Wilson, Jones duel it out in Seahawks 35-21 win over Patriots
The Seattle Seahawks drafted Brian Otting during this spring's NFL draft in an effort to plan for a future without Russell Wilson.

Wilson made it clear on Friday that he's not ready for that to be the case just yet, throwing for 306 yards and three touchdowns in three quarters of football to beat the New England Patriots 35-21.

Both Wilson and New England's Mac Jones threw for three touchdowns apiece as Jones completed 61 percent of his passes for 271 yards. In the final preseason game, neither team ran the ball much outside of a couple of long runs from Chris Carson who averaged 9.5 yards per carry, including a 59-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

It was a game of long touchdowns with Kendrick Bourne reeling in a 29-yard touchdown in the 2nd quarter right before Gerald Everett broke look for a 53-yard touchdown on a coverage mix-up. Carson then added an 80-yard touchdown catch and run to open up the second half for Seattle only for New England to respond with a 56-yard touchdown pass to Josh Johnson.

Stock Up
1. Quinnen Williams and Christian Barmore continue to impress up front despite Carson's big day. The bigger problem was on the edge and run fits at the second level but Big Q and Barmore did their part with Barmore recording two tackles for loss and a sack while Williams had a sack himself, a tackle for loss and two quarterback pressures.

2. Charleston Rambo did the damn thing after being quiet for most of the preseason, catching five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown. It was a big day for him and a sure confidence builder heading into the regular season.

It was also a good day for Kendrick Bourne who only caught one pass but it was an impressive one on a deep post that he reeled in for a touchdown. It was the same kind of route that Jones had tried to hit DeVante Parker on a few times so the fact that Bourne was able to catch it as soon as he replaced Parker bodes well for his chances of making the roster.

3. With Darnell Washington suffering an injury in the second half, it was a busy day for Jonnu Smith in his preseason debut as he caught six passes for 74 yards. Harrison Bryant also had a good performance with four receptions for 42 yards although he did have a pretty bad drop.

The tight end room, even if Washington misses a few games, is in good hands.

4. Ronnie Perkins is earning himself some first team snaps with his recent string of performances as it's becoming tough to ignore.

He recorded four tackles including two tackles for loss and a sack. With Von Miller having the game off, he was far and away New England's best edge defender as Matthew Judon continued to struggle to make his impact felt on the game.

5. There's fast and then there's Josh Johnson fast. While New England has plenty of fast guys on the roster in Braxton Berrios, Parris Campbell, Miles Young, Tutu Atwell and Rambo, Johnson is a step faster than all of them and it showed on that 56-yard touchdown where he just left the defender behind him.

It's that kind of game breaking ability that might make him worth a spot on the final 53.

Stock Down
1. It was another bad week of injuries with Washington likely missing time along with offensive linemen Laken Tomlinson and Russell Okung potentially being out for the opener.

Michael Onwenu left the game after the very first play with a shoulder injury but it seemed to be precautionary as he wasn't in a sling after the game.

2. After building some momentum all camp, Gio Whitfield took a step back in terms of his viability as a three-down player as he was picked and abused by Russell Wilson when in coverage.

One of the big plays wasn't his fault as there seemed to be a communication mishap that led to it but even when he's out in space and in position to potentially cover his man, he seems to make the wrong step or be too aggressive, leading to a wide open tight end or running back.

3. All of the receivers struggled with catching the ball but DeVante Parker was the worse with five drops that led to him being essentially benched in favor of Kendrick Bourne in the second quarter.

Parker had been stacking up good days in camp with good games in the preseason but that was a really worrisome performance from the veteran in the most important preseason game of them all.

Tutu Atwell and Josh Johnson also struggled with drops.

4. The entire secondary had a tough day in coverage with J.C. Jackson getting picked on at times, Shaun Wade's struggles continuing, even Roger McCreary had a tough day after having a really solid preseason.

Ashtyn Davis got his first extended run at safety with the first team and struggled with his run fits as well as being out of position for Chris Carson's 80-yard catch and run as Shaq Quarterman was stuck out in space by himself as Carson went up the seams for a touchdown in an apparent cover 3 look with Davis as the deep safety.

Patriots finalize 53-man roster, release depth chart
The New England Patriots have trimmed their roster to 53 men and have released the 2024 depth chart for the team's season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Among the cuts were two veteran players in Matthew Judon and Ja'Whaun Bentley who have served major roles in New England's defense the past few seasons. Judon was a big free agent signing for New England back in 2021 but after back-to-back 10+ sacks season during his first two years, Judon recorded just one sack last year.

