Nevada finishes top five in the MWC in Jerome Singletary's transition class
Logan Finau -- Nevada247 Football Writer
It was a successful first signing day for Nevada head coach Jerome Singletary who managed to, in just a few weeks, hang on to Nevada's previous recruits during the transition and also add some new faces to the class, including four-star transfer Niles Thorne.
Thorne, the transfer from the University of Washington, was the third ranked player in the transfer portal and should be an instant impact player for the team. The Wolf Pack also targeted Thorne's former teammate, quarterback Terrance Levrone, who ultimately picked the Trojans over Nevada but the Wolf Pack were competitive in his recruitment, a clear sign that Nevada's recruiting should improve under Singleton.
Nevada's class is ranked fourth in the MWC and the transfer class is ranked second in the MWC behind only Wyoming but they are the only MWC team to sign a four-star transfer this cycle.

Biggest takeaway as spring football wraps up for Wolf Pack with free spring game
Jeff Longo -- Nevada Sports Net College Football Writer
Nevada head coach Jerome Singleton is making some changes and one of the first ones felt by fans was that Nevada's spring game this past Saturday was free and open to the public with season ticket holders getting priority tickets. Singleton has also made several practices open to the public and reporters in an effort to galvanize a fan base that saw some improvements last year as Nevada won seven games and made it to a bowl game but has yet to return to their heights under Chris Alt.
Some other notes from the spring:
Ryan Tauscher adjusting to life as a running back
Redshirt senior Ryan Tauscher has started twenty five games at the collegiate level at quarterback, including twelve in the SEC prior to transferring to Nevada from Vanderbilt. So when Singleton and offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen approached him about changing positions, it took Tauscher a few days to process it with Singleton allowing Tauscher to take some time away from football before returning to the team.
Since then, Tauscher has been a dynamic addition to the running back room and with former four-star quarterback Darian Molinaro in the backfield as well finally getting a chance after sitting behind Tauscher, it's a true pick-your-poison for defenses.
Tauscher rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown in the spring game and even with transfer addition Eric Leglue, Tauscher's speed stands out among the running backs and could very well be the Wolf Pack's top rusher this season.
Tauscher isn't the only person making a position switch as reserve offensive tackle Cal Costello has been working with the tight ends since midway through spring practices. Costello was Nevada's lightest offensive linemen at 283 pounds and has struggled to put on weight as a converted tight end so the switch back to tight end was a mutual decision according to Singleton and they view him as a potential impact player.
Safety Jermichael Hunter has also made the switch to corner.
The offensive line projects to be a strength
Nevada returns three starters on the offensive line in center DeMarco Dodge along with both offensive tackles Shaquille Golden and Zach Bee. The only two new additions is transfer Niles Thorne, who was a two-year starter at the Power 4 level with Washington and redshirt junior Harvey Cook who the coaching staff is extremely high on and had a very good camp.
They have some solid depth pieces in tackles Willie Morrison, Diego Angel and on the interior, Alani Fatafehi and Dylan Morton who haven't played a lot but are older guys that have been in a college strength and conditioning program for at least three years and should be equipped to handle spot snaps or spot starts in the event of an injury.
With a mobile quarterback and now a spark plug at running back in Tauscher, Nevada has the look of a team that could be dominant in the MWC when it comes to their rushing offense.
The defense should improve under Singleton
Singleton has done at every stop, starting with South Alabama and then Wisconsin where he was able to turn the defense around into an elite unit, doing it within his first season with South Alabama and by his second season at Wisconsin, the Badgers defense was among the country's best.
Singleton said he was impressed by Nevada's talent level on defense, even with the lack of experience and production. He called redshirt senior Clint Khaled a potential NFL guy and he showcased it in the spring game with three quarterback pressures.
The depth at corner is thin even with the addition of Hunter as Dell Hazelwood, who started thirteen games last season at corner, is switching spots and going to safety. But Singleton has proven that he can give opposing quarterbacks exotic looks on the backend to help make up for any deficiencies at corner.
