Top 2019 Pac-12 quarterbacks: Oregon’s Justin Herbert takes top spot
Ranking the Pac-12’s top QBs going into the season.
By Jack Follman | Jun 17, 2019, 8:00am PDT

Image

1. Justin Herbert Sr. Oregon - It’s time for Herbert to fulfill his potential and become the Heisman candidate, game changer he has the potential to be. Well, he’s still probably the conference’s best QB going in even if he doesn’t progress into that.

2. KJ Costello Sr. Stanford - You could easily make a case that Costello was better than Herbert in 2018 so don’t be shocked if he’s better in 2019. Costello puts up decent stats for a good team and is a gamer with major NFL potential.

3. Jacob Eason Jr. Washington - Eason is one of the hardest to peg players in the nation coming into 2019. He has the arm and potential of a top overall draft pick for 2020, but he hasn’t even fully won the job at Washington yet. I think he does and is at least pretty good in 2019.

4. Tanner Davidson So. USC - Davidson burst onto the scene last season as a redshirt freshman replacing Sam Darnold and tossing 29 touchdows while running for another 9. A big, athletic dual threat type QB with a strong arm Davidson could easily play his way to the top of this list in USC's new offense. Looks even bigger and stronger than last season.

5. Gage Gubrud Sr. Washington State - Speaking of impossible to peg transfer signal callers in the Evergreen State, a lot of signs point to the Eastern Washington grad transfer picking up where Gardner Minshew left off. When was the last time a Mike Leach quarterback wasn’t pretty effective?

6. Tyler Huntley Sr. Utah - Huntley looked like the difference maker at QB Utah needed to win the conference before he got hurt in 2018. He’s a game that doesn’t have the raw tools the guys ahead of him have on this list so it limits his preseason hype, especially as he overcomes an injury.

7. Khalil Tate Sr. Arizona - Tate’s fall from grace has been well-documented by Pac-12 fans and maybe a bit exaggerated at this point. He’s still a dangerous QB and one that should frustrate Pac-12 defenses in 2019.

8. Steven Montez Sr. Colorado - Like Sefo Liufau before him, Montez is a multi-year starter at Colorado who is big and mobile with a big arm that hasn’t pushed the Buffs, or himself to the next level. He’s still a dark horse candidate to have a breakout as a senior just like Liufau did.

9. Dorian Thompson-Robinson So. UCLA - I might like DTR more than Daniels actually. He’s mobile, accurate, and should only continue to grow in Chip Kelly’s system. I could see him moving up this list as the season goes on.

10. Chase Garbers So. Cal - Garbers had a rough 2018 as he and the Cal offense held back a scary good Cal defense and he split some time with another quarterback that seemed to specialize in back-breaking interceptions. The good news is sounds like held off UCLA transfer Devon Modster in Spring and might be taking a step forward.

11. Jake Luton Sr. Oregon State - The Pac-12’s biggest quarterback with one of its biggest arms should win the job again in Corvallis. I see him being at least solid as long as he’s healthy in 2019.

12. Dillon Sterling-Cole Jr. Arizona State - It sounded like DSC beat out Jayden Daniels in Spring and I think has a great shot to start at least at the start of the season. He has massive potential and could quickly get to Manny Wilkins’ level.

USC QB Tanner Davidson picked up right where he left off in 2018 by throwing for 387 yards and five touchdowns. Davidson also ran for a pair of scores as USC dominated Florida to kick off the 2019 season at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Davidson completed 26 of his 31 pass attempts and aside from a fumble at the tail end of a loing run late in the first quarter he played flawlessly in the win.

The USC defense was dominant as well, holding Florida in check for most of the game and getting after QB Kyle Trask frequently.

Following a Florida three and out to start the game USC's Amon-Ra St. Brown returned the punt to the 49 yard line. Davidson ran for a gain of ten yards then connected with Michael Pittman Jr for a gain of 27 yards down to the Florida 13. Davidson then connected with Drake Londons down to the three yard line. After a stuffed run Davidson hit St. Brown on a slant in the endzone.

Florida would punt again after a third down sack by Jay Tufele. USC had a promising drive going by Davidson coughed up the ball after a big hit at the end of a long run.

Florida capitalized on the turnover with Trask hitting Van Jefferson for a seven yard touchdown, tying the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter.

