Nix, Broncos hold off late Titans rally in season opener
Bo Nix looked comfortable leading Denver’s offense into a new season. The second-year quarterback accounted for three touchdowns as the Broncos built an early lead and held off a late rally from rookie Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans, winning 27-17 on Sunday at Empower Field.
Nix directed three scoring drives in the first half, highlighted by a 39-yard touchdown strike to Courtland Sutton and a six-yard scramble into the end zone just before halftime. His second rushing score, an eight-yarder late in the fourth quarter, put the game out of reach after Tennessee had clawed back.
Ward, making his NFL debut, endured a rocky start with two interceptions but settled down after the break. He connected with Chigoziem Okonkwo for Tennessee’s first touchdown in the third quarter and later found Calvin Ridley from 13 yards out with 41 seconds left. The rookie also showcased mobility, extending plays and keeping drives alive with his legs.
