Taylor Smith ready to be next great USF tight end with commitment to USF
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
When South Carolina native Taylor Smith transferred to IMG Academy for his junior season, the coaching staff asked him to watch tape on former USF tight end Chris Wallace, who spent two seasons at IMG, in order to improve as a pass catcher.
Smith caught a career high six touchdown passes as a junior on his way to becoming the eight ranked tight end in his recruiting class and he hopes to keep following in Wallace's footsteps by committing to the University of South Florida over Ole Miss, Stanford, and Kansas State.
"There really wasn't a second or third place," Smith told the media at his announcement when asked about how finished second behind USF, "They were one through five, really, I never saw myself playing anywhere else."
Originally from Barnwell, Smith plays a physical style of football that will endear him with tight end coach Buck Burns and offensive line coach Jim Michalczik. USF signed another talented tight end last cycle in Jeff Rutledge whose blocking has gotten him on the field. Rutledge is a better athlete than Smith but they are similar players that are in-line tight ends that can contribute early as a blocker while they develop their abilities as receivers. Rutledge has a bit more upside to be a more complete tight end down the line as it'll be a steeper curve for Smith but the potential is definitely there.

USF dodges a bullet on the road, escaping Norman with a 17-16 win against the Sooners
In the only game that David Russ started and finished this season, he threw for 426 yards and three touchdowns in the season opener loss to Michigan.
After missing the last six games, Russ looked far from his usual self outside of a long coverage bust by USF, completing just fifty percent of his passes for 121 yards, missing out on the chance to catch USF's offense sleeping in the 17-16 loss to the Bulls on Saturday afternoon.
The Sooners had several chances to get the upset win with USF turning the ball over in the second half on a muffed punt, failing to convert on fourth down which gave the Sooners possession on the Bulls side of the field and in the fourth quarter, the Sooners had three different chances to win the game with a touchdown and eventually a field goal with three minutes remaining but never sealed the deal.
It wasn't a banner day for quarterback Jet Millines either who threw his ninth interception of the season and fumbled twice, including on the second to last drive which went out of bounds in the Bulls own territory on third down. He did rush for 45 yards, including a 35-yarder on the first drive of the third quarter to setup the nine-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Bennett.

Bulls dip their toe in The Buckeye State to snatch the nation's top corner in Charlie Robinson
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
USF doesn't spend a ton of time recruiting in the Midwest but when they do decide to head up north, it's typically for elite talent in the likes of Jason McDowell in recent years. They did it earlier this cycle with Ohio's Jake Thompson and struck gold once more in the Buckeye State, landing a commitment from the nation's top corner in Charlie Robinson.
Robinson announced on Friday his commitment to USF over Indiana, Purdue, Miami and Texas. The six-foot-four corner is a man among boys at the high school level, playing excelling at multiple positions for the Magic.
Any concerns about Robinson's level of competition were quieted over the past two summers as he continued to dominate the 7-on-7 circuit, playing for The Super Gremlins, a Tampa-based 7-on-7 squad that is ran by former Bulls tight end Jean-Jacques Francois who is the son of USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. With those connections, it was always going to be an uphill climb for a team to pull Robinson away from the Bulls as the next elite corner to come through the pipeline.
As a prospect, there's a case to be made that Robinson should be a five-star as he ran a 4.4 on the lasers this past summer to put away any doubts of him lacking the top end speed at six-foot-four to play corner at the highest level. He's plenty fluid, especially for his height, and shows high football IQ with the ability to play multiple positions on the backend whether at the boundary, at safety or even in the slot.
The only knock against Robinson is his slight frame as some coaches believe he's closer to being in the 160-pound range than his listed 176. He does look very slight in person and he doesn't play with much physicality in the run game.
At six-foot-four, Robinson is one of the taller corners that USF has signed in recent years as they've typically gone after smaller, shiftier guys that can handle their own on an island. Cody Fuller was a walk-on at six-foot-four who played a ton as a freshman but hasn't played much since due to him being a little bit stiff as a bigger guy.
Robinson doesn't have that issue so a better comp for him might be Ronnie Gay who is a bit of a blast from the past as a three-year starter for the Bulls back in the 2020s, turning into an All-American as a three-star prospect.

