Should be an interesting season. No QBs on my roster have thrown a pass. Top RB was my 4th running option last year. 3 new LB starters 3 new OL starters. New sliders. Playbook and scheme tweaks on both sides. Excited to lose some games.

Louisiana Spring Practice Report - Day One
By Kelly-Anne Russo
Image
DT DANIEL FRITZ HAS BULKED UP AND HAD #9 BESTOWED UPON HIM
There's not too much to report after just one day of spring practice for the Cajuns as the team mainly ran individual position drills. I do have a few notes of interest.

Defensive tackle Daniel Fritz has bulked up a bit. He also was awarded the #9 jersey that seems to be given to a top veteran DL or LB as of late. He was in a 0 or 1 technique frequently during linesman drills. The team is expected to use more three man fronts on defense this season.

D'Eriq Robinette, who was originally recruited as a QB but was listed as a WR last season worked almost exclusively with the QB group. Robinette, Jordan McAlary and freshman Avery Novak were the only three in the group today.

Marlon Carter, recruited as a TE, was with the RB group all day, presumably making the move to FB.

LB Sammy Douglas was wearing #4, another number that has seemed to be giving to a defensive leader as of late.

LB Jeremy Bailey has updated his helmet to a Revolution Speed model.

That's all I have of note after day one, expect more in-depth information over the next few days as the team moves into 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 drills in preparation for the upcoming spring game.

That's a very large man to be wearing #9.

Interesting to have Robinette move back to QB. Reminds me of Paul Thompson back in the day. Dude lost his job to Rhett Bomar so he played WR. Then the next year Bomar gets dismissed from the team with like 2 weeks before the opener. Thompson switches back to QB and leads us to the Big XII championship.

DT Christian Ringo wore 9 for a year or two so I've been trying to give it to key guys in the front 7 every year.

Robinette looked like he could be part of the WR rotation last season but training results for the upper classmen bumped him down so I redshirted him. Could have been in the mix at WR this year but I needed a third QB. We'll see what happens going forward with him.

Thanks for posting.

Louisiana Spring Practice Report - Day Two and Three

WR MIKEY PORTER SR SEPARATES AND CATCHES A PASS FROM COACH EDENFIELD
Quite a bit more to get to as we go deeper into the spring practice session. The past couple days have revealed quite a bit about what the team may look like for the 2017-18 season.

First another number change. CB Kelvin Greenwood has changed from 29 to 6. He has also switched to an Air XP helmet. He told me it felt lighter and fit better and he had more confidence in it's ability to protect him.

WR Justin Carter has also switched to the Air XP, he told me he is also using smaller pads this season. He has trimmed down and noticeably quicker.

There has been some position movement along the offensive line as the coaching staff looks to replace three departed starters from last year. Here's what I perceive the depth chart to look like based on a few days of drills and 11 on 11. I've also noted where they were listed on last season's initial depth chart. Obviously this could change.

LT Mitchell Murray (LT2) | Gavin Marshall (RT3)
LG Clifton Schmidt (LG1) | Derek Dawson (Freshman)
C Ryan Hoefeld (C1) | Kane Adams Davison (C2)
RG Michael Taylor (LG2) | Dion Ross (RG2)
RT Grant Horst (RT2) | Willie Davids (Freshman)

Murray, Taylor and Horst look to be the new starters and that group of five worked together the most. Marshall took some reps at each tackle position and Adams Davison took reps at both guard positions and center. The team apparently only has ten offensive linesmen and two of them are true freshmen so not a lot of depth here. Could become an issue if anyone goes down with an injury.

Horst has bulked up substantially and was getting much better push in the running game. He was listed at 258 last season.

One of the biggest transitions the team will be making is at the QB position, replacing Brooks Haack. Jordan McAlary, D'Eriq Robinette and Avery Novak have all taken roughly the same number of "first team" reps. McAlary appears to be the frontrunner. Robinette has made significant strides in improving his accuracy and is very fast. McAlary has not been active as a runner. They have yet to run any of their option plays with him at QB. Robinette has taken a few snaps at WR.

