Los Angeles Chargers hire Toronto's Assistant GM Stephon White as General Manager
D.J. Porter -- ESPN.com

Former San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco foretold there would be a "new era in Chargers football" if the team wasn't successful this past season.

That new era has officially begun with the hiring of a new general manager, Stephon White.

The Chargers announced they have hired White, a member of the Toronto Huskies/Washington Redskins' organization since 2020 and the team's Executive Vice President and Assistant General Manager since 2023. White will be introduced by the Chargers at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Originally hired as a football operations intern for the Carolina Panthers back in 2013, White served as a coaching intern in 2014 before he was promoted to a scouting assistant and eventually a college scout himself for the remainder of Ron Rivera's tenure in Carolina. White was pivotal in the Panthers' scouting and eventual drafting of running back Christian McCaffrey.

When Rivera was fired by Carolina and hired in Washington, White followed Rivera to Washington where he was promoted to Assistant Director of College Scouting. When the entire football staff was blown up following the purchase and relocation of the Redskins franchise, White was one of the few personnel kept along with Doug Williams. White was then promoted in 2021 and has since served as the Director of Player Personnel.

White has served as the 'secondary' voice behind general manager Louis Riddick since 2021 in all 'personnel related' matters and is widely viewed as the architect behind the Huskies 2025 Super Bowl winning team.

White, 32, is the youngest known General Manager in NFL history and will now try to turn around a franchise that has won just seven games in the last two seasons and is tasked with finding a new head coach following the firing of Jason Garrett.

Editors Note: After winning the Super Bowl with Toronto, decided to take up a challenge again and this franchise will now be following Stephon White to the Chargers and rebuilding them.

Inside the Front Office with General Manager Stephon White
Roster Forecast
Salary Cap: $230M
Salaries: $163M
Penalties: $400k
Cap Space: $66.2M
Rookie Reserve: $15M
Draft Picks: R1P2, R2P34, R3P66, R4P98, R4P101, R5P130, R5P133, R6P162, R7P194

Quarterback
Under Contract: Hal Sams [74 Ovr, $4.25M cap hit in 2026] | Anthony Tinker [66 Ovr, $980K]

White's notes: Sams is a four-year starter that's been decent with a career year last season with 26 touchdowns to just nine interceptions. A former Rookie of the Year and third round pick, he has some interesting traits as a passer but certainly not a lock to be QB1.

Running back
Under Contract: Felix Whitaker [68 Ovr, $1.71M] | Wendell Williams [60 Ovr, $330k]

White's notes: There's not a lot to like at the running back position as second round pick Whitaker just doesn't bring much to the table to get excited about. This room needs to be revamped.

Wide receiver
Under Contract: Amon Ra St. Brown [79 Ovr, $5.64M] | Justin Jefferson [78 Ovr, $5.47M] | Tre'Quan Smith [74 Ovr, $3.69M] | Deion Daniel [72 Ovr, $780K]

White's notes: Unlike running back, there is something to like about this position group. It's a bit overpaid but Jefferson is an interesting prospect that Toronto wanted as well when he was a free agent.

Tight end
Under Contract: Hunter Henry [84 Ovr, $8.46M] | Leonard Lowry [67 Ovr, $860k] | Deontae Hodges [60 Ovr, $730k]

White's notes: Henry's price tag and age, 31, are concerning but he's one of the few veteran leaders on the offense. His replacement is also not on the horizon so likely to be a major part of the offense for next season.

Offensive Line
Under Contract: G Darryl Williams [73 Ovr, $3.69M] | G Nelson Halladay [71 Ovr, $760k] | T Tristan Wirfs [81 Ovr, $7.88M]

White's notes: Could see a brand new starting four plus Wirfs for next season.

Defensive Line
Under Contract: DE Joey Bosa [93 Ovr, $18.7M] | DE Christian Childs [82 Ovr, $7.35M] | DE Takk McKinley [79 Ovr, $8.02M] | DE Rashard Keaton [78 Ovr, $7.37M]

White's notes: Three first round picks at defensive end and then another high-priced free agent at defensive end doesn't seem like a good allocation of resources. Childs tips the scale over at 300 pounds so a move to defensive tackle is likely while McKinley is stealing snaps from Keaton, last year's number one overall pick who didn't play much.

Linebacker
Under Contract: OLB Layne Scott [76 Ovr, $6.92M] | OLB Jack Washington [70 Ovr, $1.04M] | ILB Zach Cunningham [77 Ovr, $6.18M] | ILB Khary Vaughn [68 Ovr, $710k] | Jaylen Lindley [65 Ovr, $760k] | OLB Julian Okwara [81 Ovr, $11.8M] | OLB Matt Hewitt [71 Ovr, $1.87M]

White's notes: Scott is a former top five pick that really needs to get it going if he's going to get an extension while Okwara is a bit overpriced and the rest of the unit is just okay.

