Five-star Fort Myers running back Justin Thomas ends recruitment with commitment to USF
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

After weeks of speculation, rumors and Crystal Balls flipping, five-star running back Justin Thomas has committed to the South Florida Bulls over Ohio State, South Carolina, Virginia and LSU.

The nation's top prospect, Thomas was originally scheduled to visit Ohio State next weekend but dropped the surprise commitment on Sunday night, cancelling his visits to both Ohio State and LSU.

Since his official visit a few weeks ago, USF had been picking up steam in terms of Crystal Balls in their favor for the Fort Myers product with some buzz that he could potentially commit during his visit. When Thomas didn't, some recruiting insiders wondered if Ohio State -- the long time favorites -- would end up being the pick following his visit.

USF running back's coach Anthony Montgomery kept up the pressure and was able to land the commitment and keep Thomas from ever officially visiting Ohio State. Montgomery took over for Richard Miller at the end of the 2040 recruiting cycle and helped close the deal with five-star running back Jacob Wheeler but this is Montgomery's first commitment and it's a major win over a top program like Ohio State.

From an evaluation standpoint, there's a lot to like about Thomas who has drawn comparisons to Kellen Wright and Wheeler, USF's top two running backs for the past two seasons, and another former Lee County five-star running back and USF great, Bobby Jackson. Thomas is one of the fastest players in the state and has consistently shown the ability to make defenders miss with his agility and elusiveness. He'll likely be a factor in the return game and has improved as a pass catcher over the years.

While all four have similar listed heights and weights, on tape and in person, Thomas seems thinner than all three and would be very much surprised if his official weight at USF is near the 180-pound that he is listed at as he's probably closer to the 160s. There are questions about his frame and if he can ever be an every down player at the next level or if he is more of an elite gadget player that gets ten to fifteen touches in a game in a variety of ways.

If Thomas ends up signing with USF, he'll be the third top running back that the Bulls have landed, joining E.J. Thomas (Albany, Georgia) and Wheeler (Tampa, Florida). Derek Young was listed as an athlete in recruiting rankings and played running back and receiver at USF.

Where USF stands with top targets as Early National Signing Day approaches
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The early signing period is just two weeks away with plenty of big names left on the board for the USF Bulls who already have three five-stars committed and the nation's number two recruiting class after the Oklahoma Sooners, with twenty commitments and more than half of them being rated three stars or below, jumping to number one.

The Bulls, with just twelve commits, have a good chance at landing the nation's top class by the time the cycle is over and might even do it prior to the beginning of the dead period which begins December 1st and runs through the second week of January.

Beginning with receivers, USF is in a really good spot with Joshua Butler, the nation's top receiver where a commitment could come at any moment now. The former Georgia commit reclassified into the 2042 cycle and then immediately decommitted from the Bulldogs and since then, USF has been the Crystal Ball leaders.

Butler's reclassifying and likely commitment has impacted the recruitment of Frank Paris. Paris views himself as an outside receiver and was recruited as such by the Bulls prior to the recruitment of Butler but have since been pitching Paris the idea of being a big slot, similar to Joseph Moses. It's unclear how receptive Paris is to that idea and with visits coming up to Stanford and Utah, this could pave the way for some negative recruiting by those staffs. Stanford is picking up a lot of buzz in this recruitment and could end up being the pick.

Another West Coast team to watch is USC and their recruitment of Nick Ryan. Similar to Justin Thomas, USF has been pushing hard to land a commitment from Ryan and stop him from visiting Miami and the Trojans but it does appear that Ryan intends on taking those visits. The nation's top interior linemen, it's likely going to be a tough battle for the Bulls, potentially into February.

On Ryan's visit to USC will be another top guard prospect that the Bulls are after in Kyle Walton. Walton has visited Texas, Boston College and the Bulls with the Longhorns being the Crystal Ball leader. USF is in much better standing with Nick Ryan than Walton who has been a USC lean for a while and with the Trojans getting the last visit, the writing seems to be on the wall there.

Staying along the offensive line, USF is trying to fend off Miami and Oregon for the top ranked center prospect in the class, Jasper Nobles. Nobles, who visited USF during the Stanford game, has taken visits to Miami and Alabama with trips to Ohio State and Oregon scheduled. Oregon is the Crystal Ball leader there as Nobles will likely be a day one starter for the Ducks whose offensive line is in tatters. The Bulls ironically play the Ducks this week and while it might bode well for their chances to win on Saturday, that very issue is why Nobles is likely headed there.

Sticking with the offensive line, the last target on the board there is the team's potential right tackle of the future in Sam Jefferson, the four-star Georgia product. He's taking an official visit to Georgia this week but it's his trip to Gainesville next week that is the concern there as it is a USF, Alabama and Florida battle for the most part with Georgia Tech also getting a visit but not a real contender. USF wants to land at least one elite prospect on that offensive line and Jefferson is probably their safest bet there.

The last two top targets left are safety Mike Mason and quarterback Chris Price, both four stars. With Price, it is likely going to drag into February as he wants to wait to see the coaching staff that's going to be in place there with Rhett Lashlee's potential departure to be a head coach. For Mason, it's a USF vs. UCF battle which should be a fun one with Mason taking his official visit to UCF for the USF game. The Bulls don't lose a ton of recruiting battles to the Knights and this is one they are keen on winning.

#3 USF (8-2, 6-2) | 7 | 24 | 0 | 14 || 45
ORE (3-7, 3-6) | 0 | 13 | 10 | 0 || 23

Oregon puts up a fight but ultimately no match for USF as Ducks playoff hopes are shut
USF was comfortably leading Oregon and then they weren't and then they were, for good.

