‣ NFL 2023 Regular Season, Week 15 - Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, Nevada

Chargers lose Ekeler but don't miss a beat as they handle Raiders
Despite Bo Melton's best efforts -- yes, Bo Melton -- the Los Angeles Chargers were able to put away their AFC West rival and beat the Las Vegas Raiders 41-27 on Thursday night to keep pace in the wild card race.
The Raiders did their best to make it competitive without top receiver Davante Adams, who was a last minute inactive due to a wrist injury he suffered in practice. Replacing Adams in the starting lineup was a surprising name in Melton, a former seventh round pick that the Raiders claimed off the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad nearly two months ago.
Melton opened the second half with a 53-yard catch that led to a Raiders field goal and then scored a 13-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Raiders first touchdown of the game to make it 27-13. After a Chargers three-and-out on offense, Melton had catches of eleven and thirteen yards with the latter coming on 3rd and 7 to place the ball on the Chargers one-yard line where Zamir White would punch it in to make it a one score game.
Melton, in his first career start, led the game with 11 receptions for 144 yards with 50 of his yards coming after the catch.
Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense never let the Raiders get too close, scoring on the next drive thanks to a 30-yard designed quarterback run and then Herbert finding Keenan Allen for the touchdown with 3:03 remaining.
Herbert completed 26 of 34 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns leading the team in rushing with 73 yards on the ground as they were without Austin Ekeler who left the game in the first quarter with an injury.
The Raiders would go four and out on the next drive, giving the Chargers a short field to punch in their last touchdown of the night. The Raiders would score on their final possession to tighten the score as Garoppolo wrapped up his day completing 57 percent of his passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns with a pick-six thrown to J.C. Jackson.

Once a punchline, Dak Prescott has the Dallas Cowboys on the verge of punching their playoff ticket
With a 21-7 loss to the New York Giants in a game where Dak Prescott threw two interceptions and threw for just 209 yards, many were ready to write off the Dallas Cowboys and consider the division to be a two-team race between the Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles. Since then, Prescott has thrown at least three touchdowns in four of the Cowboys five games, all wins to put them atop the NFC East as they head into the final stretch of the season.
Dallas beat Buffalo 28-27 this past Sunday with Prescott completing 71 percent of his passes and throwing for 298 yards and three touchdowns. While the Cowboys are surging, the Eagles are not, losers of six straight to put themselves out of the current playoff picture. New York is a game behind with two games against Philadelphia in the final three weeks with the Los Angeles Rams sandwiched between them.
The Cowboys, who split the season series with the Giants, play in Miami and in Washington to end the season with a home stand against Detroit in week seventeen.

