Definitely outside of the norm of my typical chise. I saw the Seahawks as a wild card team but man their offense is one of the most explosive in the NFL - the defense is coming around too at such a perfect time. SUPER BOWL LET'S GO!

// The Super Bowl runs through Seattle, and it couldn't be any more important against San Francisco
// BY TERRENCE ROBINSON

RENTON, Wash. - When the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC divisional round, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll wasn't sitting at home watching the game. He was in his office, watching as the Niners just shredded one of the league's best defenses for 44 points while his team was getting ready to face the Dallas Cowboys.

Carroll admitted it wasn't the best thing to do the night before the NFC divisional game, but he wanted to know who his team was going to face on that very night. Yes - the Seahawks coach was already looking ahead, even though he's preached to his team throughout the season to focus on the then and now, which at the time was Dak Prescott and the Cowboys. He even said he could barely sleep.

"Two or maybe three hours at best." The Seahawks would go on to defeat Dallas to advance to the NFC Championship game and face their bitter rivals.

Who knows if Carroll will even be able to sleep before the Seahawks face their bitter division rival on Saturday afternoon at Lumen Field for the second time this season. The 72-year old joked that at his age, it's probably a good idea to get "at least 1 or 2 good hours in." Carroll may be the oldest head coach in the NFL, but he moves around the field as much as any head coach in the NFL would, and that same energy can be seen in his players. They'll need their coach to have that energy against San Francisco.

The Seahawks were 1 game shy of earning a first-round bye and automatic home field advantage through the playoffs, with that right going to the Eagles in Week 17 after Seattle lost to the Arizona Cardinals. The Niners delivered Seattle their third consecutive home game of the playoffs, which is where they want to be - right in front of their raucous home crowd, famously known as the 12s.

Known as the "swat heard around the world," Richard Sherman's batted pass led to an interception that sent the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl 10 years ago.

It has been exactly 10 years since the Seahawks defeated the Niners in the conference championship game with the swat heard around the world. They would eventually go on to defeat the Denver Broncos and win their first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. Will Seattle be able to replicate what was done a decade ago?

To give some context, the only men remaining from that Super Bowl-winning team are Carroll and linebacker Bobby Wagner, who was drafted by the Seahawks just one season prior to the team's Super Bowl run. He's put together a Hall of Fame career since and very much knows how important this game not only means to the Seahawks, but to the city of Seattle.

"There's no love between us and them on the field, and I say that with the utmost respect. We're going to go at each other's throats until the whistles blow, and that's how it's always been between Seattle and San Francisco. We know what is on the line and are going to throw everything we've got against them. There's no way we want to see them in the Super Bowl instead of us...eliminating them would make the win that much sweeter."

The Seahawks briefly meet in the locker room before heading to the field for early warmups.

For the Niners, the win over Philadelphia takes care of last season's loss to the same Eagles team in the NFC Championship game that denied Kyle Shanahan and his team their second Super Bowl appearance in 4 years. Now it's onto SeaTac, the place where the Niners' team airplane will land prior to traveling to their team hotel for the week ahead, and confidence his high. San Francisco crushed the Seahawks in last year's wild card game, but wide receiver Tyler Lockett is expecting a much closer outcome this time.

"I don't think they'll be having the same result as last year, especially not in Lumen [Field]." Seattle defeated San Francisco by 2 points at home earlier this season before losing to them by 6 just a few weeks later in Santa Clara. The Seahawks have lost at home just once this season and are looking for the 12s to pull through again with what could be record-breaking noise levels.

// NFC Championship Preview: San Francisco
// BY JEANIE ROTH

SEATTLE, Wash. - Round 3 between the Seahawks and 49ers is for a trip to Las Vegas to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LVII.

49ers Key Performers
  • QB Brock Purdy: 3,736 yards, 29 touchdowns, 9 interceptions
  • HB Christian McCaffrey: 1,299 yards (3rd in NFL), 9 touchdowns // 335 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns
  • HB Elijah Mitchell: 563 yards, 13 touchdowns (T-3rd in NFL)
  • WR Brandon Aiyuk: 1,301 yards (5th), 15 touchdowns (2nd in NFL)
  • LB Fred Warner: 135 tackles (T-11th in NFL), 7 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 10 interceptions (1st in NFL)
  • LB Dre Greenlaw: 135 tackles (T-11th in NFL), 7 TFL, 1 sack, 2 interceptions
  • DE Nick Bosa: 46 tackles, 14 TFL, 9.5 sacks
  • CB Charvarius Ward: 66 tackles, 5 interceptions

It's been San Francisco's offense that has led them to both of their playoff wins this year, scoring 68 points in 2 games combined. They are currently riding high on the momentum train after eliminating the NFC's 1st seed, the Philadelphia Eagles, from Super Bowl contention last week, scoring 44 points in the overtime win. Brock Purdy's regular season stats may not be anything eye-opening, but in the Niners' two playoff games, the quarterback has thrown for 639 yards, 7 touchdowns, and just 2 interceptions. He and the 49ers are getting hot at the right time...they have won 6 of their last 7 games, with Purdy throwing 21 touchdowns during the seven-game span.

Christian McCaffrey has yet to find much room to run in the wild card and divisional playoff games, but the running back can explode at any moment given his regular season success on the ground. In two playoff games, McCaffrey's ran for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns, averaging 3.3 yards per carry. Brandon Aiyuk has elevated his game to the next level this season, finishing 5th in the NFL in receiving yards and 3rd in touchdowns. Statistically, Deebo Samuel (673 yards, 3 touchdowns) and George Kittle (650 yards, 6 touchdowns) have not stood out, but they are also capable of putting up big stat lines. Samuel recorded a season-high 14 receptions and 178 yards in last week's victory over Philadelphia.

The strength of the 49ers defense lies within their linebackers - Fred Warner set an NFL record for most interceptions by a linebacker in one season with 10, and both he and Dre Greenlaw lead the team with 135 tackles. After a shaky regular season, the Niners have rallied to provide themselves an opportunity to go back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 3 seasons.

Keys to the Game
  • Containing the threat of Christian McCaffrey in the passing game
    McCaffrey will get his yards on the ground when the Niners feed him, but the Seahawks can't let the running back go crazy catching passes out of the backfield. Bobby Wagner and Devin Bush have proven themselves capable as coverage linebackers and will likely track McCaffrey if he comes out of the backfield or lines up at receiver along with Jamal Adams, Quandre Diggs, and several others. McCaffrey has been one of the main reasons why San Francisco has scored the 6th-most points this year.
  • Getting the running game back on track
    Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet also haven't found much success running the football after crushing it in the regular season - Charbonnet is averaging 3.7 yards per run and Walker 4.1 yards per carry in the playoffs, well below their season averages, and that may have to do with playing 3 backups on the offensive line. It may be one of those games again where the team with the most possession time prevails, and the Seahawks will need their running backs as well as their offensive line to be at their best against the 49ers' front seven. Center Evan Brown is back this week.
  • Making Purdy uncomfortable all day
    The quarterback from time to time has flashed his skills as an improviser, and over this season the Seahawks defense have not had their best moments against mobile quarterbacks, with the exception of the Ravens' Lamar Jackson. In addition to Uchenna Nwosu's pass rushing ability, Seattle also found a late bloomer in 2nd-year linebacker Boye Mafe, who recorded 5 sacks in the Seahawks' last 3 games of the regular season. The Seahawks are fast everywhere, which will be important for stopping Purdy from escaping the pocket and making plays with his legs.
