Close but no cigar, New England is at the door of being an elite team
New England caught many teams by surprise last season when they made it to the post-season and beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card round. When Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns sent them packing this time around in the very same round, it was considered a slight upset.

New England now has expectations something that only befalls the lucky few in the NFL that are considered good. They also have one of football's most prized possessions, a talented quarterback on a rookie contract that is set to make just $4.96 million next season.

Mac Jones' pay day is soon to come, especially after he finished second this season in passing yards behind only Tom Brady but for now, New England is getting him for cheap and must seize on the opportunity to build around him.

The first step is going to be deciding where there is fat to trim and where they can improve. Damien Harris rushed for over 1,500 yards this season but towards the end of the season, Rhamondre Stevenson proved to be a capable replacement. Harris is up for free agency this season, do they shell out to keep him or choose to go with the younger, cheaper option in Stevenson?

There are also veterans on offense such as RB James White ($3.67m cap hit in 2023), C David Andrews ($5.87m) and Kendrick Bourne ($7.07m) that New England must decide on. Seattle's D.K. Metcalf could potentially be available in free agency if the Seahawks don't franchise tag him soon as well as younger guys like Darius Slayton and Tre'quan Smith.

Defensively, the tough decision was made for New England as long time safety Devin McCourty announced his retirement. New England is now in a better position to potentially re-sign nickel corner Jonathan Jones. While Jones would have been considered a niche player a decade ago, he's now a premium and played exceptionally well in 2022 as the team's best option in the slot on defense.

No matter what New England does this offseason, 2025 must be in the back of their mind as that's when Mac will be up for an extension and a big one. They must manage to both take advantage of his low cap hit right now while also leaving themselves space in 2025 to likely give Jones a mega extension.

Mayfield's free agency market could set the tone for Jones' extension
Cleveland passed on extending Baker Mayfield or applying the franchise tag and instead are allowing the 28-year old quarterback to test the open market.

Mayfield, considered by most an average quarterback, could set the floor for that Mac Jones' next deal with New England could look like. Jones is currently 24 and has two years left on his deal and by most accounts is considered already a better quarterback than Mayfield.

While New England isn't going to be interested in Mayfield, they could be in other top free agents such as Jaire Alexander, D.K. Metcalf and Quinnen Williams.

New England has never spent big money on a free agent wide receiver but have spent before on the defensive line and at corner, most recently Stephon Gilmore. Could they decide to let Jonathan Jones, whose already been linked to the Texans and the Jets, walk and aim their targets at Alexander? It'll take a lot of guaranteed money, close to $60 million, but would give New England arguably the best corner tandem in the league along with their former first round pick Roger McReary who had a stellar rookie season.

Patriots open free agency period with subtractions
The New England Patriots have released safety Jalen Mills and interior defensive linemen Lawrence Guy. Mills' release cleared up $5.37 million while New England saved $2.75 million by cutting Guy as they head into free agency.

With a loaded free agency class, Guy's release isn't a surprise. Other veterans such as J.J. Watt, Fletcher Cox and Sheldon Richardson are available as are young talents in Quinnen Williams and Sebastian Joseph-Day as well as guys like Matthew Ioannidis and Sheldon Rankins.

It's not as strong of a bunch at safety but at this point in his career, both Adrian Phillips and Kyle Dugger are better options there in space than Mills. The team opted to deploy Phillips almost exclusively at linebacker last season but could be forced to put him or Dugger back as a deep third safety to replace McCourty.

A lot of the top free agents at safety such as Jordan Poyer and Jimmie Ward are more in line with Dugger and Phillips from a strong suit standpoint than McCourty who was a former corner and gave the team flexibility by being able to cover a lot of space.

2015 all over again as Pats shock free agency world with mega deal for Alexander
New England stole the show in 2015 when it signed Buffalo Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore to a five-year, $65 million extension despite already having a Pro Bowl caliber corner in Malcolm Butler.

They did it again, adding Green Bay Packer star cornerback Jaire Alexander to a roster that already includes J.C. Jackson and Roger McCreary.

Alexander's deal is rumored to be $116 million over five years with $61.3 million of it guaranteed. The deal, which pays him $20.7 million in 2023, makes him the second highest paid cornerback in football behind only Jalen Ramsey ($25.3 million). Between Alexander and Jackson, New England is paying its top two corners close to $35 million.

New England is also rumored to have extended an offer to Jonathan Jones and do want to bring him back as well. Jones had played some safety earlier in his career in sub packages and with Devin McCourty's retirement, Jones could potentially move back there full time with Jackson and Alexander on the outside and McCreary in the slot on defense.
