He major-league ready if he ever learns how to hit the ball. Who am I kidding. Maybe he's destined for a career in the AAA's. The majors isn't for everyone after all... :troll:

Positives: runs like a gazelle.
Negatives: bats like a gazelle.

Cannon moved up to AA Montgomery

Blazing outfielder gets call up after showing improvement at the plate
By Scott Grauer | Jun 30, 2017 3:33pm

After a slow start at the plate Cade Cannon has improved his batting average enough to warrant a move up to Montgomery.

“We weren't looking for specific numbers.” Montgomery manager Brady Williams explained. “We were hoping to see some improvement in discipline and timing and the mental aspects of batting at that level.”

Cannon's real value is as a base runner and a fielder. The 22 year old stole 26 bases in 58 games with Bowling Green. He was caught stealing just once.

“Dude is crazy fast in the field and on the bases.” Teammate Josh Lowe said. “Definitely the fastest on the team, no question.”

Cannon batted .219 with 27 RBIs while primarily leading off. He hit 17 doubles, 2 triples and a home run. He was struck out 26 times and walked 17 times.

In the field Cannon recorded 107 put outs with 12 assists and no errors. He started 45 games in center field, 4 in left field, 2 in right field and pinch hit or ran in 7 more.

“His base running ability and awareness are the best I've seen at this level. Maybe at any level really.” One minor league scout told us.

Josh Lowe was referring to him as the fastest in Bowling Green. Mallex Smith never played for Bowling Green and Bourjos was already in Tampa at the time.

Cade Cannon update

Improving at the plate, flashing the leather, tearing up the base paths

Cade Cannon has been in Montgomery for 44 games now, giving us a big enough sample size to do some evaluating on one of the more intriguing prospects in the Rays' system.

At the plate Cannon is still finding his way, batting .219 with 12 walks in 173 plate appearances. His five triples and eight doubles are more a testament to his blazing speed than any sort of power, though he did hit one home run in Mobile a couple weeks back. Cannon has struck out 26 times. It's quite obvious that Cannon has been trying to be more patient at the plate but he does still frequently swing at, and hit, less than ideal pitches early in the count. If not for his speed a number of weak hits would have been outs instead of singles.

Once Cannon is on base he goes from being somewhat of a liability to a huge offensive advantage. Cannon has 32 stolen bases and has been caught stealing just three times. Batters at the plate with him on base have certainly benefited from Cannon's ability to make opposing pitchers and catchers uncomfortable.

“He's basically got the green light all the time.” Montgomery manager Brady Williams said. “There's a pretty good chance if he goes he's good.”

Cannon's speed is also a benefit in the outfield where he covers ground at an incredible rate and steals a number of hits that seem destined to drop in. He also has a cannon (pun fully intended) for a right arm and has caught a number of runners who have tested him on fly outs. He's also shown some nice versatility with 33 starts in center, four in left and three and right. He was DH in a pair of games and came off the bench in two others.

All that being said I feel like Cannon could already be of value to the Rays as a defensive sub and pinch runner but with the Biscuits firmly in a playoff spot I hope they will keep him there and let him continue to develop at the plate and to refine his game overall, perhaps turning him into an every day player in the next couple seasons.
