NFL Draft prospects the Patriots could target on Day 2
With two of the four safeties on the roster over the age of thirty, New England selected Alabama's Malachi Moore with their first round pick.

Many thought Moore would be a Day 2 draft pick but New England, in a similar fashion when it came to selecting Kyle Dugger in the second round, valued him more than most and pulled the trigger on Moore.

The second day of the draft is upon us and New England will be selecting twice with the 59th pick and the 91st in the second and third round respectively. The Patriots filled a lot of needs during free agency as well as re-signing a lot of their top players but there are still spots that need either improvement, depth or a potential succession plan for their more veteran players.

Georgia DT Jaylen Carter
Carter was more of a fit prior to free agency when New England not only brought back Davon Godchaux but signed possibly the best interior defensive lineman on the market in Quinnen Williams to form a pretty strong threesome on the inside of Williams, Godchaux and Christian Barmore.

Jordan Davis got all the hype in 2021 but Carter was just as productive in 2022 and showed out in the combine with a 4.81 forty at six-foot-three and 318 pounds. If he's there at 59, he might be too good of a value pick to pass up on even if it's not a position of need for New England.

Georgia LB Trez Marshall
Carter's teammate Marshall might just be what the doctor ordered in terms of filling out team needs as New England needs to get younger and more athletic at linebacker.

Dont'a Hightower was uber productive in 2022 but he showed even more signs of slowing down as an off ball linebacker and was a liability in coverage. It might be time to convert Hightower into a full-time line of scrimmage player and while Ja'Whaun Bentley is a solid run defender, he hasn't been asked to be a sub-package linebacker and with good reason as that's not his game.

Marshall is probably the most athletic linebacker in the draft and could be there at 59.

N.C. State LB Drake Thomas
For all the reasons mentioned above, Thomas is another possibility in day two at in both the second and the third round. He doesn't have the physical tools that Marshall has but they're of similar build and similar playing style.

Thomas has actually been better in coverage than Marshall at the college level although Marshall's athleticism allows for more room for growth in that area. Thomas might be a slight reach in the second round but if he's there in the third, that'd be a steal for New England.

Miami EDGE Chantz Williams
Williams had some first-round pick buzz after starting the college football season with six sacks in three games but his production tapered off as the season began but he still led the ACC in pressures.

A bit of an undisciplined pass rusher, Williams still has room to grow as a player and would join an already crowded room of edge defenders that includes Matthew Judon, Josh Uche, DeAngelo Malone and Ronnie Perkins.

However, New England did lose Chase Winovich during free agency and could be looking to add another elite pass rusher opposite of Judon.

USC WR Bru McCoy
The one thing New England is missing at receiver is a big bodied receiver which is what N'Keal Harry was supposed to be but never materialized.

McCoy is listed at six-foot-four and 225 pounds, something he used to his advantage at the college level this past season. The production wasn't always there at USC due to injuries and suspensions which included a domestic assault allegation which were later dropped.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft said publicly in 2017 that the team would not consider drafting players with domestic assault in their history but as far on the field, McCoy would fit a need for New England.

Miami DB Tyrique Stevenson
Stevenson is the kind of versatile defensive back that Bill Belichick loves and there's no such things as too many secondary players in today's NFL.

Is Stevenson a safety or a corner? That's the question for scouts, especially with his forty time in the 4.5 range which would put him more as a safety but Stevenson has played corner exclusively since transferring to Miami from Georgia and has played well there.

A physical player, Stevenson could potentially split the difference between the two positions at the next level and end up as a big nickel in the NFL. The second round is a bit too rich for Stevenson but he could be a value selection in the third round.

Patriots keep building defense up with pick of Georgia LB Marshall in 2nd round
The New England Patriots have selected linebacker Trez Marshall out of the University of Georgia with the 59th pick of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Marshall bid his time behind former teammate and future first round pick Nakobe Dean during his first three seasons at Georgia before emerging as a full-time starter in 2022. Marshall earned second team All-SEC honors during his senior season where he was second on the Bulldogs with 74 tackles and ten tackles for loss.