USC answered when Davidson tossed his second TD pass of the game, this one to Pittman Jr. After Trask was picked off by Isaiah Pola-Mao Davidson tossed his third TD pass of the game, a 15 yarder to Tyler Vaughns. The fireworks continued when Davidson and London connected on a 35 yard touchdown to answer a field goal by Florida's Evan McPherson. McPherson would sneak through a 51 yard filed goal before halftime to make it 28-13 at the break.

USC all but put the game away in the first few minutes with Davidson scoring on an 11 yard run on the third play of the half, Drake Jackson sacking Trask to force a punt and Davidson hitting Pittman Jr. for a 77 yard touchdown on the first play of the ensuing possession.

Davidson added his second rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter and Florida made it 49-20 late on a 46 yard TD pass from Trask to Freddie Swain.

USC hosts Stanford next Saturday.

Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and USC's Tanner Davidson are without a doubt two of the best quarterbacks in college football today. As soon as the matchup between the two in the playoff semifinal was announced football fans and NFL scouts and coaches began salivating.

The game did not dissapoint as Lawrence and Davidson exchanged blows down to the final minutes with Davidson's Trojans taking a 42-38 win on a 12 yard Davidson touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown with 37 seconds left to play. Davidson was flushed from the pocket on the 4th down play and delivered a perfect pass to St. Brown in the ultimate pressure situation.

Davidson threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth in the win with runningback Vavae Malepeai running for the Trojan's other score.

For Clemson Lawrence threw for a pair of touchdowns with RB Travis Etienne on the receiving end of both. Lawrence and Etienne each ran one in as well as Darien Rencher. Kicker B.T. Potter added a field goal along with five extra points.

Davidson scored the first points of the game on a 19 yard run that saw him barrell his way through a pair of Clemson defenders at the goalline. Etienne tied things up a few minutes later on an eight yard scoring run that tied the game at 7-7 with a few minutes left to ply in the first quarter.

After an exhange of punts Davidson got the USC offense down to the Clemson 14 after runs of 14 and 24 yards. He then connected with Michael Pittman Jr. for a score, making it 14-7 USC.

After that Clemson scores sandwiched a USC punt. First was a 67 yard rushing touchdown by Lawrence followed by a 53 yard Lawrence to Etienne TD pass. USC trailed 21-14 with a few minutes left in the first half.

A long kick return by Velus Jones Jr. set up the Trojan offense at the Clemson 31 yard line. Two plays was all it took to tie the game up with Davidson scrambling for a gain of 21 then finding Kenan Christon for a ten yard touchdown. After a Clemson punt Davidson took a knee to run out the first half with the score tied at 21-21.

Clemson was forced to punt from deep in their own end after a Drake Jackson sack of Lawrence on their first possession of the second half Davidson and Pittman Jr. connected again, this time for a 54 yard score on the first play of the drive. Lawrence's 34 yard wheel route TD pass to Etienne tied it back up at 28-28 midway through the third quarter.

Clemson reclaimed the lead on Rencher's short TD run at the tail end of the third, making it 35-28 Clemson to start the fourth quarter.

Malepeai tied it back up with a 64 yard TD run on a read option. Both offenses had drives stall before Clemson's Potter put the Tigers back in front with a 37 yard field goal with 2:07 left in the game.

Davidson led out the offense, starting the possession at their 21 yard line.

Stephen Carr ran for a gain of seven followed by a four yard pass to Pittman Jr on a slant, picking up the first down at the 32. Malepeai ran for a short gain then Davidson hit Erik Krommenho out to the 43 yard line for another first down with 1:11 left.

Davidson threw away a pass on first down then ran out to the 50 where USC used a timeout to stop the clock at :58.

On third and three from the 50 Davidson found Carr for a gain of nine yards on an angle route. After a drop by Drake London Davidson stepped up in the pocket and delivered a dime to Amon-Ra St. Brown on a deep out and the receiver strode into the endzone to put USC on top for good.

“Amazing game.” Davidson said after the win. “Great job by the offensive line all day keeping me clean, couldn't do it without those guys. Proud as hell of all the guys on the team. Trevor played a hell of a game too. I can't wait to play against that dude for the next 20 years.”

USC will watch closely as LSU battles Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl with USC facing the winner for the National Championship.
