USF dominates Golden Eagles to walk off with a 42-17 victory
The Smith Bowl between USF defensive linemen Brandon, Marcellus Smith and Southern Miss left tackle Brian Smith Jr. would prove to be a dud as Smith Jr. won all of the individual matchups with his brothers while Brandon and Marcellus' Bulls blew out Southern Miss 42-17 to open their season on Saturday.

USF junior Rashad Woodard's first career start went smoothly and nearly perfect according to quarterback coach Jeremy Butler, who highlighted Woodard's intercepted pass in the second quarter as the lone mark against him in what Butler called an 'outstanding performance'.

The Texas native threw four touchdowns and rushed for another while leading the team in rushing with 108 yards on just thirteen carries, averaging over eight yards per carry. Of Woodard's three incompletions, one was the interception while the other two were drops by Josh Butler and Jake Thompson. He was aided on the ground by Justin Thomas (75 yards) and freshman Cameron Stokes (94 yards).

The Bullpen: The offense already looks different one game into the Jeremy Butler experience redux
Jonathan Bright -- BullsNation.com Football Reporter

It's just one game against a lesser talented team in Southern Miss but already, USF's offense looks much different than under Jeremy Butler's play calling than it did with Peter Nicholson all of last season, even when things were humming.

The personnel usage was a lot more varied with more utilization of the tight ends (even if they weren't targeted much) with a lot more motion and different looks, formation wise. USF also ran the ball 50 times against Southern Miss with relative ease. When comparing that to the UCF game last year, arguably the worst team USF faced last season, they weren't able to run the ball that consistently well against the Knights, relying on explosive plays.

The offense is also aided by having a dynamic quarterback in Rashad Woodard who can pick up the tough yards as well as provide the explosive plays, both with his arms and his legs. USF didn't have that last season in Mark Cunningham who was accurate when things were clicking but when they weren't, just didn't have that equalize that Woodard has in his legs to be able to make stuff happen.

‣ Dave Parker, Travis Jones and Oliver Colvin all back at practice

USF running back Dave Parker, cornerback Travis Jones and outside linebacker Oliver Colvin all left the Southern Miss with injuries but were all active and full participants in USF's practice on Monday and Tuesday.

Parker went through USF's concussion protocol on Sunday and was cleared following another test on Monday before he practiced. It's unclear what Jones and Colvin suffered as the team did not comment on it but it appeared to be a lower extremity injury that took them out of the game in the second half.

All three are expected to be available on Saturday when USF travels to Tuscaloosa.

‣ Richard Smith flashes in limited playing time, USF DC Trai Martinez bullish on increased role

Redshirt junior Richard Smith had two of the biggest plays of the game on defense against Southern Miss, flying across the line of scrimmage to tackle running back Scott Neal on a big hit and also sacked quarterback Kevin Parks later in the game.

The former four-star prospect is entering his fourth season at USF and has all of two tackles to his name as a career special teams guy but that could change in the near future as defensive coordinator Trai Martinez was extremely complimentary of Smith's play on the field this past Saturday and throughout fall camp.

"He really came alive in the back half of camp," Martinez said of Smith after the game, "He's one of our better athletes, one of the only guys outside of [Julian Harrell] that can run with Justin [Thomas] out of the backfield, stride for stride. He's the kind of guy you want to scheme up plays for and if he keeps making them, his role on the team will just get bigger and bigger."

Smith is currently Joel Espinosa's backup at JACK linebacker.

Top 30 USF Players of Francois Era: No. 30 - No. 26
Charlie Flowers -- gousfbulls.com

Perhaps the toughest stretch to pick, these are the bubble guys that easily could have been on the outside looking in as an honorable mention but also made strong cases to be inside the top 25 so naturally, they fall just inside the top 30 to make the list but just outside the top 25.

No. 30: G Brian Brown (2017-2020)
Recruiting Profile: #116th ranked OG in 2016 | 6'0", 309lbs | Bonita Springs, FL | 2-star
Career Stats: 44 pancakes, 2 sacks allowed.
Games Started: 28
Record as Starter: 25-3
Record vs. UCF: 2-0
Conference Championships: 2 (Big XII)
Bowl Record: 2-0
BCS Bowl Record: 2-0 (Sugar Bowl)
National Championships: 0
Accolades: 2020 2nd team All-Big 12

Brown came in at No. 15 in the first iteration of this list and it's only right that he closes it out once more in the top 30 as one of the OGs (and offensive guards) of the Bulls program.