The team is also trying to replace their top two runningbacks from 2016. Joeseph Hollins III, Donatello Franz III, Bryan Jones and Cristian Bradley have all gotten significant work thus far. Bradley seems to be a bit slower than I remember. No clue on depth at the position at this time.

Fullback is also a position where the team is transitioning to a new starter. That looks to be Ryheem beach, though as I mentioned in my last report freshman Marlon Carter is working at the position as well. Beach looks to have put on some muscle and dropped some weight. He was moving defenders well when run blocking during 11 on 11 work.

At one point OC Kenny Edenfield showed some frustration with the QB group. I asked him about the loss of Matt Hayden.

"We're past that. We've got to work with the guys who are here. The guys who want to be here."

I'll have more in a couple days, focusing on the defensive side of things.

Louisiana Spring Practice Report - Day Four and Five
By Kelly-Anne Russo

LB BRANDON WILSON MAKES A TACKLE DURING LIVE 11 ON 11 DRILLS
A bit to unpack here as I get into my defensive notes from the past five days of spring practice. A number of players are working with different position groups and the multiple look scheme that Porter Davis and Brian Knorr are deploying makes things a bit murky as far as what positions players may be listed at.

Two moves that are pretty straightforward are that Brandon Wilson has moved from safety to linebacker and former linebacker Christian Dawson has moved up to defensive end.

“We're looking to replace some guys in that front seven and also to get some more speed on the field overall defensively.” Davis told me when asked about those moves.

Wilson has lined up as an outside linebacker when the team was in the base 4-3. He's played inside and outside in 3-4 looks and all over in the team's multitude of nickel and dime formations. He has bulked up and appears to be picking up the position change quickly. He looks to be the primary defensive play caller.

Dawson looks to be a ways down the DE depth chart as his reps in 11 on 11 have been limited.

The linebackers have been shuffled significantly and to try to put a position more specific than linebacker would be difficult at this time. Wilson, Jackson, Bailey and Collins seem to be taking most of the reps outside in the 4-3. Douglas, Adams and Lambreaux have been rotating inside. In other formations it has been a mix of several players in several different spots.

On the defensive line it has been a heavy dose of Daniel Fritz at tackle in both three and four man fronts. Jack, Bolden and Franklin have been rotating next to him in the four man fronts.

At defensive end it's been a mix of Miggins, Bolden, Reid and Paulsen primarily with Ridgeway and Symmons also getting some reps. There is good versatility at the position that allows them to use multiple fronts. This may be the deepest position on the team. Miggins has been a stand up outside linebacker in some of the three man fronts. He looks to have dropped a significant amount of weight and is quicker, faster and has looked difficult to pass block.

In the secondary there has been some changes as well. As a result of Wilson moving to linebacker it appears that Simeon Thomas will move into Wilson's former role where he is more likely to play closer to the line than deep. That being said they play with two deep safeties and man underneath a ton and Thomas is still dropping deep in that look. Thomas looks bigger and stronger but is still fast. Reginald McFadden has taken a number of reps at the position as well.

Tracy Walker has been taking most of the other safety reps with Palmer on the field as a third safety frequently. Walker was listed as a cornerback last season and was usually the third cornerback on the field. When Walker, Palmer and Thomas are all on the field it's typically Walker and Palmer deep with Thomas closer to the line. Walker has also played in man coverage with Palmer and Thomas over the top a bit too.

William Dailey has also appeared to move to safety.

At corner it's been Boudreaux and McCollum on the field in base defenses. Freshman Justice Barnett, Tracy Walker and Kelvin Greenwood have rotated in the nickel and dime looks. Boudreaux has bulked up a bit and looks a bit more willing to make tackles near the line of scrimmage.

I'll wrap this up with a few notes on special teams.

The team has three specialists in junior Jeffrey Yatkowski and freshmen Joey Christodoulou and Kobe Stephenson. Yatkowski has been the team's primary kicker and that doesn't seem to have changed. All three have been punting and it looks like Christodoulou and Stephenson are battling for that job.

I've counted at least twelve different players returning punts and kicks so I'll leave that alone for now.

The spring game is next week and I suspect I'll have much more to report after that.

If you have any questions about the pile of info I've put out this week or anything else post in the comments and I will answer them the best I can.

Lots of things happening. The QB spot is still the most important I think.
