New England signs Josh Johnson, add Jaylon Smith to the defense
One of the pleasant surprises last season was the breakout performance from Josh Johnson, who flashed more than once as a deep threat in the slot. New England re-signed the 24-year old receiver on Thursday along with the free agent signing of veteran linebacker Jaylon Smith.

A practice squad call up, Johnson caught fifteen passes for 268 yards last year, scoring five times on just 254 snaps. Johnson returns to New England on a two year, $5.02 million extension that pays him more than Braxton Berrios who he will compete with for the starting slot receiver job along with Jakobi Meyers who is slated to make $10.6 million this year.

Smith also signed a two year deal worth up to $6.4 million as the former Dallas Cowboys looks to start another streak of consecutive 100-plus tackle seasons. Prior to his 2023 season with Carolina, Smith had recorded five straight seasons of 100 or more tackles, going over the 200-tackle mark in 2019 and 2020 with Dallas before signing with Carolina where he spent the past three seasons.

Similar to Johnson, Smith will have a chance at competing for a starting job in training camp next to incumbent starters Trez Marshall and Ja'Whaun Bentley. He'll have to fight off Shaq Quarterman and Laviska Henry who spent time with New England in the past two seasons as backups and are keen to try to replace the retired Dont'a Hightower.

Despite Tomlinson signing, Pats go with Ole Miss' Eric Alexander in latest ESPN Mock NFL Draft
For the third time in his mock drafts this cycle, ESPN Senior Draft Analyst Todd McShay is predicting that New England will draft an offensive lineman in the first round, this time around being Ole Miss interior offensive linemen Eric Alexander.

In his first mock, McShay had New England selecting Virginia left tackle Kahlil Lowe before New England's draft pick fell out of the top ten. In the previous mock draft, McShay had New England picking Texas guard Kenny Newby who McShay now has going in the top 20 to Tampa at number nineteen leaving New England with Alexander, the versatile prospect that's played every position on the offensive line at Ole Miss except for left tackle.

The Patriots signed Laken Tomlinson but at 32, New England still needs a long term answer to their interior offensive line woes, especially if the plan is to eventually move on from the injury prone Isaiah Wynn and kick Michael Onwenu to right tackle, leaving them with three questions marks along the interior.

The most controversial of McShay's mocks was having Jacksonville select South Carolina quarterback Zach Weathersby with the 2nd overall pick despite selecting Trevor Lawrence with the number one overall pick in 2021.

Pats add a pair of tight ends in Boyle and Bryant, get bigger up front with Hankins signing
The New England Patriots have signed tight ends Nick Boyle and Harrison Bryant along with defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins.

It's a one year, $3.8 million deal for Boyle and three years, $11.3 million for Bryant who join Jonnu Smith and Darnelle Washington on New England's roster following the departure of Hunter Henry to Pittsburgh to catch passes from MVP Matt Corral.

Boyle instantly becomes New England's best blocking tight end, a role he's served in the past ten seasons with Baltimore. He'll be in a similar run heavy offense in New England, spelling Smith and Washington along with Hopkins whose a more developmental signing.

The former FAU Owl caught 24 passes as a rookie and three touchdowns but since then, he's caught just nine passes in three seasons with the Browns as the third tight end behind David Njoku and Austin Hooper. He caught a seventeen yard pass in the 28-10 playoff loss to New England back in January.

Hankins signed a one year, $2.09 contract to likely serve as New England's backup nose tackle.

Baltimore connection continues with signing of Tucker as Patriots add five more depth players
One of the greatest kickers in NFL history is heading to Foxborough after former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker joined teammate Nick Boyle in signing a free agent contract with New England as part of a second wave of free agent signings this week.

Tucker was the first of six signing for New England in a 48-hour period along with offensive tackle Russell Okung, defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, receiver DeVante Parker as well as the signing of former Patriots Tutu Atwell and Jonathan Jones.

Tucker's deal is one year, $4.86 million with Okung, Nkemdiche, Jones, and Parker all also signing one-year deals worth $1.75 million, $1.86 million, $3.54 million and $3.75 million respectively. Atwell's extension was for two years and $5.16 million to keep him in New England where he'll be one of the team's option at both slot receiver and on the outside where he also played as a deep threat.

Last year's kicker, Quinn Nordin, missed 10 of his 33 kicks along with four extra points in what was another inconsistent season for him.

It's a reunion for Jones who spent one season with Houston before coming back to New England where he'll battle it out with third-year player Roger McCreary for the nickel role. McCreary had a good second season but took a step back from his stellar rookie season. Jones is also able to play a bit of free safety, something he's done before while at New England and adds positional versatility to a secondary that's trying to improve upon it's dead last finish last year in passing defense.

Parker joins a crowded receiver room that's now eight deep and will likely need to be cut down to six before the regular season. With just $1.2 million in guaranteed money, Parker's spot on the roster is far from secure as he'll battle it out with other outside receivers Kendrick Bourne and Parris Campbell for the starting job opposite of Charleston Rambo.

The former Louisville receiver caught 64 passes last season for 942 yards and seven touchdowns which would have made him New England's most productive receiver.

Texas' Kenny Newby drops to New England in new mock draft
The more things change, the more they stay the same. ESPN Senior Draft Analyst Todd McShay's final mock draft of the cycle is out and once again, New England is selecting guard Kenny Newby out of Texas with the 27th overall pick.

McShay had mocked Newby to New England in his third mock but bumped Newby up to Tampa at No. 19 before sliding him back down to 27 despite a solid showing at his pro day where he repped 37 on the bench press, besting his combine number of 35 which was good for third among interior offensive linemen.

