NCAA Approves, Fast Tracks Conference Changes
Big 12 goes back to 12 schools, creates trickle down
By Todd Fredericks | Jan 16, 2017, 5:17pm EST

Image

“It all started with a strong desire to get back to 12 teams in the Big 12. From there we saw a number of moves that made a lot of sense and despite the number of moving parts there weren't and significant hurdles.” NCAA president Mark Emmert explained as he revealed one of the biggest conference reshuffles ever done.

After deciding that the Big 12 needed to have 12 teams to continue to be considered one of the top conference Emmert says choosing those teams was not much of a challenge.

“Nebraska threw their hat in the ring almost immediately. We reached out to Colorado and the rest just fell into place. Jerry Jones was adamant that the new championship would be in Arlington and he was instrumental in making that happen.”

With Colorado and Nebraska on board for the move that left holes in the Pac 12 and the Big Ten.

“We had a few teams interested in filling both of those holes.” Emmert said. “For the Pac 12 San Diego State made quite a bit of sense so we were able to make that happen pretty easily.”

Things were a bit more complicated with the Big Ten, ultimately the conference decided that allowing Maryland to return to the ACC made the most sense, returning the Big Ten to 12 teams.

“Ideally, over the next few years, we'll get to a point where there are five top conferences with 12 teams each then the five mid level conferences, also with 12 teams. There will be a few independents and those mid level conferences will have an opportunity to move up to the higher conferences if one of those higher level teams is under-performing. Somewhat like the European soccer model. We're not quite ready to dive right into that but we're working on it.”

As for right now the Pac 12, Big Ten and Big 12 look like this:

Image

The next big move was to re-balance the ACC. Wake Forest and Boston College elected to depart after the announcement that Notre Dame would be joining. Maryland and Notre Dame join the Coastal division and the Atlantic division is unaltered.

Image

Wake Forest and Boston College were quickly welcomed in by the American conference. The American conference had also reached a deal bringing Army in as well. East Carolina announced their departure shortly thereafter. The conference re-aligned into a North and South format.

“One of the hurdles there was having to move the date of the Army Navy game into the middle of the season. Nobody was in love with the idea but we agreed to try it for this season at least.”

Image

ECU found a home in the Sun Belt conference.

Image

The Mountain West adds BYU to the Mountain division and Boise State shifts to the West division.

Image

The SEC, MAC and Conference USA stay the same as 2016.

Image

Massachusetts is now the only independent team, though with the upcoming plans to balance conferences they are likely to have company in 2018.

“We're very excited about this.” Emmert concluded. “It's a big change with lot's of moving parts and it took a lot of behind the scenes work by a lot of key individuals to pull this off and to keep it under wraps until we were ready. We're looking forward to this season and beyond with this alignment. It's a big day for NCAA football.”

Louisiana Finalizes and Releases 2017 Schedule
By Andrew Bernardi

“We’re extremely excited about this year’s schedule.” Louisiana head coach Porter Davis said as he stood in front of a large board that was concealed by a red cloth with the school’s logo on it.

“A lot of thought went into this to make sure we had a good mix of competitive and interesting games outside of out conference schedule.”

Davis revealed the conference games first, which were mostly already known but clarified the dates and times of each.

Louisiana opens conference play on September 30th against UConn at home. The Cajuns beat the Huskies twice in 2016 including in the conference championship game.

Next they travel to face Cincinnati on October 7th.
Then back home against South Florida on the 14th before a trip to Central Florida a week later.
Louisiana did not play Cincinnati or South Florida in 2016. They defeated UCF 27-7 on the road last season.

The Cajuns host SMU to wrap up October on the 28th. Then it’s back on the road to face Houston on November 4th. Louisiana beat both teams in 2016.

The regular season concludes with a home game against Tulsa and a road contest at Tulane on November 18th.

After discussing the conference schedule Davis then began to reveal the team’s 2017 non-conference schedule which consists of four games, all at the beginning of the season.

