Just read through the last season and really enjoyed it. I lost interest in college football a few years ago but promotion/relegation would definitely bring me back into it.

Great idea to go with conferences to do it. That’s an interesting twist I have not heard or seen before. Really enjoyable follow.

Glad y'all like the new conference format, sucks that Ohio State is already demoted because talent wise they're typically a pretty tough matchup. It'll be interesting to see who of the non-original 16 end up becoming a powerhouse and a mainstay and who of the original 16 end up never making it back (probably michigan)

USF's Prince and Butler to interview with Michigan, Ohio State
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

Ohio State University and the University of Michigan have formally requested to interview University of South Florida offensive coordinator Jeremy Butler and defensive coordinator Gary Prince for their respective head coach openings.

Prince is a long-time assistant with the Bulls after being part of the inaugural recruiting class under head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. The former defensive lineman was promoted to defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, leading USF's defense to a top ten finish in scoring defense during both seasons.

Prince and Butler have already interviewed with Georgia and Nebraska as they continue to be one of the hottest names on the board. According to those close to the program, the expectations internally is for Prince to land one of these openings and move on while its unclear if Butler will do the same.

Butler has been a head coach at both TCU and UCLA where he was fired at both stops due to being unable to string together successful seasons, compiling a 26-37 record in his five seasons as a head coach.

An early name for Bulls fans to keep an eye on as a replacement at defensive coordinator is former USF DC Pat Fitzgerald who was recently fired by Oklahoma State following a 3-9 season. Following his dismissal, Fitzgerald was spotted at a Bulls practice as they got ready for USC. Fitzgerald and Francois Sr. have remained close since Fitzgerald took over the head coaching job at SMU back in 2030.

Bulls extend Francois Sr. as coordinators Prince and Butler accept head coaching opportunities
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

The University of South Florida and head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. have agreed to an extension to keep the head coach through 2041 and raise his base salary to $20 million annually, extending his lead as the highest paid coach in college football.

The extension comes on the heel of defensive coordinator Gary Prince agreeing to become West Virginia's head coach and Charlotte hiring Jeremy Butler to be their head coach following William Jackson's hiring at Syracuse, a job that Butler interviewed for.

Francois Sr. had signed a seven-year extension at the end of the 2033 season. With both coordinators gone, USF was quick to rework Francois Sr's deal, adding one more year and raising his salary in order to keep any potential suitors away. While he never interviewed with Ohio State, it was rumored that the Buckeyes were ready to make Francois Sr a $20 million per year offer.

He'll be tasked once more to rebuild a roster and a coaching staff that after winning a national championship will need to be reloaded and reworked. Recently fired and former USF defensive coordinator Pat Fitzgerald makes a lot of sense at defensive coordinator as Francois Sr. and Fitzgerald have remained close over the years with Fitzgerald even serving as an extra set of eyes during preparation for the national championship game. Unless the veteran defensive coach is able to land another head coaching job, it's likely that he'll be back.

The picture is a bit unclear at offensive coordinator as USF is expected to undergo a full coaching search although internally, there have been some rumblings that Francois Sr. himself could take over the play calling, something he considered doing last season prior to the hiring of Butler. A name to watch there might be Virginia Tech's Mike Norvell or Notre Dame's Antoine Smith, the long time North Carolina head coach who has been with the Fighting Irish as their play caller the past few seasons.

Navy offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr, Francois Sr's son and a former assistant on his staff, isn't expected to interview for the job.

Bulls finalize staff with additions of Martinez and Nicholson as coordinators
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

The University of South Florida has hired former Troy head coach Trai Martinez to be the team's new defensive coordinator and Peter Nicholson to be their offensive coordinator.

USF interviewed three candidates in Manny Diaz, Pat Fitzgerald and Martinez for the position with Diaz and Fitzgerald having previously served on the staff. Fitzgerald was the runaway favorite to land the job but USF surprisingly went with an outsider in Martinez who went 3-9 at Troy in his final season.

Martinez led the Trojans to a 11-2 record in 2032 and won nine games the following season but they struggled since that time period, leading to his firing with the defense allowing 32.2 points per game last season. Martinez traditionally runs a 3-4 defense which the Bulls haven't ran as their base set since 2028 under Justin Wilcox but they did have some 3-4 looks during short yardage situations under former USF defensive coordinator Gary Prince last season.

The Bulls also lost a top assistant in linebackers coach Philip Humphrey who accepted the defensive coordinator job at South Alabama. Humphrey was the third longest tenured staff member having been on the staff for the past ten seasons.

Nicholson's last stop was as Charlotte's offensive coordinator and wasn't retained by new head coach Jeremy Butler, who he is ironically replacing at USF. Nicholson was a quarterbacks coach at Iowa State for a few years before becoming the offensive coordinator at Charlotte under head coach William Jackson. The 49ers went 8-5 this past season, their highest win total since 2022.

A long time assistant under Mike Bajakian, Nicholson is from the Rich Rodriguez tree with Bajakian having worked with Butch Jones who was an assistant for Rodriguez and his offense has a lot of similarities to Rodriguez' back in the 2010s with a lot of spread option principles. Under Nicholson, Charlotte's offense averaged 36 points per game and finished 1st in the AAC in points per game with senior quarterback Tye Pittman throwing for 37 touchdowns and rushing for an additional nine.

2038 USF Coaching Staff
Head Coach/WR Coach: Malcolm Francois (26th year)
Associate Head Coach/OL Coach: Jim Michalczik (11th year)
Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach: Peter Nicholson (1st year)
Defensive Coordinator/Linebacker Coach: Trai Martinez (1st year)
Defensive Line Coach: Taylor Fletcher (1st yr in role, 7th with program)
Cornerbacks Coach: Ray Hill (3rd yr in role, 7th with program)
Special Teams Coordinator/Tight Ends Coach: Shelton Kent (4th year)
RB Coach: Richard Miller (2nd year)
Safeties Coach: Ty Maddox (3rd yr in role, 5th with program)
Nickels Coach: Derrick Brown (3rd yr in role, 4th with program)

Sophomore receiver Brian Harris had also entered the transfer portal after the national championship game before landing with Tennessee, who was promoted into the Champions Division and will likely be an opponent in 2038.

This is in addition to USF losing college football's all time leading receiver Chris Wallace as a graduating senior.
