Recruiting Class in Review: USF's talent acquisition takes a slight bump down in 2039 but still land top class
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

With a good crop of talent in the Tampa area, USF was able to land a top three class, signing five players from the area. While a lot of them ended up being duds and this class in general leaves room to be desired, it still ended up making up a solid foundation for two national championship teams.

When it was all said and done, how does this class grade out? The grading criteria is as follows: 1 star for non-contributor, 2 star for depth player, 3 star for contributor, 4 star for impact starter, 5 star for a star player.

2039 USF Recruiting Class
HB Kellen Wright [HB #4]: 5'8", 190lbs | Tampa, FL [IMG] | 5-star | 4.32 40-yd dash, 270 Bench Press Max, 325 Squat Max
Career Stats » 413 carries, 2323 yards, 28 touchdowns, 106 receptions, 769 yards, 2 touchdowns, 55 kick returns, 1791 yards, 2 touchdowns, 15 punt returns, 225 yards, touchdown
Analysis » After being a bright spot in an underwhelming 2039 team as a true freshman, the Tampa native continued to be one of USF's best players on offense, getting better each season. He shared the backfield with a total of four other five-star recruits during his time at USF and still managed to rush for over 2,000 yards in his career despite never being the sole feature back. Was he a star? No but he could have been on just about any other team with his talent level.
Grade » 4-star

DE Ramon Hall [DE #5]: 6'2", 246lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star | 4.62 40-yd dash, 435 Bench Press Max, 605 Squat Max
Career Stats » 39 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 3 forced fumbles
Analysis » Hall surprised many when he decided to declare for the draft after his junior season despite never being a full-time starter at USF. The physical tools were there and he had a solid junior season with five sacks but Hall was ultimately just a guy in USF's rotation for his final two seasons.
Grade » 3-star

T Garrett McTaggart [T #2]: 6'4", 309lbs | San Antonio, TX | 4-star | 5.00 40-yd dash, 455 Bench Press Max, 645 Squat Max
Career Stats » 12 pancakes, 5 sacks allowed
Analysis » A one-year starter, McTaggart showed promise at left tackle as a redshirt sophomore before declaring for the draft, never fully making his impact on the team. He was an All-Champions division selection that year but it's tough to give him that fourth star for just one season.
Grade » 3-star

OLB E.J. Young [OLB #3]: 6'5", 242lbs | Miami, FL | 4-star | 4.70 40-yd dash, 430 Bench Pres Max, 580 Squat Max
Career Stats » 159 tackles, 62 tackles for loss, 20 sacks, interception
Analysis » USF's staff figured out pretty early that the recruiting services had underrated Young, even before he stepped a foot on campus. He had a situational role as a freshman before being the ultimate x-factor for USF's defense for his final two seasons, earning All-American honors both season.
Grade » 5-star

DT Brent Lawrence [DT #5]: 6'3", 275lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star | 5.08 40-yd dash, 460 Bench Press Max, 570 Squat Max
Career Stats » 36 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, forced fumble
Analysis » You want something a little bit more than just solid production when you land a four-star recruit and for three seasons, that's exactly what Lawrence was as part of USF's rotation at defensive tackle. Lawrence's production skyrocketed this year with nine tackles for loss and seven sacks. He's not quite a four star but he certainly earned that third one.
Grade » 3-star

ILB/OLB Joel Espinosa [ILB #4]: 5'9", 228lbs | Manchester, IA [IMG] | 4-star | 4.58 40-yd dash, 420 Bench Press Max, 580 Squat Max
Career Stats » 35 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 3 sacks
Analysis » Similar to Lawrence, maybe Espinosa can improve his production in his final year as he does have another year of eligibility remaining but Espinosa has largely been a two-deep guy at USF. He moved to outside linebacker a few seasons ago and has played there some for the past two seasons so we'll see if he finally makes that jump next season. He's a borderline three star but it's hard to put him on the same production level as a Lawrence, McTaggart or even Hall.
Grade » 2-star

G Ray Anderson [G #5]: 6'3", 266lbs | Scottdale, GA | 4-star | 4.84 40-yd dash, 470 Bench Press Max, 585 Squat Max
Career Stats » 9 pancakes, 6 sacks allowed
Analysis » Not elite but not an issue along the offensive line, Anderson is as ho-hum as they come for a guard, filling in the big shoes of Woody Humphrey. A two-year starter, Anderson could potentially pick up some All-Champions selection buzz, allowing just three sacks on the year.
Grade » 3-star