Davis first revealed their already known rivalry game against Louisiana-Monroe. That contest will take place at home on September 6th at 6:00pm.

Davis then revealed their season opener, a road game at Rutgers on August 26th.

Alabama-Birmingham will come to Lafayette on September 2nd,

The conferences are kind of strange but I'll be interested to see how you move teams in the future.

How is Rutgers ranked so high? Seems very strange to me.

LSU is for sure the circled game this year.

CB #1 AND LOUISIANA COMMIT JUSTICE BARNETTE

The Cajuns had an excellent National Signing Day, landing a quartet of key prospects including a pair of players ranked #1 at their positions.

The new recruits are:

Jacoby Browne
*** WR #138
6’1” 194
Fountain Valley, CA
Jacoby chose Louisiana over UCLA and Oregon, opting for a better shot at playing earlier in his career. Brown possesses great top end speed and has shown improvement in his hands over the past couple seasons in high school.

Lew Madigan
** MLB #87 (JUCO SO)
6’0” 249
Winnfield, LA
Lew is big and moves well for his size. He has played numerous defensive positions throughout high school and junior college. He is a solid tackler with good pop in his hits.

Justice Barnette
***** CB #1
5’11” 182
Chico, CA
Justice is the #1 CB in the nation and for good reason. He has great speed and quickness. He can make up a lot of ground quickly. Played CB and WR the past two seasons in Chico. Great vertical. Above average tackler for the position. Excellent in both man and zone coverage. Could play anywhere in the secondary.

Joey Christodoulou
*** K #1
5’10” 175
Joey has just average leg strength but is extremely accurate when within his range. Can place kick or punt well.

The previously committed players are as follows:

Avery Novak
**** QB #4
6'3" 203
Crown Point, IN
Avery is a dual-threat QB with good running skills and a solid arm. He threw for 2,300 yards and ran for 1,100 as a junior at Crown Point High School and is on pace to surpass both numbers this season.

Alvin Terrell-Thomas
**** RB #22
6'1" 192
Cleveland, MS
Alvin is a balanced, three down type back who has decent speed, elusiveness and tackle breaking abilities. He is serviceable as a receiver out of the backfield.

Dru Carlson
**** RB #23
6’1” 186
Brent, FL
A solid runner with inside speed and outside power, likely a redshirt candidate that can contribute in a year or two

Jon Elden
*** WR #188
5’11” 193
Burkburnett, TX
Elden is a decent route runner with solid hands. Not a straight line burner but he can make tacklers miss. Nicknamed “Man Rocket” by his high school teammates.

Marlon Carter
** #91 TE
6’5” 241
Nederland, TX
Marlon is current Cajuns receiver Justin Carter’s half brother. He is a great run blocker and an above average pass blocker. He has decent hands and solid speed.

Derek Dawson
** C #64
6'2" 301
Marrero, LA
Derek Dawson is a powerful run blocker and pulls well. He is the younger brother of Cajuns LB Christian Dawson.

Willie Davids
*** OT #23
6'2" 318
Hammond, LA
Willie is a balanced OL who uses his strength and agility to make space in the running game and hold off pass rushers equally well. He may be moved inside to guard.

Wilton Jack III
*** DT #31
6'1" 318
Monroe, LA
Wilton is a space eater in the middle as his size implies. He is adept at getting off blocks and has a quick burst.

Braxton Bray
*** DT #81
6'4" 254
Moberly, MO
Braxton is a strong inside presence who can play tackle or 3-4 end. He wraps and tackles well and gets off run blocks efficiently.

Marques Austin
*** OLB #32

Grambling, LA
Marques has above average strength and tackling ability and good athleticism. He reads and reacts well against the run and gets off blocks well.

Laurent DeJean
*** OLB #82
6'3" 196
Poydras, LA
Laurent is a strong tackler who reads and chases down plays and has a quick first step.

Sam Palmero
*** CB # 84
5'9" 172
Ponchatoula, LA
Sam is the younger brother of current Cajuns WR Seth Palmero. He is excellent in both man and zone coverage and covers ground well.
