LSU Dumps Strong After Two Seasons
LSU finishes season with 4-8 record, unranked
By Karl Belcher | Jan 9, 2017, 12:15pm EST

In two seasons at LSU Charlie Strong has managed just nine wins while losing 15 games during that stretch. 2016s 4-8 campaign was enough for the administration to send Strong packing.

Other big moves on the coaching front are Auburn moving on from Gus Malzahn after four seasons. Malzahn compiled a 25-26 record in his time with the Tigers.

Noel Mazzone is out after just one year at Louisville and Maryland, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Tennessee and Wisconsin are also looking for new coaches along with some other smaller schools. In all 15 schools will be looking for replacements.

Head Coaches Fired (2016 Record)
Auburn G. Malzahn (4-8)
Duke D. Cutcliffe (2-10)
ECU J. Niemann (0-12)
Georgia State S. Addazio (0-12)
Iowa State P. Rhoads (2-10)
Kent State P. Haynes (1-11)
Louisville N. Mazzone (2-10)
LSU C. Strong (4-8)
Maryland R. Edsall (4-8)
Oklahoma State M. Gundy (3-9)
Oregon State M. Riley (3-9)
SMU J. Jones (1-11)
Tennessee B. Jones (2-10)
Tulsa L. Spanos (3-9)
Wisconsin G. Anderson (5-7)

At this point that feels like a step down or at best a lateral move.

Louisville Hires Former Louisiana DC Johnson
Former UL DC was School's First Interview
By Karl Belcher | Jan 11, 2017, 2:15pm EST

"Great choice for them, great opportunity for Reggie. I'm extremely excited for him. It's always exciting to see your guys flourish." Louisiana head coach Porter Davis said when asked about his former defensive coordinator Reggie Johnson accepting the head coaching job at Louisville.

Johnson helped the Cajuns defense lead the nation in yards allowed, points allowed and rushing yards allowed while compiling a 13-1 record and an American conference championship.

Louisville has won just four games over the past two season and the administration is hopeful that Johnson will bring a winning attitude back to their program.

As for Davis he has reportedly spoken with representatives from a number of schools but has not made any public indication of his intentions.

Confirmed: Louisiana's Porter Davis Met with LSU
Two Time NCAA Coach of the Year was with AD and others “several hours”
By Carter Frederickson | Jan 13, 2017, 9:15am EST

Louisiana head coach Porter Davis has spent the past few days in Baton Rouge with LSU's AD Joe Alleva, who is also the school's vice chancellor. During their time together the two were joined by several boosters, current and former players and other members of the school's athletic programs and community.

The pair toured the city for nearly a full day yesterday, having lunch at Parrain's with a few boosters and former players and then taking in a LSU women's basketball win over Missouri last night.

While no official word has been released by either side a source inside the LSU athletic department revealed that there was an official meeting held yesterday that lasted “several hours”. The source indicated the meeting seemed to have gone well and that Davis and Alleva shook hands at the conclusion. Alleva reportedly said “Look forward to talking again soon.” to which Davis replied “Likewise.”

Davis has been the head coach at Louisiana for two seasons, compiling a 25-2 record with his only losses coming in back-to-back Rose Bowl losses to Nebraska and USC. He has won the NCAA Coach of the Year award both of those seasons. Before that he was Louisiana's defensive coordinator for a season and held the same position at Eastern Michigan in 2013. Davis played at Hofstra and Eastern Michigan.

Ross Dellenger from The Advocate stated that he expects an announcement regarding the hiring of Davis by LSU as early as Monday or Tuesday of next week but emphasized that neither side had confirmed anything official.

“It's just too perfect. Here's the best young coach in the nation, stacking wins in Lafayette, right in one of the biggest football school's backyard. There's no way they don't get him. No way.”

The timing may be as good as it gets for Davis as Louisiana had several starters finish up their careers last season including QB Brooks Haack and the top two runningbacks in Jalen Nixon and Kyle Hicks. The Cajuns defensive coordinator is also leaving to take the head coaching position at Louisville.

Davis has also reportedly had lengthy conversations with Auburn and Wisconsin regarding their head coaching vacancies. He has not met with either school in person. According to various sources other schools have contacted him as well but indicated that they have moved on in their searches as they feel they did not have a shot at hiring the sought after coach.

We will update this article as information becomes available.

Auburn Hires Hughes
Former Ohio State DC lands first head coaching job
By Karl Belcher | Jan 13, 2016, 1:01pm EST

Hank Hughes coached the defense that helped Ohio State win the National Championship and now he has a new job to show for it.

Auburn has announced that they have hired the former Ohio State and UConn defensive coordinator.

Hughes replaces Gus Malzahn who went 4-8 last season.

Hughes was with UConn from 2000 to 2014 in various roles including defensive coordinator before being hired by Ohio State prior to the 2015 season.

Ohio State finished ranked 10-4 and ranked 17th in 2015 then won the National Championship earlier this month.

Wisconsin, Tennessee Name New Head Coaches
Skip Holtz, Matt Wells make jump to Power Five schools
By Karl Belcher | Jan 13, 2017, 3:11pm EST

Yesterday former Louisiana Tech head coach Skip Holtz was announced as the new head coach for Wisconsin a couple hours ago.

Minutes later Tennessee's athletic department announced that they had hired Matt Wells, the former Arkansas State coach. Arkansas State finished with a 9-4 record in 2016.

Wisconsin fired former coach Gary Anderson after a 5-7 season and they hope Holtz can bring his dynamic offense north after coaching Heisman Winner Ryan Higgins who threw for over 5,300 and scored 59 total touchdowns. Louisiana Tech also had two receivers with over 1,000 yards.

Tennessee moved on from Butch Jones after a 2-10 season.

Also announced was Penn State's extension for Bill O'Brien. Penn State elected to stick with O'Brien despite a 5-7 season but his seat is likely going to be extremely hot in 2017.

Other hirings thus far are as follows:

Oklahoma State replaces Mike Gundy (3-9) with former Rice HC Matt Luke (7-6).

Oregon State has hired former Army OC Ian Shields to replace Mike Riley who went 3-9.

Former Eastern Michigan head coach Clay Hendrix landed the Maryland job replacing Randy Edsall (4-8 in 2016).

EMU replaced Hendrix with Mike Riley who was fired by Oregon State.

Chad Morris leaves the Clemson OC job for a head coaching gig at Rice, replacing Luke.

Louisiana Tech promoted OC Tony Peterson to head coach to replace Holtz.

Arkansas State replaced Wells with former Virginia OC Stan Hixon.

Jerry Kill left Idaho for East Carolina replacing Jay Niemann. Idaho tapped a local replacement in former Boise State OC Robert Prince.

Boise State also lost former DC Pete Kwiatkowski who replaces Paul Rhoads after a 2-10 season at Iowa State.

Noel Mazzone, who was fired as head coach by Louisville landed on his feet in the same position at Tulsa.

Kent State poached rival Miami of Ohio's defensive coordinator Dave Steckel to be their new head coach, replacing Paul Haynes after a 1-11 campaign in 2016.

Charlie Strong filled new Auburn head coach Hank Hughes' former role as Ohio State defensive coordinator.

Gus Malzahn was announced as the new OC at Clemson.

Florida State announced extensions for both coordinators, Rick Trickett and Jeremy Pruitt.

The biggest remaining opening is the head coach position at LSU. There have been rumors circulating that Louisiana head coach Porter Davis will be the Tigers next head coach but nothing official has been announced. Once LSU fills that role there should be a domino effect with the current openings at SMU and Duke being filled as well as the openings LSU's hiring creates rather quickly as National Signing Day approaches.