WR Brooks Coe [WR #31]: 6'4", 195lbs | West Palm Beach, FL | 4-star | 4.48 40-yd dash, 245 Bench Press Max, 225 Squat Max
Career Stats » 75 receptions, 958 yards, 5 touchdowns, 7 drops at USF | 64 receptions, 1047 yards, 9 touchdowns, 8 drops at Texas A&M
Analysis » The bulk of Coe's production was in two seasons at USF, flashing as a freshman and then being elevated to starter as a junior prior to his departure to the Aggies as a transfer. From a talent evaluation standpoint, USF clearly got this one right but in terms of production while at USF, not quite a four star.
Grade » 3-star

TE Jeff Rutledge [TE #10]: 6'5", 254lbs | Fort Lauderdale, FL | 4-star | 4.76 40-yd dash, 365 Bench Press Max, 300 Squat Max
Career Stats » 149 receptions, 1816 yards, 24 touchdowns, 0 drops, 22 pancakes, 1 sack allowed
Analysis » Rutledge's second team All-American nod as a sophomore and his 0 drops in three years earns him that fifth star as he was Mr. Reliable and one of USF's better tight ends over the years. In fact, only Sean Price (160 receptions), Jean-Jacques Francois (228) and Chris Wallace (393) caught more passes as a tight end than Rutledge in school history and he did in just three seasons compared to all of the others being four year guys.
Grade » 5-star

T/G Steve Bailey [G #8]: 6'5", 311lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star | 4.72 40-yd dash, 435 Bench Press Max, 595 Squat Max
Career Stats » 17 pancakes, 11 sacks allowed
Analysis » A force at left guard as a redshirt sophomore, Bailey has struggled this season in the transition to left tackle, allowing seven sacks. With some talented players coming in, the potential is there for Bailey to return to guard as a redshirt senior if he does decide to come back
Grade » 3-star

CB Travis Jones [CB #10]: 5'11", 167lbs | Marion, SC | 4-star | 4.54 40-yd dash, 340 Bench Press Max, 270 Squat Max
Career Stats » 112 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, sack, 10 interceptions, 3 touchdowns, 12 pass breakups
Analysis » At the time of his commitment, this was a questionable pickup as Jones' physical profile didn't wow you and his athletic testing numbers weren't that impressive. The coaching staff always loved his football IQ and after redshirting as a freshman, Jones emerged as the fourth corner in a very talented and crowded cornerback room that also included Bryan Carter, K.J. Waters and Akeem Smith. Jones' star turn was last season, earning All-Americans honors to go along with his five interceptions. He's already got four this season and could potentially return for a fifth season as a redshirt senior as he's dialed in on breaking USF's all time record for career interceptions.
Grade » 5-star

WR Tracy Brooks [WR #62]: 6'4", 213lbs | Vestavia Hills, AL | 3-star | 4.34 40-yd dash, 240 Bench Press Max, 315 Squat Max
Career Stats » 20 receptions, 239 yards, 2 touchdowns at USF | 41 receptions, 527 yards, 3 touchdowns at Wake Forest
Analysis » An intriguing prospect with his size and speed, Brooks never did much at USF but has put together a really good year for Wake Forest and with another year of eligibility left, he figures to be one of the AAC's better returning receivers.
Grade » 2-star

S/CB Anthony Gunn [CB #16]: 6'1", 182lbs | Atlanta, GA | 3-star | 4.48 40-yd dash, 215 Bench Press Max, 270 Squat Max
Career Stats » 36 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, sack, 4 interceptions, 4 pass breakups
Analysis » A common theme in this class, Gunn struggled to get on the field early in his career, eventually making the move to safety where he was a backup for a season before being elevated to starter this year. He's been real great addition, reeling in four interceptions and with another year left, Gunn has an outside shot at landing that fifth star.
Grade » 4-star

DE Kareem Cunningham [DE #69]: 6'6", 266lbs | Tampa, FL | 3-star | 4.74 40-yd dash, 375 Bench Press Max, 560 Squat Max
Career Stats » 14 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, touchdown, fumble recovery
Analysis » He's had a bigger role in the past two seasons but not enough to earn that third star.
Grade » 2-star

OLB Erik Wheeler [OLB #66]: 6'2", 211lbs | La Porte, TX | 3-star | 4.66 40-yd dash, 370 Bench Press Max, 580 Squat Max
Career Stats » 5 tackles
Analysis » A depth piece with another year of eligibility left.
Grade » 1-star

