Panic time?
NU loss, Kill retirement and Cannon injury news spell trouble for Gophers

Usually one close road loss isn't a cause for astronomical levels of panic. However, Saturday's one point loss to Northwestern via a last second field goal and the events that have transpired since have given us plenty of reasons to sound the alarms.

First off head coach Jerry Kill announced his retirement from coaching due to health concerns on Wednesday. Kill’s health first affected his career when he suffered a seizure in 2000 while serving as the head coach at Emporia State. In 2005, he was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 44 after suffering a second seizure while on the sidelines at Southern Illinois. Doctors also discovered that he had kidney cancer and removed a portion of his kidney. He has been in remission since.

After taking over at Minnesota in 2011, Kill suffered seizures during each of his first three seasons before going seizure-free last year. His assistants, many of whom have served under him since he coached at Saginaw Valley State from 1994 to ’98, developed a “seizure protocol” in which they divvied up his responsibilities until his was able to return to coaching. Claeys served as the acting head coach for seven games in 2013 when Kill stepped away from his head coaching duties to focus on treating his epilepsy.

Kill’s health seemed to be improving last year, as he coached the full season without issue. He told SI’s Jon Wertheim in December that he attributed it to getting his medication right as well as eating and sleeping better.

Unfortunately, Kill confirmed Wednesday that his seizures returned and said he went to practice Tuesday after having two seizures. “I probably wasn’t supposed to be there,” he said. Kill said he had avoided taking some of his medication because “I couldn’t think the way I wanted to think.” His doctors warned him that continuing to coach would jeopardize his long-term health.

“I’ve given every ounce that I’ve had for 32 years to the game of football and the kids I’ve been able to coach,” a tearful Kill said at his press conference Wednesday. He added, “When I walked off the practice field, I felt like a part of me died.”

As if the loss and Coach Kill's announcement weren't big enough blows to the season Coach Claeys took to the podium earlier today to make another painful announcement regarding QB and Heisman hopeful Cade Cannon's injury that was suffered in the first half of the loss to Northwestern.

"It's an ulnar nerve injury I'm told." Claeys explained. "What it does is it causes numbness and makes it very difficult for Cade to grip the football and it effects his ability to hold and throw the ball obviously."

Cannon reportedly ran through some drills at the end of Wednesday's practice and again this morning.

"We tried some things and the medical staff tried some things and it just wasn't effective. This is something that should heal but there's a big risk of a reinjury or making the injury worse so we're all primarily concerned with doing what's best for Cade long term. We're not ruling anything out going forward but at this time we don't expect he will be able to play again this season."

Well shit.

Packers avenge earlier loss to Demons

by Tom Mixon | Oct 30, 2015

WEST FARGO — The West Fargo football team didn’t squander its second opportunity to play Bismarck this fall.

The Packers suffered a loss to the Demons in the second week of the season, but have gone only up since. West Fargo’s latest triumph was a 27-10 win against Bismarck on Friday during the quarterfinals of North Dakota Class AAA state playoffs at West Fargo High School.

“That is a really good team we played (Friday),” said West fargo senior quarterback Creighton Pfau. “We played really hard and came out on top.”

The Packers (8-2) advance to the semifinals and will host Bismarck Century on Nov. 6. The victory was West Fargo’s first against the Demons since Aug. 27, 2010. West Fargo was 0-8 against Bismarck since that victory including three losses in the playoffs.

Since its 25-18 loss against Bismarck on Sept. 4, West Fargo has won eight straight games.

The Packers grabbed control early Friday and never trailed.

Bismarck drove to the West Fargo 21-yard line on its opening series, but the drive stalled when West Fargo junior Haboniman Simon intercepted a pass thrown by Bismarck’s Jordan Mann.

The Packers then rattled off a four-play, 95-yard scoring drive that ended with Pfau finding senior tight end Alex Talley for a 60-yard touchdown reception.

“Usually on that play it, doesn’t go to Talley, but the way they were defending, it was supposed to,” said Pfau, who finished 5 of 7 passing for 109 yards and two touchdowns. “He made a great play and finished it off with a big run.”

Bismarck answered with a 29-yard field goal by senior Hunter Johnson on the first play of the second quarter. Later in the quarter, Bismarck had a field goal attempt blocked, which West Fargo used to spark a six-play, 87 yard touchdown drive before halftime.

