Yesterday former Louisiana Tech head coach Skip Holtz was announced as the new head coach for Wisconsin a couple hours ago.
Minutes later Tennessee's athletic department announced that they had hired Matt Wells, the former Arkansas State coach. Arkansas State finished with a 9-4 record in 2016.
Wisconsin fired former coach Gary Anderson after a 5-7 season and they hope Holtz can bring his dynamic offense north after coaching Heisman Winner Ryan Higgins who threw for over 5,300 and scored 59 total touchdowns. Louisiana Tech also had two receivers with over 1,000 yards.
Tennessee moved on from Butch Jones after a 2-10 season.
Also announced was Penn State's extension for Bill O'Brien. Penn State elected to stick with O'Brien despite a 5-7 season but his seat is likely going to be extremely hot in 2017.
Other hirings thus far are as follows:
Oklahoma State replaces Mike Gundy (3-9) with former Rice HC Matt Luke (7-6).
Oregon State has hired former Army OC Ian Shields to replace Mike Riley who went 3-9.
Former Eastern Michigan head coach Clay Hendrix landed the Maryland job replacing Randy Edsall (4-8 in 2016).
EMU replaced Hendrix with Mike Riley who was fired by Oregon State.
Chad Morris leaves the Clemson OC job for a head coaching gig at Rice, replacing Luke.
Louisiana Tech promoted OC Tony Peterson to head coach to replace Holtz.
Arkansas State replaced Wells with former Virginia OC Stan Hixon.
Jerry Kill left Idaho for East Carolina replacing Jay Niemann. Idaho tapped a local replacement in former Boise State OC Robert Prince.
Boise State also lost former DC Pete Kwiatkowski who replaces Paul Rhoads after a 2-10 season at Iowa State.
Noel Mazzone, who was fired as head coach by Louisville landed on his feet in the same position at Tulsa.
Kent State poached rival Miami of Ohio's defensive coordinator Dave Steckel to be their new head coach, replacing Paul Haynes after a 1-11 campaign in 2016.
Charlie Strong filled new Auburn head coach Hank Hughes' former role as Ohio State defensive coordinator.
Gus Malzahn was announced as the new OC at Clemson.
Florida State announced extensions for both coordinators, Rick Trickett and Jeremy Pruitt.
The biggest remaining opening is the head coach position at LSU. There have been rumors circulating that Louisiana head coach Porter Davis will be the Tigers next head coach but nothing official has been announced. Once LSU fills that role there should be a domino effect with the current openings at SMU and Duke being filled as well as the openings LSU's hiring creates rather quickly as National Signing Day approaches.