K Chris Sanders [K #7]: 5'10", 180lbs | Pompano Beach, FL | 3-star | 4.64 40-yd dash, 255 Bench Press Max, 280 Squat Max
Career Stats » 53 of 64, 54 FG Lng, 100% XP
Analysis » After some misses last year, Sanders is having a career season, making 94 percent of his kicks this season and has never missed an extra point in his career. Sanders needs sixteen more kicks to tie Matt Perkins' record of 69 field goals which is unlikely but he'll likely finish second, trailing Kevin Justice by ten field goals.
Grade » 3-star

P Gerald Wallace [P #6]: 6'2", 199lbs | West Palm Beach, FL | 3-star | 4.82 40-yd dash, 225 Bench Press Max, 290 Squat Max
Career Stats » 131 punts, 34.8 Net Avg, 77 Longest Punt, 31 inside the 20, 17 touchbacks
Analysis » He's not quite Adam Cain, USF's best punter of all time with a ridiculous 40.6 net average on his punts (no one else has gone over 38) but he's as good as the rest of USF's other punters and was never a liability, even as a freshman.
Grade » 3-star

HB Victor King [NR]: 6'0", 234lbs | Cairo, GA | Walk-On
Career Stats » 18 carries, 53 yards, 5 touchdowns, 1 reception, 4 yards
Analysis » A former walk-on, King earned a scholarship for his work on special teams as a sophomore before earning a role this year as USF's goal line back, scoring five touchdowns.
Grade » 2-star

WR Mike Thomas [NR]: 5'10:, 187lbs | Ozark, AL | Walk-On
Career Stats » 13 receptions, 110 yards at USF | 72 receptions, 1118 yards, 12 touchdowns at Texas
Analysis » Not quite USF talent level, Thomas has shined at Texas State and should have another monster year as a senior for the Bobcats
Grade » 1-star

Superlative Awards
Most Important Signing: Whenever you have a five-star Tampa native, landing them is a must which wasn't a slam dunk with Kellen Wright. His parents were Northwestern grads so the Wildcats were a wild card in this recruitment so avoiding that embarrassment was a must.

Most Productive Signing: Travis Jones and Jeff Rutledge make strong arguments but it's E.J. Young and it's not necessarily close as he was a starter in every season which wasn't the case for Jones nor Rutledge.

Biggest Bust of the Class: It's a toss up between Espinosa who still has eligibility left and Ramon Hall who was a good prospect but far from the second best player in this class which is where he was ranked.

Most Untapped Potential: Neither Hall nor Cunningham ever really put it together into being a complete player despite their obvious physical talent.

Biggest Steal of the Class: Any of the two corners in Travis Jones and Anthony Gunn fit the mold even with Jones being a four-star prospect as he ended up being way better and way quicker than many expected even though he flashes as a freshman in the spring.

Biggest Lost of the Class: It ended up working out as USF landed Jeff Rutledge but they really wanted tight end Jermaine Johnson, who was ranked higher than Rutledge, to form a monster tight end class. Johnson ended up at Navy with Malcolm Francois Jr, catching 39 passes as a freshman. So far in his Navy career, Johnson has caught 186 passes for 2,813 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Another interesting note is that USF was after another IMG linebacer in Talanoa Langi who ended up at Missouri with USF landing Espinosa instead. This season, Langi has sixteen tackles for loss and three forced fumbles for the Tigers.

Oklahoma really on the edge there. They have bounced back after some early losses. I think if they have to fight to stay in a bowl game they can probably win
If the season ended today, they'd be playing Auburn in the promotional bowl which they should win

The Bullpen: USF's potential quarterback controversy ends before it can even begin
Jonathan Bright -- BullsNation.com Football Reporter

The stage was set for a full fledge quarterback controversy heading into the playoffs as USF sophomore Rashad Woodard came into the Florida State game in the second quarter and threw two touchdown passes.

The only hiccup? Woodard would leave the game with an injury and has since been ruled out for the rest of the regular season with what USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. is calling an extensive back injury that won't require surgery.

"No surgery but he'll be out for a while," Francois Sr. told the media on Wednesday, "It's too early to start talking about a return so I'll leave it at that, it's going to be a while."

