NDSU Offense puts up strong showing in Green and Gold game
THE BISON HELD THEIR ANNUAL SPRING GAME

April 28, 2018

FARGO, N.D. – The QB situation at NDSU has seen some big changes over the past few months. With Easton Stick leaving early for the NFL and former Minnesota Gopher Cade Cannon joining his brother Cody in Fargo there were questions about what the Bison offense might look like in 2018.

If the Green and Gold game is any indication then "really good" is the answer.

In what was more of a series of drills and drives than an actual game the Bison offense was mostly lighting it up against the defense with Cade Cannon leading his offensive group to four scores on their possessions. Cannon ran for a 42 yard score and connected with Darrius Shepherd, his brother Cody Cannon and Nate Jenson for touchdowns. Cannon then turned things over to Holden Hotchkiss, who led the offense to scores on two of his four possessions. Hotchkiss connected with Christian Watson for one score and handed it off to Adam Cofield for another.

The defense did make some solid plays against both offensive groups, including a stop on fourth and three on Lance's second possession and a strong showing in the red zone on the final possession of the "game".

"We definitely liked what we were seeing out there today." Offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham said after the event. "We've got a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball and we operated like a well oiled machine today so that's encouraging for us."

North Dakota State will open their regular season on September 1st at home against Cal Poly.

North Dakota State Picked to Win 2018 MVFC Title

North Dakota State has been tabbed as the Missouri Valley Football Conference pre-season favorite in a poll conducted by league coaches, media and sports information directors. NDSU has been picked first in the pre-season poll for seven-straight seasons.

North Dakota State has earned the league title for seven-straight years, four times sharing it with another league school. This year, NDSU was a unanimous choice, receiving all 39 first-place tallies and a total of 390 points. It marks just the second time in league history that a team received all of the first-place votes in the MVFC pre-season poll (NDSU also did it in 2013.)

South Dakota State earned the second spot in the poll, finishing with 340 total points, followed by UNI (270), Youngstown State (258), Illinois State (248) and South Dakota (206).

The league is coming off a season in which five teams represented the conference in the playoffs. The MVFC has had four or more playoff teams in four-straight seasons (earning five each in 2014, 2015 and last year). Western Illinois was one of the league's five playoff teams a year ago, and the Leathernecks -- with new head coach Jared Elliott at the helm -- are picked seventh with 163 total points. Western is followed by Southern Illinois (139), Missouri State (90) and Indiana State (41) in the voting.

A pre-season favorite has claimed the league crown 20 times (in 32 previous polls). North Dakota State was picked to win the league last season, and the Bison earned both the league title and the national title (following a 17-13 win over previously unbeaten James Madison in the NCAA Division I Football Championship game in Frisco, Texas).

Valley Football is celebrating its 34th season in 2018. In its first 33 seasons the league owns eight national crowns. MVFC teams combined for an 8-4 record in last year's playoffs, while North Dakota State and South Dakota State both reached the semifinals. That marks the third time in the past four years in which two league teams played in the semis. North Dakota State, meanwhile, represented the league in the title game, marking the 7th-straight year at least one MVFC team has reached the championship game -- an FCS record. Notably, MVFC teams have combined for a 52-23 record in the playoffs this decade. Only one other league has as many as 20 wins since 2010 (CAA Football is next best with 37.)

The 2018 season begins Thursday, Aug. 30, with four league teams in action. Nine non-conference games feature road matchups against FBS opponents. An MVFC school has recorded a win against an FBS school in each of the past eight seasons, setting a league record in 2016 with four that year. Conference play begins Thursday, Sept. 27, as Indiana State hosts UNI in the first league tilt of the season.

The MVFC will announce its pre-season all-conference teams this week (Tuesday-Offense; Wednesday-Defense). North Dakota State tops the league with 11 total selections, including a league-best eight on the first-team unit. South Dakota State, meanwhile, has the second-most selections, with eight total honorees. Youngstown State has five first-team selections, meanwhile, which is second-best to NDSU.

FARGO, N.D. -
One of the things Cade Cannon said he was excited about in joining North Dakota State was an opportunity to throw a touchdown pass to his younger brother Cody, a Bison wide receiver. It didn't take very long for that to become a reality as the Cannon brothers connected for a 68 yard score on the first offensive play of the 2018 season.

After a somewhat slow start the Bison led 7-0 after the first quarter but pulled away with a trio of touchdowns in the second quarter. Cade Cannon scored on an 11 yard run, Bruce Anderson ran in from a yard out and Cade and Cody connected again for a one yard score.

NDSU increased their lead to 45-0 in the third quarter via a Cam Pederson field goal, a Cannon TD pass to Darrius Shepherd and another Anderson TD run. After that Cal Poly got their only score of the game, cutting the lead to 45-7.

The Bison added a Lance Dunn touchdown run in the fourth before getting the second teamers some work.

NDSU racked up 52 points and nearly 600 yards of total offense while holding Cal Poly to just seven points and under 300 total yards.

Cade Cannon threw for 316 yards and three scores on 16 of 20 passing in the win while also running for another score along with 109 yards on the ground. Bruce Anderson added a pair of rushing scores and Lance Dunn also scored. Cody Cannon caught three of Cade's passes, tallying 84 yards and a pair of scores while Darrius Shepherd led the team with 132 yards on seven receptions, also scoring a touchdown.

"It was a solid win. We're number one for a reason and it was good to get out there and show that off." Head Coach Chris Klieman said following the big win.

"It was pretty special absolutely." Cade Cannon responded when asked about connection with Cody on the first play of the game for a big score. "I'll remember that one for sure. I was hoping to get that ball but I'm not sure where it ended up. We'd probably be fighting over it anyway."

North Dakota State returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 15, against North Alabama. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome.