While Marshall is known for his athleticism which was on display at the combine with a sub 4.4 forty, Marshall's college tapes show him flying to the ball and finishing with authority at the point of contact so he's far from a finesse player at the linebacker position. A high school quarterback and running back, Marshall has shown good ball skills with three interceptions this past season.

He does sometimes have issues getting off blocks, an area he'll need to improve to become a three-down linebacker but his athleticism should allow him to get on the field as a rookie in passing situations.

New England adds versatile Ohio State OL Matt Jones in third round
The New England Patriots have selected Ohio State University offensive linemen Matt Jones with the 91st pick of the 2023 NFL Draft.

A fifth-year senior, Jones started all fourteen games at center for Ohio State this past season after playing mostly as a backup guard during his first three seasons at Ohio State.

Jones worked out as a center at the combine and finished in the top ten for most of the athletic drills with the fifth fastest 40-time and the top six in the 3-cone drill and the 20-yard shuttle.

A good athlete, Jones likely doesn't have the sheer strength to be an NFL guard and will likely remain a center at the next level but both guard spots remain a possibility for Jones. New England was rumored to have pursued free agent center Rodney Hudson who didn't pick the Patriots so could Jones potentially challenge David Andrews for his starting spot?

Andrews, a team captain, struggled to stay on the field in 2022.

Potential Patriots targets for draft's day three
The Patriots came out of the draft's second day adding linebacker Trez Marshall and center Matt Jones to go with Thursday's first-round pick safety Malachi Moore. New England filled some significant needs in their first two days of the draft, and with three more picks slated for Saturday, they aren't done quite yet.

With some projected day two players still on the board, the Patriots can look to lock up some depth options as the draft winds down without having to get into a bidding war for anyone's services.

USC WR Bru McCoy
McCoy was a potential target in day two and he's still on the board. Off the field concerns has the very talented receiver still available for the picking in the fourth round and while its unlikely he's still there by the time New England picks, if he is, he might be worth taking a chance on.

Virginia LB Nik Jackson
Some had Jackson as a potential first round pick but a poor combine has hurt his stock as he's too small to be an edge defender (6'1", 235 pounds) and too slow (4.75 40-yd dash) to be an off the ball linebacker at the next level.

New England doesn't mind niche players and Jackson could be that as the next level as a traditional 4-3 outside linebacker.

Georgia TE Darnell Washington
Washington makes other SEC athletes look small and that's an impressive feat.

An all-word recruit coming out of high school, Washington has mostly been used as a blocking tight end for the Bulldogs but the physical tools are there for him to be a potential starting caliber tight end in the NFL and he'll have plenty of time to grow behind Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry.

Notre Dame HB Chris Tyree
New England re-signed Damien Harris to bring back one of the league's best running back tandems but they could always add some new and young talent to that position with James White likely nearing the end of his career and Rhamondre Stevenson being due for an extension in the near future.

Tyree is a solid and productive running back but his lack of versatility both as a receiver and on special teams could limit his fit with New England as they would want that added bonus from whoever ends up being their fourth running back on the roster.

Ohio State S Marcus Hooker
Similar to Jackson, a poor combine hurt Hooker who had a slow forty time combined with mixed reviews of his final season at Ohio State.

Hooker's played a lot big time football and his experience could be a plus in the eyes of a coaching staff in New England that values that attribute.

Alabama DT Byron Young
New England loses Alabama players and especially Alabama defenders and with two on their defensive line already, why not add a third in Young?

He has a similar build as Quinnen Williams although not nearly the player. Davon Godchaux will likely be the team's starting nose tackle but they could use another nose tackle which is what Young played for the Tide.

UL Lafayette HB Chris Smith
Smith turned heads at the combine with his 4.39 forty which he improved on at his pro day, running the forty in 4.34 with both times being the best this offseason for all draft eligible running backs.

While Notre Dame's Tyree is a better running back, Smith might be more of a fit for New England as he's both a physical runner while also having some of the traits to potentially be a returner or third down back.

Alabama S Brian Branch
First-round pick Malachi Moore's running mate in the secondary was Branch who physically looks like Moore but Branch lacks the athleticism and flat out special talent that Moore possessed which is why he went in the first round.

Branch is a solid player in his own right and would add some much needed youth to the safety position.
