Dolphins set to let several players walk in free agency
Godchaux, Roberts and Grugier-Hill re-signed
By djp73 | @djp73

The Dolphins will look a bit different in 2021 with several players leaving via free-agency. The team had nearly 20 players that they chose not to re-sign.

Linebackers Kamu Grugier-Hill and Elandon Roberts and defensive linesman Davon Godchaux were all re-signed to two year contracts this past week.

Dolphins pull trigger on Watson, send Tua to Texans
Disgruntled Watson “elated”, Tua “surprised, frustrated”
By djp73 | @djp73

When former Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson expressed his frustrations with the Texans organization and front office and indicated he would be interested in going to Miami there were some who said Miami should do whatever it took to make it happen and others who said they would be foolish to do so.

Ultimately, Miami's brain trust decided to try to make it happen.

In the end it cost them Tua Tagovailoa and some draft picks that have yet to be fully disclosed.

There was some speculation that the Dolphins weren't entirely sold on Tua because despite showing some flashes he was ultimately replaced in important games by Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was able to turn some of those games into wins.

“This is a move that improves our football team right now.” stated GM Chris Grier. “While you always want to keep the future in mind we feel that this is a great move for us. Deshaun is a Hall of Fame type quarterback in our eyes and he is only 25. We look forward to putting a strong team around him and competing for championships.”

Watson merely posted #elated on twitter after the news broke.

Tagovailoa was a bit more in depth, saying he was surprised and frustrated by the move but that he looked forward to the future and was excited to move forward.

Miami has a plethora of cap space and has already drawn interest from a number of veteran free agents who would like the climate, tax benefits and the opportunity to play with Watson and for head coach Brian Flores, who has already gained a good reputation among players.

Despite losing DeAndre Hopkins before the season Watson threw for a career high 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns against just seven interceptions while completing over 70% of his passes. He has thrown for 14,539 yards and 104 touchdowns in his four year career, making the Pro Bowl in each of the last three seasons.

Tagovailoa played in ten games, starting nine. He threw for 1,814 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions in his lone season in Miami.

Dolphins, Kaepernick announce signing
Kaepernick to backup Watson in Miami
By djp73 | @djp73

Just minutes after NFL free agency officially opened the Dolphins made their first of many expected splashes.

Since missing nine games as a rookie in 2017 Deshaun Watson has been relatively healthy, starting 16 games in 2018 as well as 2020 and 15 in 2019 as well as all three of the team's playoff games in that time.

Despite that both he and the Dolphins wanted to bring in a backup they were both comfortable with and thus the team has announced the signing of Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick last played for the 49ers in 2016 and has become a well known activist over the past several years. He has thrown for over 12,000 yards and 82 touchdowns during his career.

“This is a great addition to the QB room in terms of talent, leadership and experience.” Miami GM Chris Grier said after announcing the signing with Kaepernick and Watson.

Watson indicated that he had spoken to Kaepernick several times over the past few seasons and was the one to suggest exploring the possibility to Grier and Flores.

With Watson and Kaepernick in Miami along with the climate and the coaching staff and front offices' commitment to winning now the Dolphins should be a premium destination for free agents this offseason.

Former Steeler Le'Veon Bell headed to Miami
Dolphins add another piece in pursuit of championships
By djp73 | @djp73

Le"Veon Ball was a three time Pro Bowler and two time All-Pro during his five seasons as a Steeler. Bell ran for over 1,200 yards three times during that period and totaled 5,336 yards and 35 rushing touchdowns during that time. He also caught 394 passes for 3,259 yards and eight scores.

After sitting out all of 2018 he joined the Jets, rushing for just 863 yards and three scores in 17 games before he was ultimately released. Bell signed with Kansas City and appeared in nine games last season, rushing for 254 yards and two scores.

Bell is expected to be a key contributor in the Miami offense but both he and the Dolphins expect to use a runningback by committee approach this season with another being added in free agency and perhaps the draft as well.
