Nebraska and Colorado opt out of Big 12 expansion talks, open doors back up for Bulls
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

According to a source close to the situation, officials at both the University of Colorado and the University of Nebraska are 'prepared to reject a conference invite' from the Big 12 should one come, as first reported by ESPN.

The news comes just days before Big 12 conference and school officials were supposed to vote on adding two more members to the conference. This could be the death blow to the conference's wishes to get to twelve members for the 2018 season.

According to reports, Texas schools Houston and SMU are out of the picture and with internal favorites Colorado and Nebraska also out of the running, the Big 12 is expected to rescind their January vote which called for the expansion. The likely outcome is now that the Big 12 remains a ten-team conference and revisits this discussion at a later date.

Both USF and UCF do have outside shots however at perhaps the vote still happening and instead of it concerning Nebraska and Colorado, the conference will instead look at USF and UCF. At the time of the initial vote in January, both Florida schools were viewed as "desperate measures" and these times could call for them.

BREAKING NEWS: Big 12 Board of Directors Authorizes Expansion Talks with USF, UCF
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

Acting upon a unanimous recommendation of its expansion subcommittee, the Big 12 Conference Board of Directors has authorized negotiations with University of South Florida and the University of Central Florida to become the Conference's 11th and 12th member, and instructed the Big 12 commissioner to immediately begin discussions with USF and UCF.

The action of the Board was without dissent.

The decision is a complete 180 degree flip from where the Big 12 stood just a few weeks ago when the sentiment was 'Colorado and Nebraska or bust' when it came to expansion talk but given the way those talks went, the Big 12 appeared to be more desperate than ever. The conference is hoping to somehow forgo the 24-month notice period that the American Athletic Conference has in its bylaws and it will likely cost quite a bit of money that will most likely come from the Big 12, not the respective Florida schools.

Bulls land third five-star recruit in program history in talented but troubled Texas athlete Trey Davis
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

They say you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. USF head coach Malcolm Francois is trying to turn USF from a formidable football program into a Power 5 powerhouse and you need talent in order to do so and he just landed a big one.

But at what cost?

Following a big recruiting weekend where USF played host to a bevvy of talented recruits, five-star athlete Trey Davis announced his commitment while on Instagram Live with USF receivers Zac White and Franklin Sapp on Sunday night. The announcement quickly overshadowed the previous commitments of four-star receiver Joel Green and three-star outside linebacker Ryan Fletcher the previous night.

Green is a six-foot-one, 196 pound receiver out of Belle Glade, Florida with good top end speed while Fletcher hails out of Miami, Florida and is a versatile, athletic off-ball linebacker that can fill out his six-foot-two, 232 pound frame and transform into an edge linebacker similar to Jeffrey Reese.

Davis is the 7th ranked athlete in the nation and 21st ranked player with legit 4.44 speed and the ability to play at corner, running back and his more natural position, receiver. Despite all of this, Davis was lightly recruited with Bowling Green, according to reports, being the only remaining school willing to accept his Letter of Intent.

Davis shined as a freshman at Robert E. Lee High School before an altercation with a coach saw him transfer to Midland High School. Davis' time at Midland was short-lived and never played a single down for the Bulldogs before transferring that summer to IMG Academy where he found success on the Ascenders varsity team at corner while also playing three games during his sophomore season on their national team. While at IMG, Davis is rumored to have had an "incident with a female student-athlete" which led to his dismissal according to those close to the program. According to Davis, the decision to leave IMG was his and he moved back to Midland, Texas where he enrolled at Greenwood High School and played his junior season there before he was suspended for the Texas State Playoffs for breaking an undisclosed team rule and eventually was ruled academically ineligible heading into the spring.

Davis is finishing out his senior year at a charter school in Midland, Premier High School, and did not play high school football this season. Despite this, Davis has remained a five-star, albeit a slight dip in the rankings and hands the Bulls just their third five-star in program history.

BREAKING NEWS: USF, UCF accepts invitation to join Big 12
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

After five days of waiting, USF and UCF announced what most expected. The universities will join the Big 12 conference next year.

"Joining the Big 12 connects us not only to schools with who have a rich tradition in sports, but also to schools committed to academic excellence,” USF president Judy Genshaft said.

Big 12 officials voted unanimously Thursday morning to ask USF and UCF to join the conference.

“Acting upon a unanimous recommendation of its expansion subcommittee, the Big 12 Conference board of directors has authorized negotiations with University of Central Florida and the University of South Florida to become the conference’s 11th and 12 member and instructed Commissioner Bob Bowsby to immediately begin discussions with both schools.

USF and UCF will join the Big 12 in 2018 with no yet disclosed number on the buyout fee for the early departure.

Rumors of the possible move reached news and radio stations across the nation. Fans and Big 12 schools shared their excitement for the bid before the official announcement was made.

President of Oklahoma State University Burns Hargis said “USF is an excellent fit for the Big 12 in terms of its excellent academics, its top-notch athletic programs and adding the great state of Florida to our conference. We look forward to the Bulls becoming a member of the Big 12.”