After redshirting his first season and spending the next two as the team's backup right guard, the former two-star offensive guard seemed destined to just be another faceless, nameless backup offensive linemen along a line of plenty before and after him. How does he end up on this list?

The Bulls offense, in no uncertain terms, ran through the left side of the offensive line in 2019 when head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. took over as play caller and went away from the pass heavy offenses of Marcel Smith and Justin Fuente. He did it in 2019 alongside Derrick Drew at left tackle who had played guard previously and paved the way for three ball carriers with over 400 yards rushing with two rushing for over 700 in David Ross and Michael Harrell. He did so without surrendering a single sack.

It's Brown's play in 2020 that gets him on this list as he once again the team's best offensive lineman and was just as dominant with a brand new left tackle in Victor Tucker who was making the transition from guard. This time around, USF had two rushers over 1,000 yards (Harrell, 1231 and Troy Henry, 1021) and two more over 700 yards (Thomas, 785 and Reynolds, 775). He surrendered just two sacks that season and was named 2nd-team All-Big 12.

While this may be a surprise to some, anyone that watch those two teams know they don't win two Sugar Bowls and two Big 12 championships without Brown whose physicality and 'nastiness' on the offensive line has yet to be matched.

No. 29: LB Greg Booth (2027-2030)
Recruiting Profile: 18th ranked OLB in 2027 | 6'1", 225lbs | Wylie, TX | 4-star | Picked USF over Colorado State
Career Stats: 288 tackles, 54 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 6 interceptions, 2 touchdowns, 13 pass deflections, forced fumble
Record vs. UCF: 3-1
-- W 66-30
-- L 28-7
-- W 56-33
-- W 52-28: 10 tackles, 3 tackles for loss
Conference Championships: 2 (SEC)
Bowl Record: 4-0 (Citrus Bowl, Sugar Bowl)
BCS Bowl Record: 4-0 (Citrus Bowl, Sugar Bowl)
National Championships: 0
Accolades: 2029 1st team All-American, 2029 1st team All-SEC, 2030 1st team All-American, 2030 1st team All-SEC, 2030 Bednarik Award recipient (best defensive player), 2030 Butkus Award recipient (best linebacker)

There's going to be plenty of five-star recruits and household names along this list so the guys like Greg Booth -- who was a four-star prospect in his own right -- get a little bump, personally.

He surprised a lot of people with his play as a true freshman, recording ten tackles for loss and three interceptions despite only being a situation player for the Bulls. He continued to be part of the rotation at linebacker as a sophomore, finishing the year third on the team in tackles with 50 tackles.

As a junior, he emerged as one of the best linebackers in the country, leading the team with 100 tackles and was named an All-American, earning the right to wear the No. 1 jersey heading into his senior season, replacing B.J. Patton from the year before who recorded a team-record 29 sacks.

Booth would live up to the hype, winning the Butkus and Bednarik as a senior on his way to a second straight season as an All-American. Booth also emerged as a playmaker, recording 25 tackles for loss despite the knock on him coming out of high school being his lack of size. He stuck with it, became a complete linebacker and is now the blueprint that USF's coaching staff to this day use to help develop players out of high school at the linebacker position that lack traditional size.

No. 28: HB/WR Derek Young (2035-2037)
Recruiting Profile: 1st ranked ATH in 2035 | 6'0", 217lbs | Washington, IA [IMG] | 5-star | Picked USF over Alabama and Notre Dame
Career Stats: 147 carries, 1195 yards, 10 touchdowns, 200 receptions, 3027 yards, 29 touchdowns
Record vs. UCF: 3-0
-- W 70-27: 4 receptions, 40 yards
-- W 59-14: 3 receptions, 155 yards, touchdown
-- W 70-24: 12 carries, 148 yards, 5 receptions, 45 yards, touchdown
Conference Championships: 2 (SEC, Champions Division)
Bowl Record: 1-0 (Fiesta Bowl)
BCS Bowl Record: 1-0 (Fiesta Bowl)
National Championships: 0
Accolades: 2035 Freshman All-American (WR), 2036 2nd team All-SEC (WR), 2037 1st team All-Champions Division (HB), 2037 1st team All-American (HB), 2037 Heisman Finalist, 2037 Doak Walker Award recipient (best running back)

Even before his spectacular junior season, Derek Young was well on his way to being one of USF's top receivers of all time with an 800-yard season as a freshman along with ten touchdowns. In his second season, Young really found his stride as he was becoming a more complete receiver, catching 58 passes for 1,013 yards from quarterback Joey Spence who threw for over 5,000 yards that season.

