bro in real life Streveler started that SJSU game and went 1-7 and could not throw the football.

So of course he transferred to South Dakota and won MVFC Player of the Year.

Cannon sparks Gophers offense in return to lineup
Minneapolis, Minnesota -
Had it not been for an injury to Michigan QB Devin Gardner we would have been treated to a matchup between two of the most exciting dual threat QBs in the nation. Instead we got Cade Cannon against Shane Morris.

After a promising Minnesota opening drive stalled at the Michigan two yard line on a fourth and inches Coach Kill decided to go for it but the Michigan front stuffed Donnell Kirkwood for no gain, giving the ball over to Shane Morris and the offense with nothing to show for the Gophers. Michigan picked up one first down but then punted. Once again Cannon led the offense into the redzone only to be picked off by Michigan's Desmond Morgan at the goal line on a pass intended for TE Maxx Williams. Cannon certainly had better options but seemed to hone in on Williams on the play.

Michigan had possession to start the second quarter and picked up a pair of first downs before punting once again. Cannon ran for a gain of 13 then connected with Williams for a gain of 29. Kirkwood ran for six then Cannon hit Isaac Fruechte for 14. After an 18 yard pass to Williams put the Gophers on the goal line Cannon was sacked for a loss of ten yards. He bounced back on the next play and hit freshman WR Collin Branch for a ten yard TD in the middle of the endzone.

Michigan got on the scoreboard on their next possession with freshman kicker Sam Hicks connecting on a 28 yard field goal. Cannon and the Minnesota offense needed just four plays to answer. Cannon took off for a gain of 43 yards, making a pair of Michigan defenders look silly in the process. After a short run by Cannon he connected with Drew Wolitarsky for a gain of eight yards. On the next play Cannon scored on a 22 yard run on a read option.

Michigan turned the ball over on their next possession when Antonio Johnson popped receiver Damario Jones and forced a fumble which Minnesota defensive back Derrick Wells recovered. Minnesota ran the ball twice to run out the clock on the first half.

Michigan made it 14-10 on their first possession of the second half, scoring on a 26 yard Morris TD pass to Amara Darboh. Minnesota answered with a 17 yard Cannon TD run a few minutes later to put the Gophers up 21-10. The teams would go on to exchange punts. Minnesota's defense stopped Michigan on a fourth down then ran out the clock to secure the win.

Cade Cannon finished with 192 yards through the air on 17 of 26 passing with a touchdown and a pick. He was electrifying running the ball, picking up 202 yards and a pair of scores on 21 carries.

"He just gives us a spark, that x factor to use a cliche I guess." Michigan offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover said after the win.

Minnesota improves to 3-5 overall with a 1-4 Big Ten record. Michigan drops to 2-5/1-3.

Following a week off Minnesota will play at Illinois, the start of a three game road trip.

Gophers play tough but lose wild one at Kinnick
Iowa City, Iowa -
Iowa, ranked #6 in the nation and sporting an 8-1 record, had a lot to say leading up to their matchup against Minnesota. Bulletin board material included Iowa defensive coordinator claiming he would "zero blitz" every play because they weren't scared of Minnesota's "receiver playing QB."

While Iowa ultimately got the win they got much more of a challenge from Minnesota and Cannon than they bargained for.

After throwing a pick in the redzone on the Gophers first possession Cannon bounced back nicely, completing all three of his pass attempts and tossing a five yard touchdown pass to KJ Maye. Cannon also contributed a fifteen yard run on the drive. Minnesota's defense set up the possession by stopping the Iowa offense on a fourth down attempt. After another Iowa turnover on downs Cannon and the Gopher offense drove down to the Iowa one yard line. Cannon was stopped on a sneak but the offense got right back on the ball and ran a second sneak that was successful, taking a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Iowa's Damon Bullock put his team on the board with a two yard TD run with just over two and a half minutes left in the first half. Cannon completed six of seven pass attempts for 81 yards on the ensuing possession, capping the drive with an 11 yard TD pass to tight end Drew Goodger. Goodger caught the pass short of the endzone and destroyed an Iowa defensive back on his way to the endzone. One of the key plays on the drive was Cannon hooking up with freshman receiver Collin Branch for 26 yards. Branch laid out to secure the pass. It was the deepest pass we've seen from Cannon thus far and it was quite obvious that it caught the Iowa defense off guard.

Iowa took over with about a minute left in the half and cut Minnesota's lead to 21-14 with a Cody Sokol pass to Jake Duzey.

The Hawkeyes got the first possession of the second half and tied up the game with a short TD run by freshman fullback Antwan Wilson.

Facing a fourth and two near the 50 Minnesota elected to go for it and got one of their biggest plays of the game when Cannon kept on a read option and spun past an Iowa defender, picking up 37 yards before being brought down inside the Iowa 20. Cannon then connected with KJ Maye down to the two yard line, Cannon scored on a run on the next play to put Minnesota up 28-21. Iowa would punt to end their next possession and Cannon ran in for another TD just before the end of the third quarter, putting the Gophers up 35-21.

Iowa cut into the lead when Sokol hit Kevonte Martin-Manley for a 23 yard score early in the fourth. Things went a little haywire after that. Cannon had a pass tipped and picked off by Iowa, who went three and out quickly. Cannon was picked off again, leading to an Iowa score by Jordan Canzeri, tying the game with 1:34 left to play.

Cannon shook off the turnovers and went five of six for 56 yards and a touchdown to Maxx Williams, putting Minnesota on top 41-35 with under forty seconds left to play. Then, disaster as Ryan Santoso's point after attempt was tipped and clanked off the upright.

Sokol quickly got Iowa down to the Minnesota 26 with 13 seconds left. A quick pass put them on the 22 with five seconds left. Sokol threw to the endzone but the receiver dropped the pass. Two seconds left. Sokol dropped back and threw into a cluster of three Iowa receivers. Damond Powell turned and timed his jump perfectly, coming down with the game tying touchdown as time expired. After that it was up to Iowa's freshman kicker Brent Sims. Sims' kick was true and the Hawkeyes stormed the field while the Gophers soaked in the agony of defeat.

"A bad read. Period." Cannon said when asked about his third interception. "Can't do that in that situation or you lose games. Exactly what happened."

"Maybe not the best play calling." Matt Limegrover said of the sequence of plays that led to a pair of interceptions and ultimately game Iowa a chance to win.

"Not one play or one player." Jerry Kill said. "That's not how this game works. I think we played well for most of the game, didn't finish though."

Minnesota drops to 4-6 overall with a 2-5 record in conference. They'll need to close out the season with wins at Nebraska (6-4/4-3) and home against Purdue (3-7/1-6).

Cannon threw for a career high 321 yards on 27 of 34 passing. He also threw three touchdowns. He also ran for 182 yards and three scores on 13 carries. Had it not been for the pair of late interceptions it may have been an outstanding game for the redshirt freshman.