“We needed to score when he had the opportunities to do so and we didn’t always get the job done,” Bismarck head coach Mark Gibson said. “Defensively they made some great stops so you have to give them a lot of credit. They are the biggest and most physical team in the state. I loved our effort (Friday). We gave it all we had and that’s all you can ask for.”

West Fargo head coach Jay Gibson said both scoring drives in the first half were executed well.

“On both drives it wasn’t like we were getting a short porch to work with after making a defensive stop or turnover, but you always want to make the other team pay for that a little bit,” Jay Gibson said.

The No. 3-ranked Packers’ defense kept Jaxon Ford from gaining big yardage and more importantly kept the standout running back out of the endzone. Ford finished with 75 yards for the No. 4 ranked Demons (7-3).

Jay Gibson also mentioned he was pleased with the the play of senior linebacker Jordan Faircloth, who replaced an injured Ben Dirks early in the first quarter. Dirks’ injury wasn't specified after the game, but he did not return to action.

Pfau also rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on Friday.

“Creighton contributes a tremendous amount,” Jay Gibson said. “He has a lot of experience and what he does so well is deciding whether to pitch, keep or pass. All of our plays have more than one option. You need have a special guy playing quarterback when that’s your offense and we have one.”

CODY CANNON STAYING AT HOME, SIGNS WITH NDSU

by Jon Stamose | Jan 30, 2016 9:30 am

Bismarck High School senior receiver Cody Cannon has signed with North Dakota State after speculation that he would attempt to walk on at Minnesota, where older brother Cade plays quarterback.

"There definitely was discussions about running it back, playing together again." Cody explained. "But there's a lot of uncertainty over there right now."

Cannon, a Rivals.com three star prospect, had offers from all the usual FCS programs as well as handful of lower tier FBS programs.

"It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid to play college ball and NDSU has always been my front runner. It's an honor to be recruited by them and I can't wait to get on the field and represent Bismarck."

Cannon, who was a freshman when Bismarck last won the state championship in 2012, said that the opportunity to be a key contributor on a championship team at NDSU was a big factor in his decision.

NDSU won their fifth straight FCS national championship earlier this month.

"Seeing the atmosphere at those playoff games and how it gets around here during the season makes you appreciate that part of it for sure.

Cannon was an all state selection as a junior and a senior, he led the state in receiving yards and touchdowns last season.

Minnesota Football: Chris Streveler To Transfer

By GopherNation | Apr 5, 2016, 1:54pm CDT

Image

In news that really shouldn't come as a big shocker, Chris Streveler is transferring.

From Joe Christensen at the Star Tribune...

Heading into spring practice, coach Tracy Claeys said: "The kid works hard and is a good athlete and loves the game of football. I think we can find a place for him. ... Then we will talk after the spring to see how comfortable he is."

Apparently he wasn't comfortable.

Ultimately he'll be looking to land somewhere where he'll get some playing time. Makes total sense. He was unlikely to crack the 2-deep at receiver, the position he moved to after it became apparent he was not going to get time at quarterback. Streveler is quite the athlete and one of the fastest guys on the team, but finding a home for him on the field hasn't worked out here.

Even better for Streveler is that he is on pace to graduate this Spring and will be eligible to play immediately with 2 years of eligibility. Best of luck to the young man.

Cade Cannon moved to WR
Still feeling the effects of ulnar injury, wants to contribute

By gopherguy05 | Mar 30, 2016, 3:12pm CST

Image

Over the past two seasons QB Cade Cannon has taken Gopher nation by storm. He's dazzled both as a runner and a passer, passing for 3,896 yards and tossing 40 touchdowns while also running for 2,340 yards and 37 scores in just 18 games.

Now Cannon will try to dazzle us at a new position as he attempts to make the transition to wide receiver after struggling to regain grip and feeling in his right hand following an ulnar injury that cut his 2015 season short.

"Cade's probably not going to play very much QB this season." Head coach Tracy Claeys said at a press conference to kick off spring practices. "The grip strength isn't there and there's still numbness from time to time. So we're looking at other ways to get him on the field and to get the ball in his hands."

"It's disappointing, not going to lie." Cannon said. "But ultimately I'm fortunate to still be able to play and for the coaching staff to be willing to work with me and help me make the transition. Now I'm just focused on being the best receiver, teammate and leader that I can be and working with the guys in the receiver room and also helping out the young QBs we have."

A return to QB in 2017 has not been ruled out.