Woodard replaced junior Mark Cunningham who had thrown a touchdown pass and led USF down the field for a field goal in his first two drives after starting the game. Cunningham would return following Woodard's injury and played the entire third quarter, giving credence to rumors that the plan in place heading into the game was for each quarterback to play a quarter in the first half and ride the hot hand, a sign that there is indeed a quarterback battle despite USF offensive coordinator Peter Nicholson's assertions the week prior that it was Cunningham's job.

"We always want to get guys looks with different units and different people and the situation allowed for it," said Nicholson on Saturday of Woodard playing with the first team offense.

‣ What USF has to play for against Michigan State

USF's spot in the college football playoffs is clinched and has been for a few weeks now with them additionally clinching the Champions Division title two weeks ago with their win over Oregon.

What isn't guaranteed is their seeding in the CFP as they are currently the top ranked team but a loss to Michigan State could see them drop outside of the top four. We'll see how the committee handles the rankings to potentially avoid rematches in the very first round. As it stands in the latest rankings, USF would play Michigan in the opening round which they beat earlier in the season 63-16, not exactly a compelling matchup. A loss for the Bulls solves some of those problems as they could slid to the third seed and instead play Stanford or Alabama, who played them closer.

What's also on the line is an undefeated season, a feat USF has accomplished five times, the last time being their national championship run in 2038 where they beat Oklahoma in the quarterfinals, USC in the semis and then Alabama in the final.

USF fans should expect a similar strategy to last week with the starters playing the first half but then eventually phasing in the backups as by the fourth quarter, it was exclusively freshmen and backups in the game. If it's a closer game, however, it should be interesting to see Francois Sr's decision.

‣ Smith triplets will make decision as a group

In a recent presser, Southern Miss offensive tackle Brian Smith Jr. told the media that he and his triplet brothers -- USF defensive linemen Brandon and Marcellus -- will meet after the season to decide if they are going to declare for the draft.

"We've always said we were going to go in the same draft," Smith Jr. told WHLT of his looming draft decision, "Obviously another season is still on the table but right now taking it day by day, focusing on playing football and then once all of our seasons are done, we'll talk about it and make a decision as a unit."

Smith Jr. was recently projected as a potential top ten pick in next spring's draft with Marcellus also getting some recent early day two buzz while Brandon will likely end up being one of the top nose tackles selected.

Bulls refuse to lose against a pesky Michigan State team, finish out regular season undefeated
Despite his offense giving him no reason to do so throughout the game, USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. decided to trust his offense, leaving them on the field for fourth and two with a chance to clinch the game with a conversion as opposed to punting it and relying on the defense.

USF quarterback Mark Cunningham was able to complete the quick pass to Eddie Shaw and kept the upset birds at bay, beating Michigan State 9-3 on Senior Night to finish out the regular season undefeated on Saturday.

It was a tough outing for Cunningham who threw two red zone interceptions and was generally ineffective as a passer, completing 60 percent of his passes with a 96.4 passer rating.

As much as Cunningham struggled, it was an even more uphill battle for Michigan State quarterback Chris Mack who threw three interceptions, including one in the end zone when the Spartans had a chance to cut into the lead on fourth and goal in the fourth quarter.

Report: USF heavily considered starting Rashad Woodard against Florida State
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

According to multiple sources within intimate knowledge of the situation, USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. had to be talked out of starting sophomore quarterback Rashad Woodard in the Florida State game over incumbent starter Mark Cunningham.

Cunningham led the team to a national championship last season and was part of the rotation at quarterback during his freshman season when USF also won the national title. However, the junior had struggled in the recent weeks with turnovers before eventually being benched for Woodard in the Oregon game with the sophomore throwing for two touchdowns and leading the Bulls to a victory.

While publicly offensive coordinator Peter Nicholson said that Cunningham was entrenched as the starter, behind closed doors, there was a 'split room' situation with Francois Sr. and other prominent staff members backing Woodard while Nicholson and other coaches believed that benching Cunningham at this point of the season would be detrimental to the team.

Cunningham ultimately got the start and while Woodard eventually got in the game, it would be a moot point as he suffered an injury that will likely keep him out of the rest of the regular season.

"He's probably playing right now if he's not hurt," said a source within the program, "If he didn't start the Florida State game, he probably starts against Michigan State, it was inevitable, everyone knew he was the better quarterback after fall camp."

USF will likely play Michigan in the College Football Playoffs Quarterfinals, a rematch of their 63-16 victory back in October. In that game, Cunningham threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns.