A powerful athlete at six-foot-four and 341 pounds, Newby is more of a "pure guard" than previously mocked Eric Alexander out of Ole Miss whose a bit more versatile but not as dominant of a road grader.

McShay has one guard going before Newby in Virginia's Zach Beal (No. 12) and has Tampa drafting defensive end Shelton Ballard, Newby's teammate at Texas, instead.

Tua Mania hits Washington at last attempt to crack it in the league
Daniel Snyder is back to his spending ways, signing Tua Tagovailoa to be his quarterback during free agency along with A.J. Dillon and Terrell Burgess on offense and defense respectively as the Commanders try to bolster their odds to win the very competitive NFC East.

Tua will likely replace 31-year old Taylor Heinicke who led Washington to a wild card playoff exit at the hands of rookie Bryce Young and the Minnesota Vikings. Heinicke had arguably his best season as a pro, throwing for 4827 yards and 31 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions while having a 104.1 passer rating. Patriots make aggressive trade to select Michigan's Whitfield at No. 15
The New England Patriots traded their 27th overall pick along with the 59th and 91st to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for their 15th and 111th overall draft pick for the right to select Michigan linebacker Gio Whitfield at No. 15.

Whitfield is the second linebacker off the board after Isaiah Golston went in the top eight to Florida State. Listed at six-foot-four and 248 pounds, the former Wolverine prospect showed off his elite speed at the Combine and at his pro day, running a 4.48 in Indianapolis and improving upon that time in Ann Arbor with a 4.42, which was the fastest among all linebackers.

A three-year starter at Michigan, Whitfield is a modern linebacker with the ability to do a bit of everything akin to Micah Parsons as he recorded 23 sacks during his time at Michigan.

The drafting of Whitfield next to Trez Marshall gives New England one of the most athletic linebacker combos in the league.

NFL Draft prospects the Patriots could target on Day 2
Despite many mocking New England to select one of the top interior offensive linemen at No. 27, the new regime of the Patriots made their first bold move, moving inside the top fifteen to select the consensus second best linebacker in the draft in Gio Whitfield.

New England surrendered a second and a third round pick in order to make that move making their Day 2 drafting even more important. With picks at 50 and 72, there are still some intriguing options on the board for New England.

Texas IOL Kenny Newby
Once projected to be New England's first round, the question is if Newby will survive to No. 50 after slipping out of the first round.

There are some concerns about his weight at 341 pounds but New England is used to handling situations like these with Michael Onwenu and Trent Brown on their roster, two guys that have to manage their weight.

It's hard to imagine that Newby, once a consensus first round pick, makes it to pick No. 50 but if he does, New England will be in prime position to snatch him up.

Oregon EDGE Parker Ballard
Some more wishful thinking with Ballard whose brother went in the first round. Even with the Von Miller signing, New England needs a long term answer at edge that it hasn't been able to find in a while and Ballard would be that.

It's more likely that Ballard will be there at 50 than Newby but even he is a long shot.

Ole Miss G Eric Alexander
After some brief first round buzz, it seems the industry has cooled off on Alexander view him more as a second or third round pick, the perfect situation for New England to get perhaps the steal of the draft.

He'll be an option at both No. 50 and No. 72 as he could potentially last until the second round but if a lot of the first round "droppers" are off the board by 50, there might not be a better talent on the board than Alexander who is one of the safer picks of the draft at his position.

Michigan T Quincy Mayer
More of a third round option, Mayer is the ideal swing tackle for New England as he can play both left tackle and right tackle with injury prone players at both positions for New England.

There are some concerns regarding how Mayer's body will hold up in the NFL as he's not the biggest guy at six-foot-five and 311 pounds with a lean body type. He won't be asked to play right away in New England at tackle and could get the opportunity to develop into his body.

USC IOL Gary Potts
Similar to Mayer, there are some body type concerns with Potts at just six-foot-one and 291 pounds.

He can probably get away with it at center but his finesse playing style limits his positional versatility which dings him up a little bit in the eyes of draft evaluators, especially at New England where positional versatility is extremely valued.

Northern Illinois EDGE Cole Barrow
Barrow flashed against Michigan and then proceeded to have a solid but nothing special season at Northern Illinois against weaker competition.

His poor showing at the combine didn't help his stock either as he ran a 4.78 in the forty and finished in the bottom half of all edge players in terms of bench press, vertical jump, broad jump and 20-yard shuttte.

It's tough to see New England picking him at fifty but if he's there at No. 72, he might be worth a flyer on as New England tries to fix their edge rusher issues.

Patriots draft Ole Miss OL Eric Alexander in the second round
With the 50th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected Ole Miss offensive lineman Eric Alexander.

Alexander started his career at Ole Miss on the defensive side of the ball as a defensive tackle before making the switch to guard where he started six games as a sophomore. Alexander moved to right tackle for his junior season before returning inside for his senior season where injuries on the team also had him start three games at center.

One of the more athletic and agile offensive linemen of his class, Alexander is a versatile chest piece for New England's coaching staff and will likely compete right away at center along with Matt Jones and Robert Hainsey. His more natural and long term position though is guard where he'll likely eventually move to.

Patrios trade back four times in third round to net future third round pick, additional late draft picks
In a somewhat rate interdivisional trade, the Miami Dolphins traded up in the third round, sending the 78th overall selection and 142nd to New England for the 70th overall pick to select Terrence Thompson.

New England traded back once more, going back one spot in a trade with the Titans that netted them an additional sixth round pick only to trade that selection to Cleveland to move down to the 85th overall pick and pick up an additional fifth round pick. New England then completed their final trade of the round, sending the 85th overall pick to Indianapolis for a 2025 third and seventh round pick.