Raiders playoff hopes become bleak but not non-existent following loss to the Chargers
With their loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Las Vegas Raiders have the closed the door on themselves winning the AFC West as it'll be decided between the Chargers and the 12-2 Kansas City Chiefs, who currently sit atop the AFC standings.
All hope isn't lost as the Raiders can still make the playoffs as a wild card, they just need some help from other teams and particularly themselves.
It starts this week with a matchup against the Chiefs in Arrowhead, arguably the Raiders toughest game of the season. The Raiders have not only improved from last season's six win season but they've also been competitive in nearly every game with one-score losses to the Patriots, Miami, and Kansas City and even had chances to make it competitive in both Chargers game and against Buffalo.
Close won't be enough on Monday when they play Kansas City in another standalone game, their sixth of the season. They are 4-1 in those games with their first primetime loss coming against Los Angeles last week.
The Raiders end the season at Kansas City, at Indianapolis and at home against Denver with two winnable games at the end, if they can get past the Chiefs. The Chargers have a tougher schedule, beginning this week against Buffalo, on the road against Denver and at home against Kansas City. Since the Chargers already hold the tie breaker with the Raiders, the Raiders need to win all three games and have the Chargers lose all three in order to leapfrog them.
The other team to look at is Pittsburgh, who the Raiders to have the tie breaker over thanks to their head to head win at the beginning of the year. Pittsburgh hosts Cincinnati this week and then are on the road against Seattle and Baltimore, ending their season with three playoff caliber teams. This is the Raiders most feasible path to the playoffs as they only need to finish 2-1 or better and have the Steelers lose out OR finish 3-0 and have the Steelers finish 1-2.
‣ What do you do about Bo Melton?
In his first extensive NFL game, Bo Melton did something no other Raiders receiver not named Davante Adams or Tre Tucker have done this season and that's go for over 100 yards.
The former practice squad receiver had a day for the ages against Los Angeles, catching 11 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown in what was essentially his career debut. A former seventh round pick with the Seattle Seahawks, Melton spent the 2022 season on the Green Bay Packers practice squad and started this season on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad where the Raiders signed him after trading Hunter Renfrow to the New Orleans Saints.
With Davante Adams back healthy and practicing, it'll be interesting to see what the Raiders do with Melton and if he's just a flash in the pan that will soon be forgotten in a few weeks.
Jakobi Meyers played 59 snaps against the Chargers and caught zero passes, his second straight week of a donut stat line after playing 66 snaps against the Vikings the week before and failed to catch a pass. Do you bench him in favor of Melton, even if he's owed $12.8 million next season and the year after?
‣ Raiders DC Patrick Graham encouraged by performance against Chargers, cites the need for more disruptive plays on defense
The Raiders are ranked dead last in total defense and passing defense, bottom five in scoring defense and middle of the pack against the run. This late into the season, a drastic change isn't to be expected but defensive coordinator Patrick Graham still sees room for improvement and is hopeful that it will come.
"I thought we did a better job in coverage this week," Graham told the media after the defense gave up 285 yards passing against the Chargers, a massive improvement after surrendering over five hundred yards to Kirk Cousins the week before, "We still need to limit the explosive plays on defense and create some ourselves, whether that be turnovers or sacks or generating pressure."
The Raiders lead the league in sacks but are tied with the Vikings with just three interceptions in the NFL, the least amount in the league. They have recovered four fumbles, third most in the league, but that still puts them 31st in terms of takeaways.
For a defense that is going to surrender a ton of yards and at times points, the only counter balance will be those turnovers and they'll need them in bunches to have a chance against the Chiefs who have the third fewest giveaways in the NFL with five on the season.

‣ NFL 2023 Regular Season, Week 16 - GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
(8-6) Las Vegas Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs (12-2)
LV | 0 | 10 | 3 | 7 | 20

Kansas City completely dominates Las Vegas in 44-20 drubbing
It was once again Bo Melton, an unlikely name, that was giving Las Vegas Raiders fans hope with a touchdown before the end of the half to make it a ten point game and then Raiders then opened the second half with a field goal.
It would be their last score before the four minute mark in the fourth quarter while the Kansas City Chiefs scored three touchdowns in the interim, blowing out the Raiders 44-20 to win the thirteenth game of their season and clinch the AFC West title.
Mahomes overcame a slow start where he completed just one of his first six passes before heating up and finishing the game 34 of 48 for 398 yards with a touchdown pass. The Raiders once again had no answer for the Chiefs running game as Isiah Pacheco rushed for 155 yards, breaking loose for a 70-yard in the fourth quarter.
Pacheco had missed most of the first meeting with the Raiders due to injury so it was Jerick McKinnon who rushed for 136 yards against the Raiders earlier in the season. McKinnon carried the ball just twice on Sunday but both went for touchdowns.
The Raiders did a good job of limiting Travis Kelce once more, who caught 3 passes for 34 yards after having 3 catches for 36 yards in the earlier meeting. By doubling Kelce, however, it opened up the passing game for Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the middle of the field who had 11 receptions for 173 yards and a touchdown. Rashee Rice was also heavily involved with 7 receptions for 66 yards.
Offensively, Las Vegas handed the ball off to Josh Jacobs five times, a season low in carries. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 16 of 31 passes for 171 yards with an early interception and a touchdown to Melton before the end of the first half. With the game out of hand, rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell entered the game in the fourth quarter, throwing for 103 yards and a touchdown to Davante Adams.
Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels reiterated after the game that Garoppolo wasn't benched due to performance.