Enter Jeremy Butler who saw Young's background as a high school running back and wanted to capitalize on that as the team was going to be losing a dynamic running back in Bobby Jackson who had declared for the draft just as Butler arrived as the team's new OC.

The tone for that season would be set early in the spring where both Young and Butler publicly spoke about using Young as a runner more with the Iowa native even stating that 1,000 yards in both rushing and receiving would be his goal. It didn't take long for it to translate in-game with Young rushing for 48 yards and catching nine passes for 133 yards against Alabama in a 34-20 win over the Tide in the second game of the season. Young's coming out party though was against Florida where he rushed for 101 yards and caught seven passes for 113 yards.

He would finish the season with 1,169 yards rushing and 1,210 yards receiving, the first and only USF player to ever accomplish this feat. Young's junior season not only secures him a place in the top 30 but he has a case to be ranked even higher but he did play in an era and an offense with inflated offensive numbers compared to other USF players that are higher on the list but with lesser numbers.

No. 27: WR Franklin Sapp (2016-2018)
Recruiting Profile: 43rd ranked ATH in 2016 | 6'3", 186lbs | Dock Junction, GA | 4-star
Career Stats: 202 receptions, 3155 yards, 14 touchdowns.
Games Started: 38
Record as Starter: 30-8
Record vs. UCF: 3-0
Conference Championships: 2 (AAC)
Bowl Record: 1-2
BCS Bowl Record: 0-1 (National Championship)
National Championships: 0
Accolades: 2017 1st team All-AAC, 2016 Freshman All-American

The reason why the team's fastest player, typically on offense, wears the #4 is because of the originator Franklin Sapp. Sapp was a bit of a forgotten name during the recruitment process when in any other class, he would have been the crown jewel. The team signed two other higher ranked receivers in Jay Stevens and Corey Sharp and signed their first five-stars in Dan Johnson and Zac White, who would end up playing receiver.

After injuries slowed him down at the beginning of his career, Sapp would leave USF with the following records: career receiving yards, single season receptions and single season receiving yards. The counting stats alone don't do Sapp justice as he was and still is one of the most explosive players in AAC history, not just at USF, averaging nearly 15.5 yards per reception.

Some might argue that Sapp deserves to be even higher on the list but a lot of his records have since been broken and while he was impactful, other Bulls have a longer list of accolades.

No. 26: WR Zac White (2016-2018)
Recruiting Profile: 3rd ranked ATH in 2016 | 5'10", 218lbs | Jesup, GA | 5-star
Career Stats: 226 receptions, 3065 yards, 26 touchdowns.
Games Started: 35
Record as Starter: 28-7
Record vs. UCF: 3-0
Conference Championships: 2 (AAC)
Bowl Record: 1-2
BCS Bowl Record: 0-1 (National Championship)
National Championships: 0
Accolades: 2017 1st team All-AAC, 2016 2nd team All-AAC, 2016 Freshman All-American

The bigger name when they got on campus, White was the star of the team from the moment he stepped foot on campus. He set a school record for most receiving touchdowns in a single season in his first season and would leave USF as the career leader in receptions and touchdowns as well as setting the single season record for most receptions in his sophomore season.

For both White and Sapp, as well as others on and not on the list, the fact that they played mostly in the AAC and not the Big 12 and/or the SEC does factor as to why they are not higher. Could White and Sapp have been just as good against Power 5 competition? Probably but there are other players that answered that question definitively.

An argument could be made for players such as Derek Young, Bobby Jackson and Jason McDowell to be higher than Sapp and White but ultimately, they set the culture at USF and will always have a spot in any top list for the Bulls.
