Damn! My man lost his ability to play QB. Wild his bro wouldn't want to play with his potential heisman status brother.

MINNESOTA FOOTBALL

Cade Cannon has left the program

Following news that first broke on Tuesday via the Beg Ten Network Cade Cannon has confirmed that he has left the Minnesota football program and the university. Cannon, who had been forced to move from quarterback to wide receiver after suffering an ulnar injury last season, cited a number of reasons for his decision.

"First and foremost I'm just not in love with football anymore." Cannon explained. "There's more to it, yeah, but ultimately that's the main reason."

Cannon said he had thought about leaving in the spring but was convinced by the coaching staff to stick around in hopes that the draw of gameday would keep him interested.

Cannon threw 40 touchdown passes and ran for 37 more in 2014 and 2015 for the Gophers before missing the last four games of the season after the injury that caused him to lose feeling and grip strength in his right hand. After trying unsuccessfully to rehab the injury Cannon and the Minnesota staff felt a position change was the best move.

"It's just not the same." Cannon explained when asked about the transition "It's not."

Cannon was on a number of Heisman watch lists in 2015 before his injury and there were high hopes for the redshirt junior coming into 2016, even after the news of the position change.

"His suddenness and open field skills make him exciting at any position, doesn't matter how the ball gets into his hands." One Big Ten coach said in July.

Others expected Cannon to recover and come back as a QB for the 2017 season, when many thought Cannon had the skills and size to be a first round pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

"I don't have to live my life by someone else's definition of success." Cannon shot back when a reporter asked about the potential NFL QB earnings Cannon was walking away from, citing recent big money deals for young talented quarterbacks.

Cannon was then grilled about what was next for him.

"I don't know. Just some reflection for now I guess."

Cannon leaves Minnesota with one year of eligibility left, should he decide to return to football, and QB, in 2017 he'll no doubt have plenty of suitors.

CF Cade Cannon gets spring invite

Speedster gets invite after a great showing in the Arizona Fall League
By Scott Grauer | Feb 9, 2017, 1:54pm

After leading the Arizona Fall League in stolen bases with 13 center fielder Cade Cannon has been invited to join the Rays for spring training. Cannon, who was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2013, spent the last three plus years playing quarterback and wide receiver at the University of Minnesota. Cannon left the football program in September of 2016 then joined the Scottsdale Scorpions for the 2016 Arizona Fall League which ran from early October through mid November.

Cannon played in 17 games and recorded 13 steals along with 3 doubles and a triple. He batted .194 with 6 RBIs.

Cannon's blazing speed gives him value despite his weaknesses at the plate. Add in his plus fielding ability and arm and he could have a shot at a September call up if the team feels the need to inject some speed and defensive ability to the bench.

CF Cade Cannon assigned to Bowling Green

Struggles at the plate see Cannon slated for high A ball

It's no secret that Cade Cannon struggled at the plate during spring training. In nine games Cannon had 27 plate appearances and four hits, one of which was a triple. Cannon did add three stolen bases while also showing off his plus fielding ability and his arm talent.

"This is the best place for Cade right now." Bowling Green manager Reinaldo Ruiz explained. "We can work on his plate discipline and timing and all that. It'll be good for him and it will be fun for the fans here to see him put on a show in the field and on the bases for now."

If Cannon can improve at the plate over the next few seasons he could eventually prove to be a very nice addition to the Rays' roster with his speed, base running and defensive skills making him a possible candidate for a late season call up even before he is ready for the every day roster.
