Patriots dominate from start to finish against Jaguars to potentially punch ticket into playoffs
Mac Jones went to high school eight miles from the Jacksonville Jaguars stadium and yet, his name was never mentioned when the team secured the number one overall pick for this past spring's draft. It was all but ordained that the honor would go to that of Trevor Lawrence and with just one game left on their rookie campaign, Jones has won the first round.
Jones threw for 319 yards, completing 68 percent of his passes in the Patriots' 36-7 whooping of the Jaguars on Sunday.
Jacksonville didn't score until the twelve minute mark of the fourth quarter, a favor Patriots cornerback J.C. Jackson quickly returned before the end of the game after getting beat for that touchdown by intercepting Lawrence and returning it for a touchdown.
The interception gave Jones and Lawrence almost identical stat lines on the day as well as brought Lawrence's turnover total on the season to nineteen with 24 total touchdowns. Jones had 24 as well with sixteen turnovers, a higher completion percentage and more passing yards.
The two quarterbacks are among the favorites to win Offensive Rookie of the Year along with Pittsburgh's Najee Harris and Cincinnati's Jamarr Chase.

Back where the season started, New England needs to take care of business against the directionless Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins opened their season with a road win in Foxborough against the New England Patriots to jump start their third season under former Patriots assistant Brian Flores. They would go on to lose their next seven straight games, had their franchise's reputation dragged through the mud during their pursuit of alleged sexual assaulter and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson and have still unanswered questions at quarterback, despite being winners of their last four games.
Since that season opener, New England has found their quarterback and their offseason investments might have netted them their second Defensive Player of the Year in three years while also being one win away from the playoffs.
The Patriots have notoriously struggled against the Dolphins on the road, going 9-11 since 2001 despite the Dolphins being one of the NFL's worst teams during that stretch while New England won six Super Bowls. Their last road win against the Dolphins in the month of December came in 2012 and since then, New England has lost their last four matchups against the Dolphins on the road in December.
They'll need to turn their luck around this Sunday or risk being on the outside looking in come playoff time. The Patriots are currently the fifth seed and if the playoffs started today, it'd be a rematch against the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo. Depending on Sunday's results, New England could end up as high as a third seed with a win and no less than a fifth seed. Here are the playoff scenarios with a win on Sunday:
3rd Seed in AFC
New England W at Miami
Las Vegas L vs. LA Chargers
Buffalo L vs. NY Jets
4th Seed in AFC
New England W at Miami
Buffalo L vs. NY Jets
5th Seed in AFC
New England W at Miami
The scenario is clear, win and you're in, leaving the rest of the games to play out to figure out just how high New England ends up in the seeding. With a loss, things get a bit tenuous. Here are the playoff scenarios with a loss on Sunday:
5th Seed in AFC
New England L at Miami
LA Chargers L at Las Vegas
Kansas City L at Denver
Cleveland L vs. Cincinnati
Pittsburgh L at Baltimore
6th Seed in AFC
New England L at Miami
Either LAC, KC, CLE or PIT Win with remainder losing
7th Seed in AFC
New England L at Miami
Two teams from LAC, KC, CLE or PIT Win with remainder losing
No playoffs
New England L at Miami
Three teams or more from LAC, KC, CLE or PIT Win