247 Sports' top recruit, Carl Graham, confirms official visit dates and locks in a commitment date
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Five-star athlete Carl Graham has told 247Sports.com that he will be taking official visits this weekend to UNLV and an official visit to USF the following weekend and is currently scheduled to announce his commitment three weeks from today on November 11th.
"It's just been a crazy year for me so I really want to wrap up my commitment and focus on winning my team a state title," Graham told 247 Sports' Cooper Tucker.
The nation's top prospect according to both 247 Sports ranking and the industry composite, the Arizona native is playing out his senior season at Bergen Catholic in New Jersey due to an undisclosed personal matter.
Purdue, Michigan, Ole Miss and Michigan State all got him on campus this past summer for unofficial visits but its USF that remains the lead with UNLV being a surprise addition in recent months. Graham's cousin is UNLV senior running back Duane Sears who is averaging 100.4 yards per game this season for the Rebels. The Rebels also signed close friend and former teammate Nick Fitzpatrick last year as a three-star defensive end.
While the Bulls are widely considered the favorites for Graham's commitment, close bonds have already cost the Bulls a recruiting battle on the trail this cycle. In a recent interview, five-star offensive tackle Brian Smith Jr. detailed how USF's recruitment -- or lack thereof -- of teammate and best friend Scott Neal [247 Sports HB #18] led to him signing with Southern Miss in a surprise commitment.
"It wasn't like a package deal or anything," Smith Jr. told On3 of his and Neal's surprise commitment to the Golden Eagles, "But we're humans at the end of the day, [Neal is] my boy. We'd be taking these trips to [USF] and they weren't paying him any attention, not talking to him. He ain't no scrub, he's a 1,000-yard rusher in each season he played at so it just rubbed me the wrong way the way they treated a really good player out of their own backyard. You can't be all about the crib and keeping all this talent in-state and then ignore that."
It'll be an interesting to see if familial ties also play into five-star running back Jacob Wheeler's commitment. Wheeler's twin brother, Jay, committed to Washington State, a school that isn't listed in Wheeler's latest top three which includes USF, Georgia and Miami. Had USF offered the three-star running back, would they be in a better position to close the deal with his five-star brother?

Bulls come up short in 48-45 shootout loss to unranked Tennessee at home
A two-win Tennessee team at that time took undefeated USF to the brink, losing to the eventual champions by just two points after being outscored in the second half.
It was now the Volunteers turn to put together the second half comeback.
Despite USF's offense coming to life with quarterback Jacob Venckus replacing Jet Millines in the second half to the tune of three touchdown passes, Venckus would leave the game with a concussion, paving the way for the Volunteers to complete the upset 48-45 win over the Bulls.
Venckus replaced Millines on USF's third drive of the third quarter after Millines had thrown an interception and went three-and-out on the next drive which allowed the Volunteers to score ten unanswered points to open up the second half. With the score 21-17, Venckus completed the first four passes of his career including the thirteen-yard connection to Joseph Moses to extend the lead back to two possessions.
"We felt it was the right time to give Jacob [Venckus] an opportunity," USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. said after the game, stating it was a decision made in collaboration with offensive coordinator DeMarcus Bennett but ultimately his.
Alvin Holley and the Vols offense took no time to respond, scoring in two plays to cut back into it. The offenses continued to trade as the third quarter ended with Venckus throwing an eleven yard touchdown passes to Brooks Coe and Holley responding with a 46-yard strike to tight end Shelton Horne to make it 35-31.
With his best non-scoring drive of the game to start the fourth quarter, Venckus and the Bulls offense gave the Volunteers a crevasse and they took it, taking the lead with Holley's fourth touchdown of the day with 7:21 remaining.
The Bulls would take the lead with a beautiful lofted pass to Maurice Bennett from Venckus but the lead would be short lived as Chad Smith ripped off a 49-yard just a few seconds later to take the lead with 4:28 left in the game.
Millines would re-enter the game on the next drive as Venckus left with a head injury, later declared a concussion by Francois Sr. On his first pass, Millines completed it to Bennett to make it 4th and inches with less than three minutes which the Bulls would convert on a handoff to William Sapp. But on 3rd and 7, Millines' accuracy issue would arise once more, failing to complete the pass to an open Bennett who finished the game with 13 receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
After the field goal, the game seemed destined for overtime, especially with third and nine looming with 31 seconds left in the game and the ball on Tennessee's 26-yard line but a 29-yard completion to Horne gave them life. Holley then completed back to back passes of twelve and fourteen yards to set up the 36-yard game winning field goal.