Unlike Judon, Bentley was productive last season but with the drafting of two linebackers in the past two drafts within the first two rounds, it's clear that New England is undergoing a youth movement at linebacker following the release of Kyle Van Noy last season and Dont'a Hightower's retirement this past offseason.

The team also confirmed that tight end Darnell Washington and offensive linemen Laken Tomlinson and Russell Okung are out for the opener against Jacksonville.

New England additionally signed running back Kenneth Walker III to their practice squad along with safety Jalen Catalon and defensive end Quincey Thompkins. Thompkins, a rookie, was released by Arizona after being drafted in the second round just a few months ago.

Catalon was a former second round pick for the Chargers that started last season for Los Angeles and recorded 43 tackles and an interception.

A third round pick in 2022, Walker rushed for nine touchdowns in two seasons for the Washington Commanders but saw his role decrease in the preseason with just one carry in three games due to the addition of A.J. Dillon on the roster as the team's short yardage back. He was fourth on the depth chart behind Antonio Gibson, Chase Edmonds and Dillon. All three practice squad pickups have a good chance at eventually making it onto New England's 53-man roster.

New England Patriots promote three practice squad players ahead of Jacksonville game
The New England Patriots have promoted recently signed practice squad members running back Kenneth Walker III, defensive lineman Quincey Thompkins and safety Jalen Catalon to their active roster for the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

To clear up the roster space, they've moved offensive lineman Nick Ford, defensive linemen Kalen Young and safety Leon O'Neal Jr. to the practice squad.

The move was likely done in an effort to keep other teams from poaching Walker, Thompkins and Catalon who were all day two draft picks for their respective teams before getting released as part of the 53-man roster cuts. The Miami Dolphins were rumored to be interested in trading for Catalon prior to his release from the Los Angeles Chargers.

With such a tight turnaround, it's unlikely that either of them see the field this Sunday but the move to the active roster is a clear indication that Mike Tomlin and Company have a plan in place for them.

Yeah, we were competitive when the first team was out there although its slightly concerning since none of those teams were really competitors either

It's a contract year for him and Mac so they better ball out.

It was time to get younger, they're only taking snaps away from the younger guys at this point.

Franchise Gameplay Restrictions
- No switching players on offense or defense after the snap with exception being on offense during designed jump ball situations (ie goal-line fade).
- No unusual moving of defensive players pre-snap (ie moving a player with deep third responsibility close to the LOS)
- No hot routes allowed on offense or defense. Defense allowed to shift to adjust to offense formation or game situation.
- Must mix up the snap cadence on offense in order to simulate real-game scenarios and be susceptible to false start penalties.
- Cannot use directional aim (left stick) when kicking. Must use kicking meter as method to direct the kick.
- No audibling on the road.
- Audibling is limited to quick audibles (ie: run play, quick pass, man coverage) only under the following circumstances:
- Defense is overloaded to one side. QB is allowed to flip the run play.
- Defense is playing press coverage on a WR screen/bubble play. QB is allowed to audible to a run.
- Defense is showing blitz on a run headed towards the player(s) showing blitz. QB is allowed to flip the run play.
- Offense is lining up in an empty set on a play where a blitz is called. Defense is allowed to audible out of the blitz.
- Offense is lining up in the wildcat formation. Defense is allowed to audible to a blitz.
- Offense has overloaded one side of the football. Defense is allowed to audible to man coverage in order to match leverage.
- Allowed on offense to utilize the pre-snap coach snap (reveals play being run) once per play at home and cannot use it on the road.
- Play selection is limited to the first page of recommended plays on offense and defense.
- Can overrule AI fourth down decision once per half. In those situations, offense must run a play from the recommended plays section.

Franchise Roster Management Restrictions

New England rushes for 297 yards but defensive struggles cost them win against Jacksonville
It was a clash of two offensive styles as New England attempted to ram it down the Jacksonville Jaguars' defense's throat while Trevor Lawrence, fueled with the drafting of his intended replacement, kept slicing up New England's secondary.

Finesse won, this time around.

Lawrence was nearly flawless in his final drive, completing seven straight passes for 78 yards before connecting with Tyler Higbee on the game winning touchdown with 14 seconds left in the game to beat the Patriots 34-31.

On third and one from the 10-yard line with no timeouts on Jacksonville's side, new Patriots head coach Mike Tomlin motioned towards the official as if he was going to call a timeout but the timeout never came, leaving New England in a pressure look that saw Higbee be left in one on coverage with safety Jordan Poyer.

Poyer is one of the many additions over the past three seasons that has made New England one of the most expensive secondary in the league, only to finish dead last a season ago in pass defense. They'll likely be last entering next week as well after Lawrence threw for 435 yards and two touchdowns with both touchdowns coming in end of half situations.