The Ducks put up a valiant effort, rallying from a twenty-one point deficit to make it a seven point game in the second half but ultimately, USF's offense came back online with it's running game to beat Oregon 45-23 on Saturday afternoon to move a step closer to qualifying for the playoffs.

The game took a turn shortly after USF quarterback Mark Cunningham left the game in the second quarter to enter the concussion protocol and did not come back. Cunningham had completed all eleven of his pass attempts for 139 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Rashard Woodard then led two scoring drive of his own, throwing a touchdown to Tracy Brooks with 20 seconds left to extend the lead to three scores.

The rally for the Duck started there with Edgar Pitts leading Oregon down the field thanks to a 47-yard pass to Marcel Carrington to setup the 33-yard field goal right before the half.

"I think that drive helped kickstart our offense and gave us a lot of energy heading into the half," added Oregon offensive coordinator Kyle Roland.

Oregon, who could have catapulted themselves back into contention for the fourth seed with a win, dominated the third quarter, intercepting Woodard who briefly left the game with a shoulder injury and then capitalized on a botched option play by third string quarterback Jacob Venckus to score ten unanswered points in the third. Former five-star prospect and Florida native Patrick Sullivan ripped off a 42-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to make it a seven-point game.

Sullivan finished with 209 yards rushing and two touchdowns, playing against many of his former teammates at IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fl.), including USF linebacker Kyle Locher.

The Bulls defense didn't stay dormant long and with the ball on the 31-yard line on 4th and 1 to begin the fourth, the Ducks opted to go for it and were stopped as Locher and Fred Rankin penetrated through the Ducks offensive line to make the stop.

With momentum back on their side, Woodard left his first scoring drive of the second half with Brooks Coe being on the receiving end of the twelve yard touchdown. The Ducks then went three-and-out, giving USF the ball back and the chance to bleed out the clock, which they did before Kellen Wright's ten-yard touchdown run put the game away for good.

Top 100 prospect Mike Mason cancels visit to rival UCF, commits to Bulls
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. might be in his sixties but his fastball is still just as good as ever, both on the football field as the Bulls are making another run for a national championship and on the recruiting trail where Francois Sr. and his staff have pulled another big get.

The Bulls were able to land a commitment from hard-hitting safety Mike Mason who was set to visit UCF this weekend. The Knights aren't going to get an official visit after all with former USF offensive coordinator and current UCF head coach DeMarcus Bennett learning what its like to go head-to-head with the Bulls for a top player, especially in-state.

The second ranked free safety in the class, Mason will join a talented safety room that already includes former five-star true freshman Clarence Sullivan and four-star true freshman Julian Harrell. Both players have played a ton this season as part of the safety rotation along with seniors Fred Rankin and Joel McDonald. With Rankin and McDonald set to graduate, there will be plenty of opportunity for Mason to slide into that rotation along with redshirt sophomore Anthony Gunn, another talented player.

While Mason isn't the elite athlete that Sullivan is, there are some comparisons to their game and athletic profile as bigger safeties that move well for their size. Mason is an extremely well rounded player that projects more as a box safety at the next level with his ability to tackle in space and is decent enough in coverage to cover most slot receivers or tight ends.

A move to linebacker is not out of the question for Mason whose testing numbers are pretty similar to Kyle Locher's coming out of high school. Locher made the switch to linebacker last season and has been one of college football's best players since. The Bulls recruited him as a safety and while Damon Hill is likely the next guy at inside linebacker, there isn't a ton of high quality depth behind him, creating an opportunity for Mason to play right away.

With the commitment, the Bulls have now landed two of the top ten players in the state with Justin Thomas as the top player. They're also in on Jasper Nobles and Kyle Walton, the state's third and fourth ranked player.

Bulls stop rivals UCF as they show no mercy as they run up the score
USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. came out in support of UCF's hiring of then USF offensive coordinator DeMarcus Bennett to be the team's next head coach following Roger McCoy's departure to Georgia Tech. The Knights were coming off a ten-win season in the Rising Division and Francois Sr. stated that he believed Bennett to be the right hire to get them in the Champions Division for the first time in program history.

Bennett might ultimately do that but on Friday night, he got a taste of what the Champions Division entails and it was a bitter pill to swallow as the Bulls completely trashed the Knights 52-3 in a lopsided performance.

Heisman hopeful Charlie Cooke had no answers for UCF's defense, throwing three interceptions to sophomore Charlie Robinson, including one in the end zone when the Knights had a chance to make it a one possession game in the second quarter. Marcellus Smith sacked Cooke, the former USF transfer, twice while Kyle Locher stripped Brandon Bryant of the ball.

Mark Cunningham overcame an early interception to throw for 301 yards and three touchdowns, rushing for another one. The Bulls running attack got off to a slow start but eventually caught fire with Kellen Wright scoring on a 51-yard touchdown to break the 100-yard mark while Jacob Wheeler rushed for 95 yards and a score.

Ducks get revenge on Bulls, land top center prospect Jasper Nobles right from Bulls territory
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Two weeks after losing to the USF Bulls on the football field, the Oregon Ducks were able to claim a victory on the recruiting trail with Tampa Catholic center Jasper Nobles committing to the Ducks over hometown USF, Miami, Ohio State and Boston College.

The nation's top rated center, Nobles figures to be a potential day one starter for the Ducks who have had issues along their offensive line all season. Nobles was in Eugene for his official decision when he pulled the trigger, taking a top name off the board for USF.

The Bulls are also going to find out their fate with four-star guard Kyle Walton soon as the Miami native will be making his commitment on Tuesday. Walton took his fourth and last scheduled official visit this past weekend when he was at USC along with another USF target in Nick Ryan, arguably the top name on USF's board regardless of position. Walton has also visited USF, Texas and Boston College but the Trojans remain the favorites.

USC is the Crystal Ball leader for Walton and Ryan.