Derrick Henry carries Tannehill-less Titans to the brink of winning the AFC South title once more
Despite being without starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill for the past five games, the Tennessee Titans' win over the Seattle Seahawks granted them sole possession of the AFC South.
Rookie quarterback Will Levis had perhaps his best day as a pro, completing 64 percent of his passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. In the previous two starts -- both losses -- he completed less than 50 percent of his passes and combined for two interceptions, no touchdowns and was sacked six times. Even in the 24-21 win over Indianapolis four months ago, Levis threw for just 85 yards.
It was running back Derrick Henry that has kept them afloat through those lean passing days, scoring two touchdowns in the win over the Colts and rushing for 115 yards against Seattle. He also caught four passes for 34 yards.
On the season, Henry is averaging 100.3 yards per game and five yards per carry, leading the NFL in rushing with 1,505 yards with the second most carries at 303. This has been accomplished not only without an effective passing game but more impressively without a single explosive run as Henry's longest run of the season remains a twelve yard gain.
It could be argued that Henry's success this season has perhaps led to both Saquon Barkley and Jonathan Taylor signing respective deals with their teams this week with Taylor re-upping with the Colts for $38.2 million over four years while Barkley, who is second in the league in rushing, signed a three year, $38 million deal with the Giants.
Instead, Henry has continued to be one of the most consistent forces in the NFL, plotting along the AFC South battlefield and towards yet another divisional title for King Henry.

Raiders sign veteran linebacker Landon Collins ahead of final two game stretch of the season
The Las Vegas Raiders have signed linebacker Landon Collins to their active roster for the rest of the season, releasing cornerback Brandon Facyson.
Ironically, the Raiders had put in a waiver claim for former New York Giants linebacker Micah McFadden who was waived as one of the many moves the Giants made to clear up cap space for their $38 million extension to running back Saquon Barkley (more on that later). The Atlanta Falcons had priority on the waiver wire and ended up signing McFadden, releasing Collins as a result which made him available to the Raiders.
Collins crossed paths with Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham during their time with the Giants when Graham as the defensive line coach in 2016 and 2017.
The former second round pick safety has primarily played linebacker the past few seasons for the Washington Commanders, the Giants last season in his second stint and the Falcons this past season. On the season, Collins has 70 tackles, two tackles for loss and two interceptions.
With just two games left, it remains to be seen how much of an impact Collins ultimately has as he tries to pick up the playbook in time for the Indianapolis game this week and Denver next week with the Raiders needing to win out in order to have any chance of making the playoffs. Pass coverage from the linebacker position has been an issue all season for the Raiders but this late into the year, it might be too little, too late.
‣ Saquon Barkley, Jonathan Taylor's deals provide a template for Josh Jacobs, Raiders front office
According to reports, there have been no communication between star running back Josh Jacobs and the Raiders front office on an extension since Jacobs returned to the team before the start of the regular season on the franchise tag.
Jacobs, 25, is currently set to enter free agency after this season, averaging nearly 95 rushing yards per game the past two seasons with no fumbles. With Saquon Barkley and Jonathan Taylor both signing extensions, Jacobs will likely be the top running back on the market if the Raiders are unable to come to an agreement with their leading rusher.
Barkley got a higher salary while Taylor got the longer, more secure deal with it being a four-year deal compared to Barkley's three-year with both totaling around $38 million.
Ultimately, the number that matters most to the team is the cap hit and to the player, it's the guaranteed money. Barkley's cap hit in 2024 is a manageable $12 million and it rises to $13.4 million in the last year of the deal with $28.7 million being guaranteed. Taylor starts out at $8.76 million next season and rises to $10.4 million in 2027 with $25.26 million in guaranteed money.
Both contracts pail in comparison's to Dalvin Cook's 5 year, $63 million contract in terms of total number but had similar guarantees with Cook receiving $28 million in guaranteed money from the Minnesota Vikings' at the time. Could Jacobs be looking for a similar contract, closer to that $14 million average per year where Derrick Henry and Christian McCaffrey currently reside?
‣ Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers' losses keep Raiders playoff hopes alive
Even with the embarrassment against the Kansas City Chiefs last week, the Raiders can still -- somehow -- make the playoffs thanks to both the Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers losing their games.
They now officially need to win out to make the playoffs, which was likely always going to be the case after losing to the Chargers two weeks ago. They also need the Chargers and/or Steelers to lose the remainder of their games and need two of Buffalo, the New York Jets and New England to at best, split their last two games.
The Raiders have the favorable schedule, playing the Colts and the Broncos who aren't playing for anything. The Chargers play the Broncos this week but the Chiefs next week while the Steelers are on the road against Seattle and Baltimore to end their season. New England is at Buffalo and at home against the Jets with the Bills ending their season at Miami and the Jets playing Cleveland this week.
