could be an instant impact player. However, it's been a dry few months for the Bulls and it doesn't appear to be getting better as February approaches.
UCF has emerged as the new favorite to land five-star quarterback Charlie Cooke over Alabama and USF. It was once considered a USF/Alabama race with Florida State, not UCF, seen as the third place team. Since visiting the Knights last fall, the Crystal Balls continue to favor UCF as Cooke could potentially walk right into early playing time as soon as his true freshman season.
USF also appears to be losing ground on five-star guard Trumaine Williams and linebacker Dominic Walker out of IMG Academy. USC is the favorite for Williams and Alabama for Walker who was once considered a potential lock for USF.
The names that are most likely in play for Signing Day include tight end Maurice McIntyre, offensive tackle Kyle Everett, center Matt Callahan, and cornerback Vincent Pettway.

Young eyes for potential 1K/1K season in new offense
Sean Caesar -- The Athletic Writer
USF junior receiver Derek Young enrolled at USF with the expectations that he'd be a running back. It's the position he primarily played coming out of high school along with some receiver. By the end of spring practices, Young was the team's starting receiver, a position he's held since then.
New USF offensive coordinator Jeremy Butler has Young thinking differently.
"I'm going to be all over the field," says Young of his initial conversations with Butler about his role in the new offense, "I did a lot of that in high school so I'm used to it, I'm able to do different things. I definitely want to rush for over 1,000 and [catch] that too."
In two seasons at USF, Young has already shown his versatility. He played almost exclusively on the outside as a true freshman, catching 62 balls for 804 yards and ten touchdowns. As a sophomore, he moved inside to the slot to accommodate for incoming five-star receiver Maurice Bennett whose an outside receiver. When Bennett got hurt, Young moved on the outside and continued to be productive. All in all, he caught 58 passes in 2036 for 1,013 yards and eight touchdowns.
He had eight carries in 2035 but none last season, a number that's sure to increase next season.

The replacements: top players to watch during USF's spring practices
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
USF was one incompletion away from being in the College Football Playoffs and potentially winning their sixth national championship. An inaugural member of the Champions Division, they figure to be in the hunt for the National Championship once more but have plenty of talent to replace.
Here are the top players to watch throughout spring as they look to replace key departures:
- CBs Jeremy Daniels (draft) and Kevin Collins (graduation)
USF's most productive corner last season was Kenny Fowler, who took home the Nagurski Trophy as one of college football's best defensive players, but he wasn't among their top two corners, not on the depth chart.
The honor belonged to Daniels and Collins who are no longer here. Tyler Matthews is a name to watch as he'll likely be a starter opposite of Fowler at corner but a name to watch is incoming true freshman and early enrollee Julius Hughes. If Hughes can be a top performer in the spring, he could potentially compete for one of those starting corner spots and also allow Fowler to remain in the slot in sub packages.
- - EDGE Kevin Beck (draft)
Beck went from underperformer to All-SEC by ramping up his play in the second half of the season, finishing the year with 23 tackles for loss and four sacks before declaring for the draft as a fourth-year junior.
USF returns Travis Peters as one of it's edge rushers but who will be opposite of him? There's redshirt junior Jordan Odom with three career tackles in three years and second year player David Richardson who was a top recruit coming out of high school but didn't play last season.
- - LT Tony Kelly (draft)
Unlike the previous positions, we know whose going to replace Kelly at left tackle and its Dave Riley, the redshirt senior who played in Kelly's place during the second half of the Fiesta Bowl as the team opted to rest Kelly.
Riley doesn't have a ton of experience and he'll likely need to fight off Brandon Jones to official be the starter but it's his job to lose.
- - Interior DL John Allen (graduation), Matt Bush (graduation), Ron Cox (graduation), Dallas Thomas (graduation)
USF fans have been spoiled with their interior defensive line play for the past few seasons as Allen, Bush, Cox and Thomas have been part of a very productive and reliable rotation.
They're gone now and in their place is going to be senior Russ Bailey (9 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks) and third-year player Michael Williams who hasn't played much since arriving at USF. Both are undersized defensive tackles in the 280-pound range, leaving USF without the big bodies up front that they've had in recent seasons.
There are also depth concerns with just two scholarship defensive tackles on the roster.

Cooke spurns Alabama, UCF for USF as Bulls land top-ten class despite restrictions
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Five-star quarterback Charlie Cooke showed up to NSD wearing a crimson suit, initially picked up a UCF hat only to toss it for a USF hat which would prove to be his selection as the top ranked quarterback in the 2037 class picked the Bulls over hometown Alabama and UCF, who was the Crystal Ball favorite heading into the decision.
USF also got NLIs from four-star offensive tackle Kyle Everett, four-star defensive tackle Will Webb, cornerbacks Cody Fuller and Fred Rankin. Top targets TE Maurice McIntyre ended up at Clemson, it was USC for five-star guard Trumaine Williams and three-star corner Vincent Pettway, Ole Miss for Tampa native Matt Callahan and Alabama for five-star linebacker Dominic Walker.
Cooke has a very similar playing style and build to current USF quarterback Joey Spence with Spence being a bit taller and Cooke thicker in the lower body. They both push the ball down the field and have incredible arm talent. With the signing of Cooke, USF has now landed the top ranked quarterback in two of the last three cycles.
USF was also able to get Cooke a potential left tackle in Everett, beating out Miami for his signature. He's built more like a right tackle at six-foot-four and 304 pounds but Everett has traditionally played on the left side and is a good enough athlete to potentially stay there.
Late additions to the class were Webb, Fuller and Rankin who got offers from USF in the past few weeks. Webb has a build that can continue to add weight and be a potential nose tackle at the next level. His four-star ranking might be a bit of a reach by the recruiting industry but the raw skills are there for Webb to be a potential starter at the next level.
Fuller and Rankin are two out of state corners that have interesting physical traits, especially Fuller at six-foot-four. The lack of elite top end speed is a concern for both as USF loses playing man, Cover 3 and quarters coverage which requires their corners to be able to away a portion of the field by themselves with their range.

USF junior QB, Heisman hopeful Spence stars in USF Spring Game
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist
Even on a relatively quiet day in which the offense kept its playbook simple, USF starting quarterback Joey Spence still looked as polished as ever, completing 85 percent of his passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns during USF's spring game on Saturday.
USF fans got a first look at new offensive coordinator Jeremy Butler. While the offense kept it plain, it was notable that Spence went under center just twice during the six drives that he orchestrated and overall, the offense had more of a spread feel to it than under former OC Doug Nussmeier.
Two of Spence's touchdowns went to Maurice Bennett who is fully healthy after missing most of the second half of the last season with a chest injury. While his reported weight hasn't changed much since his true freshman season, Bennett looked stronger and more explosive. He was by far the best receiver of the day followed by Sam Washington who had a couple of nice snags.
Second-year receivers D.J. Manning and Brian Harris were also uber productive on the second team offense but did get to up against the second-team defense which featured first-year corners.
It was a tough day for the interior of the offensive line with guard Chris Booker struggling against defensive tackle Russ Bailey who perhaps had the best day on defense. He had five quarterback pressures and two plays that were blown dead when he got around Spence. The other standout on defense was Kenny Fowler who forced all three incompletions of the day from Spence.
Juniors tight end Chris Wallace and receiver Derek Young only played in the first drive before sitting out the rest of the game. It was a scheduled off-day for both players according to head coach Malcolm Francois Sr.
