More drama with QB Cade Cannon, some feel 3 star could decommit
Cannon posted tirade on Instagram after Minnesota coaches asked him not to play basketball this winter

In a since deleted post on his Instagram 2013 3 star QB commit Cade Cannon accused the Minnesota coaching staff of changing the rules, being deceptive and hinted that he may be regretting his commitment to the Gophers.

The tirade was the result of the coaching staff asking him to forego his senior season of high school basketball, a sport he has been playing since he was five.

Jerry Kill, Matt Limegrover and Jim Zabrowski reportedly asked Cannon to get in the weight room this winter as opposed to playing basketball, possibly thinning out and risking injury.

Cannon planned to enroll early and already gave up his senior season of baseball in order to do so.

Efforts to contact Cannon and any of the Minnesota coaches have not yet been successful

We will monitor the situation and update when we can.

Checking in on Cade Cannon
Minor injury held him out of spring game, bulking up, learning the playbook, getting acclimated

By Blake Ruane | Apr 28, 2013, 1:42pm CST

After weeks of the coaching staff telling how excited they were at Cade Cannon's performance in spring practice he didn't dress for the spring game. Philip Nelson and Mitch Leidner took almost all of the snaps with Streveler dressed and Cannon in street clothes.

Offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover told us that Cannon has a minor injury that is nearly healed but that he wasn't quite at 100% so they elected to hold him out.

Cannon, who will redshirt, has been bulking up and learning the playbook nicely according to Coach Kill, Limegrover and QB coach Jim Zabrowski.

“It's been good, really good.” Cannon told me last week. “We talked about a redshirt year right from the start. It's best. I've been hitting the weights and learning how to do that effectively and efficiently instead of just throwing around weights. There's a lot to learn in the playbook so to think about how much I've learned so far and how much I can learn from watching games and game film has me pretty excited about 2014.”

Nelson looks to be the starter and Leidner will likely be his backup. After that it gets murky.

FORMER BISMARCK STAR DRAFTED BY TAMPA BAY

Image

by Jon Stamose | Jun 7, 2013 9:42 pm

Former Bismarck High School star Cade Cannon had his name called by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 40th round of the major league baseball draft earlier today. Cannon, who is currently at the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship, was one of the top high school baseball players in the state during the 2012 season as a junior.

“It's cool. It's an honor. Right now I'm focused on football and being the best QB I can be here at Minnesota.” Cannon replied via text when I asked him about being drafted.

“It's something I have a passion for and I hope to be able to pursue it again some day.” Cannon added.

Cannon will redshirt for the Gophers this year. Their football season starts in September. Cannon, who also played basketball at a high level for Bismarck, will not be playing any other sports at Minnesota.