Secondary
Under Contract: CB Malik Truman [83 Ovr, $10.3M] | CB Desmond King [81 Ovr, $13.9M] | CB Kion Cochrane [72 Ovr, $1.74M] | S Nasir Adderley [78 Ovr, $2.34M] | S Derwin James [92 Ovr, $12.8M]

White's notes: The safeties are really good and Truman is another played that we wanted in Toronto coming out of the draft but besides that, the secondary needs a lot of work.

Special Teams
Under Contract: None

White's notes: Another position that needs revamping.

ESPN.com ‣ Los Angeles Chargers Daily News
Marcellus Kellerman -- ESPN Senior Writer

‣ Flores top candidate for Chargers' head coaching job

Former Patriots and Dolphins head coach Brian Flores is rumored to have interviewed for the head coach opening with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The team reportedly interviewed Adam Gase, Kliff Kingsbury and Mike Vrabel for the job as well with Flores being viewed as the 'leader of the clubhouse' by a source close to the organization. The same source also noted that Chargers' GM Stephon White came from Toronto which had the only trio of a minority owner, coach and general manager in the league.

‣ Bigby to visit Chargers, potential reunion with White

Free agent cornerback Donovan Bigby was one of the several 'hand pick' players drafted by then Assistant GM Stephon White when he was with Toronto. White reportedly met with Bigby on Tuesday, who spends his off-seasons in Los Angeles already.

Bigby will likely cost the team anywhere from $50 to $60 million and with money tied up in Malik Truman and veteran cornerback Desmond King, it would make the cornerback room one of the most expensive in the league.

Flores hired as Chargers' next head coach following Patriots firing
Kent Curry -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

The Los Angeles Chargers have hired former Patriots and Dolphins head coach Brian Flores as their head coach, replacing the fired Jason Garrett.

Flores went 7-8-1 in his lone season in New England before a front office change led to his firing as well as the franchise is still trying to capture their previous success. Prior to his short stint in New England, Flores went 37-57-2 in his six seasons with the Miami Dolphins, having just one winning season and never making the playoffs.

While he is reputed to be a good defensive coach, Flores' lack of on-field success as a head coach lead many to wonder if other factors did not lead to his hiring as the new head coach of the Chargers under new general manager Stephon White.

NFL Head Coaching Changes
Chicago Bears :: Jason Garrett replaces Mike Tomlin
Tampa Bay Buccaneers :: Adam Gase replaces Carlos Calhoun
Los Angeles Chargers :: Brian Flores replaces Jason Garrett
New York Jets :: Arthur Cowans replaces Kliff Kinsbury
Detroit Lions :: Mike Tomlin replaces Adam Gase
New England Patriots :: Tomas Pita replaces Brian Flores
Tennessee Titans :: Carlos Calhoun replaces Mike Vrabel
Baltimore Ravens :: Kliff Kinsbury replaces Jon Gruden (retired)
Los Angeles Rams :: Mike Vrabel replaces John Harbaugh (retired)
Atlanta Falcons :: Jay Gruden replaces Mike Zimmer (retired)

ESPN.com ‣ Los Angeles Chargers Week in Review
Marcellus Kellerman -- ESPN Senior Writer

‣ Chargers 'extremely high' on South Carolina's QB Joseph Wentz

With the number two overall pick in the draft, the Los Angeles Chargers have plenty of options but at the top of their wish list appears to be quarterback Joseph Wentz out of South Carolina.

The six-foot-six quarterback prospect had a strong NFL Combine showing to solidify his case as the top player in the draft leaving many to wonder if Chicago, despite drafting Rob Lucas in the second round last season, will pull the trigger on Wentz.

The Chargers are reportedly 'extremely high' on Wentz and should he be there at number two, they are expected to select him and move on from Hal Sams.

‣ White, Chargers make big free agency splash with Bigby signing

Former Toronto Huskies cornerback Donovan Bigby has signed a five year, $65 million deal to join the Los Angeles Chargers, reuniting him with the man that drafted him in Chargers' GM Stephon White.

Bigby is set to make $11.7 million in 2026 with the deal escalating all the way up to $14.4 million in 2030. In comparison to the other top corners from his draft class, Toronto teammate Ashley Konrad is making $14.6 million next season and $18.5 million at the end of his deal in 2030. Current teammate Malik Truman, meanwhile, is only making $10.3 million next season and $12.8 million in 2030.

It certainly is not a coincidence that Bigby is making more than Truman while also not setting a new market for corners as he's well under what Konrad is making.

‣ Chargers continue to add depth with more signing on defense

While the Donovan Bigby signing made a lot of noise, the LA Chargers also added some complimentary pieces on their defense. The team signed safety Karl Joseph, defensive Chad Thomas and defensive tackle Danny Shelton to one year deals.

They also signed safety Ashtyn Davis to a two-year deal worth $4.42 million and added kicker Michael Badgley on a one-year deal.
